A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

Research Transparency

I remembered my overall feelings about this drama better than every plot detail, so parts of this review were reconstructed with factual research after I finished watching.

My rating, reactions, opinions, likes and dislikes, and feelings about the characters and romance are my own. Research was used to check episode numbers, plot events, relationship milestones, Xie Yong’er’s pregnancy storyline, the separation, the ending, and official streaming information.

My Quick Take

I honestly forgot a lot of what happened in How Dare You!? after I finished it, but one thing I definitely remembered was how much I loved Yu Wanyin and Xiahou Dan together.

Their dynamic is easily my favorite part of the drama.

They are funny, ridiculous, intelligent, and surprisingly healthy as a couple. Instead of spending half the drama doubting each other over stupid misunderstandings, they actually become partners. They strategize together, protect each other, joke around, and eventually build the kind of relationship where you can actually believe these two people enjoy being around each other.

That alone earns a lot of points from me.

The political parts did drag at times, and I definitely loved the couple more than I loved the actual plot. I also wanted more kissing, more affection, more quiet couple moments, and more romantic payoff at the end.

But overall? This was still a really good drama.

And visually? GORGEOUS.

I loved the costumes, the styling, the sets, the colors, the entire visual presentation. This was one of those dramas where even when the plot was getting a little too political for me, at least I still had something beautiful to look at. 😂

The Setup

Yu Wanyin is actually modern office worker Wang Cuihua, who suddenly finds herself inside a novel as a character who is very much not supposed to have a good ending.

Naturally, survival becomes priority number one.

Then she discovers that the supposedly terrifying Emperor Xiahou Dan is also a modern person trapped inside the story.

And this is where the drama becomes fun.

Instead of having just one transmigrator running around thinking they know everything, we get two modern people looking at each other like, basically, “WAIT. YOU TOO?!”

From there, they form an alliance and start trying to outsmart the original plot, survive palace politics, deal with the people who are supposed to destroy them, and somehow keep an entire country from falling apart.

It sounds serious.

And sometimes it is.

But these two are also complete idiots together. 😂

Yu Wanyin + Xiahou Dan: The Best Part

This relationship worked for me because it actually felt like a partnership.

Yu Wanyin is smart, capable, practical, and not easily pushed around. She can match Xiahou Dan intellectually, but she can also match his ridiculous sense of humor.

Xiahou Dan is powerful and protective without treating her like she has no brain of her own.

That is important.

He respects what she can do. She contributes to their plans. They make decisions together. She saves him too.

I love a protective male lead, obviously, but I like him even more when protecting the female lead does not mean reducing her to a helpless decoration.

These two felt like equals.

Their banter was also one of the best parts of the entire drama. Wang Churan and Cheng Lei played off each other so naturally that even simple conversations could be funny.

And once their feelings became serious, their relationship was refreshingly stable.

There are conflicts around them. There are political schemes. There are secrets, danger, illness, rebellion, and people constantly trying to kill somebody because apparently nobody in a historical C-drama knows how to relax.

But the romance itself never turns into one of those exhausting hot-cold relationships.

Thank goodness.

Xiahou Dan — Cheng Lei, You Were Doing a Lot Here 😂

I loved Xiahou Dan.

He is hilarious, protective, devoted, intelligent, damaged, dangerous when necessary, and surprisingly sweet with Wanyin.

And yes, Cheng Lei being Cheng Lei certainly helped. 😂

Xiahou Dan initially looks like the typical ruthless emperor character, but his history makes him much more sympathetic. He has already spent years surviving inside this world before Wanyin appears, and there is a lot more underneath his behavior than simply “evil emperor.”

Once you understand what he has survived, his attachment to Wanyin makes even more sense.

She is not just the woman he falls in love with.

She is someone who understands where he actually came from.

She understands the strange loneliness of being a modern person trapped inside a fictional world where everyone else accepts things that seem completely insane to them.

That shared connection gives their romance more weight.

And I really loved that even as the relationship becomes serious, Xiahou Dan still treats her like a partner instead of suddenly turning into one of those male leads who decides he knows everything and stops communicating.

He is also very attractive.

This is relevant information. 😂

Yu Wanyin — Finally, A Female Lead Who Can Keep Up

I really liked Yu Wanyin too.

She is clever without becoming unrealistically perfect. She adapts, thinks quickly, understands the danger she is in, and is willing to play the political game when she has to.

Most importantly, she is not weak.

She does not spend the entire drama getting bullied while waiting for Xiahou Dan to appear and save her.

She can defend herself with strategy, and she can work beside him instead of behind him.

Wang Churan also looked absolutely beautiful in this drama. Her styling was excellent, and the costumes suited her perfectly.

Honestly, everybody looked good.

This drama understood the assignment visually.

They Are Both Ridiculous 😂

The comedy was a huge part of why I enjoyed this drama as much as I did.

The modern-person jokes are especially funny because Wanyin and Xiahou Dan can say or do things that make perfect sense to each other while everyone around them is completely confused.

Their recognition of another person from the modern world through the world's most painfully basic English-classroom exchange is still ridiculous. 😂

I also liked that the comedy did not disappear completely once the plot became more serious.

