Destiny (荡漾, 2025) — Review
I really wanted to like Destiny.
Mostly because I was genuinely happy to see Wang Xingwei finally playing the actual male lead for once. 😂
I am so used to seeing this man as:
- the second male lead
- somebody's secretary
- somebody's assistant
- an employee working for an annoying villain
- or some guy standing beside the person who is actually getting the romance
So when I realized he was finally THE male lead?
GOOD.
Give that man his chance.
Unfortunately, one actor cannot carry an entire drama by himself.
And he was basically trying.
Wang Xingwei Basically Carried It 😂
He was easily the strongest part of the episodes I watched.
I liked him.
I wanted to keep watching HIM.
And I was glad he finally had a proper male-lead role instead of hovering around somebody else's storyline.
The problem was everything around him.
At some point I realized I was continuing mostly because I liked the male lead, and that is not enough to keep me watching an entire drama.
The Chemistry Was Not Chemistrying
This romance just was not doing much for me.
The leads technically had romantic material.
I knew what the drama wanted me to feel.
I simply was not feeling it.
Their chemistry felt weak to me, and I never became invested enough in the relationship to care what happened next.
For a romance drama, that is a major problem.
If I am several episodes into a short drama and I am still waiting for the romance to make me care, something has gone wrong.
The Female Lead Annoyed Me 😭
The female lead was probably the character who irritated me the most.
And once a main character starts annoying me while I am already bored with the plot, my attention span begins packing its bags.
I did not become emotionally attached to her.
I was not invested enough in her journey.
And because I was not sold on her OR the romance, there was very little left keeping me there besides Wang Xingwei.
Does She Own Another Skirt? 👀😂
I also need somebody to explain that denim skirt.
Because I swear every time I looked at this woman, the denim skirt had returned.
At some point it stopped being wardrobe and became a supporting character. 😂
Maybe she changed clothes more than it felt like she did.
But once I noticed that skirt, I could not STOP noticing it.
I started wondering whether the costume department had simply said:
“Perfect. We found the skirt. Our work here is done.”
And Then I Got Bored
This is ultimately why I dropped it.
I was bored.
The plot felt draggy to me even though this is a mini-drama.
The romance was not pulling me in.
The female lead annoyed me.
The chemistry was weak.
And continuing started to feel like homework.
That is usually my sign to leave.
Could the drama improve later?
Sure.
But I was no longer interested enough to find out.
Important: I Did NOT Finish It
Because I dropped Destiny early, I am NOT rating:
- the final ending
- later relationship developments
- later breakup status
- later chemistry
- later plot twists
I can only review what I actually watched.
During the portion I watched, I did not encounter a significant prolonged romantic breakup.
That does NOT mean I am declaring the entire drama “No Breakup.”
I did not watch enough to establish that.

Romantic Material Begins
There are already romantic elements during Reese's watched portion, but she felt the chemistry between the leads was very weak.
The relationship existed more convincingly on paper than it did onscreen for her.

Through Episode 6
No Major Breakup Observed
Reese had not encountered a significant prolonged romantic breakup by the time she stopped.
However, she had not watched enough of the drama to establish the full relationship history.
-
Around Episode 6
Reese Drops the Drama
Reese stopped because she was bored, found the female lead annoying, and was not invested in the romance.
The male lead was the main reason she had continued as long as she did.
Breakup / Separation Status Through Drop Point
- Major breakup observed: No
- Official long-term couple status: Not established in Reese's watched notes

Final Thoughts
I wanted this to work mostly because I was excited to see Wang Xingwei finally get a real male-lead opportunity.
And honestly?
He deserved the opportunity.
But he cannot carry an entire drama alone.
The female lead annoyed me.
The chemistry was barely doing anything for me.
The story bored me.
The denim skirt became permanently embedded in my memory.
And by around Episode 6, I was done.
Wang Xingwei, I am still happy you finally got the male-lead role.
I just wish it had been in something I wanted to finish. 😂