There are some genuinely heavy storylines in How Dare You!?, so the lighter moments between the leads keep the drama from becoming completely weighed down by palace politics.

Without the humor, I honestly think I would have liked this drama less.

Xie Yong’er — I Actually Felt Bad for Her

Xie Yong’er frustrated me sometimes, but I also felt genuinely sorry for her.

At first, she can easily look like the typical second female lead standing in the main couple’s way.

But her storyline becomes much more tragic than that.

Her relationship with Prince Duan leads to a pregnancy that puts her in an extremely dangerous position. The pregnancy ends after she takes abortifacient medicine, and watching her go through that made me feel terrible for her.

Her situation is especially sad because she spends so much of the story believing she understands the world she is living in and the role she is supposed to have.

Then the story slowly tears those assumptions apart.

I liked that the drama eventually allowed her to become more than simply “the other woman.”

She changes.

She begins working with Wanyin rather than against her, and eventually she sacrifices herself protecting her.

Her death was one of the saddest parts of the drama for me.

She definitely made bad decisions. She could be frustrating. But I understood enough about how she ended up where she did that I could not just hate her.

By the end, I mostly felt sorry for her.

The Romance Was Good — But GIVE ME MORE

This is probably one of the main reasons I landed at 4.5 instead of 5.

The emotional relationship is strong.

The chemistry is there.

The couple is stable.

They trust each other.

They are funny together.

They eventually become Emperor and Empress.

We even get actual intimacy instead of the drama acting like two adults who love each other are terrified of touching.

All good things.

But I still wanted more.

More kisses.

More affection.

More scenes of them simply being together without having to solve the nation's latest disaster.

More time with them actually enjoying their relationship.

The romance develops naturally, so I never felt cheated by the love story itself. I just wanted the drama to spend more time letting me enjoy the relationship it had already built.

Especially because Wang Churan and Cheng Lei had the chemistry to pull it off.

USE IT.

😂

The Separation — Not a Breakup

There is a later separation when Xiahou Dan sends Wanyin away because of the rebellion and the danger surrounding them.

Normally, the second I hear “separation,” I become suspicious.

But this one did not bother me the way typical C-drama breakup arcs do.

They do not stop loving each other.

There is no stupid romantic misunderstanding.

Nobody suddenly decides, “I love you, therefore I must destroy your heart and pretend I never cared about you.”

He is trying to protect her.

So I understood it.

Would I still rather have them stay together and face the danger as a team?

Yes.

Obviously.

But I did not consider this an actual breakup, and their reunion worked for me.

The Politics Were Where I Started Wandering Away

This is the biggest weakness for me.

There were stretches where the political storyline became more interesting than I expected.

And then there were stretches where I was basically waiting for Wanyin and Xiahou Dan to come back and entertain me again. 😂

There are a lot of schemes, factions, succession problems, military issues, rebellions, and people trying to manipulate the throne.

Some viewers will probably love all of that.

I was mostly here for the main couple.

The story definitely has more going on than the romance, which is not automatically a bad thing. But the political portions occasionally dragged enough that I felt the pacing.

That is probably the clearest difference between a drama I rate 4.5 and one I give a full 5.

I enjoyed almost everything here.

I just did not love every part equally.

THE VISUALS 😍

This deserves its own section because I loved basically everything about the way this drama looked.

The costumes were beautiful.

The female lead's styling was beautiful.

The male lead looked great.

The palace interiors, colors, hair, accessories, and overall production design made the drama feel polished and expensive.

There were plenty of scenes where I was just looking at what everyone was wearing.

Historical dramas do not automatically get points from me just because they have pretty costumes, but when the visual design is this consistently good, I notice.

And How Dare You!? was simply very pretty to watch.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

Final Verdict

How Dare You!? had almost everything I like.

A smart female lead.

A protective but respectful male lead.

A couple who actually functions like a team.

A stable relationship without endless breakups.

Great chemistry.

Comedy.

Beautiful costumes.

Beautiful visuals.

Cheng Lei looking like Cheng Lei.

😂

The main thing holding it back from a perfect rating was that some of the political material dragged, and the drama did not give me quite as much romance and physical affection as I wanted.

I loved Wanyin and Xiahou Dan more than I loved the overall plot.

But that couple was strong enough to carry a lot.

Their relationship felt funny, affectionate, supportive, and genuinely healthy, which is surprisingly difficult to find in dramas that surround their leads with this much political chaos.

I also appreciated that Xie Yong’er became an actual tragic character rather than staying a one-dimensional romantic rival. Her storyline hurt, especially knowing where it ultimately led.

Overall, How Dare You!? is funny, beautiful, romantic, occasionally heartbreaking, and anchored by a main couple I genuinely enjoyed watching together.

I just wanted more of them.

Final Rating: 4.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐½

Watch it for: Yu Wanyin and Xiahou Dan’s relationship, the comedy, Cheng Lei and Wang Churan’s chemistry, a capable female lead, a devoted male lead, and absolutely gorgeous costumes and visuals.

Maybe skip it if: you want romance to dominate every episode or you have very little patience for palace politics.

Would I recommend it? Yes — especially if you want a historical C-drama where the leads actually seem to like, trust, and enjoy each other instead of spending 30 episodes making themselves miserable.
