Research Note
I remembered my overall feelings about this drama much better than some of the exact episode details, so I went back and verified the plot and relationship timeline before finishing this review.
My rating and opinions are mine.
The episode-specific plot and relationship details were fact-checked afterward because apparently I remembered “protective Cheng Lei” much better than I remembered the entire military plot.
Priorities. 😂
Overall Thoughts
Apparently the thing I remembered most clearly about Legend of the Female General was also one of the best things about it:
HE FOUND OUT SHE WAS A WOMAN EARLY.
THANK YOU. 😂
I cannot explain how much I appreciated this.
There is nothing worse than watching a woman walk around looking suspiciously beautiful for 25 episodes while the supposedly brilliant male lead is standing there thinking:
“What a strangely delicate young man.”
SIR.
OPEN YOUR EYES.
Thankfully, Xiao Jue is not that man.
He figures He Yan out pretty early, and that immediately makes their relationship more interesting because now he knows exactly what kind of danger she is putting herself in.
And yes.
He becomes extra protective.
Obviously I liked that. 😂
But what I liked even more was that Xiao Jue never turns into:
“You are a woman, therefore you cannot fight anymore.”
NO.
He protects her, covers for her, worries about her, gets jealous over her, and still respects that He Yan is a ridiculously capable soldier.
That is how you protect a strong female lead without turning her into a helpless child.
This drama gets a lot right when it comes to their dynamic.
My biggest complaint is that after spending so much time building up the relationship, the drama waits until very late to actually let them be together.
And THAT is why this is a 4.5 instead of a 5.
Because you cannot make me wait until the final stretch for the real romantic payoff and then expect me not to complain.
😂
The Story
He Yan has spent most of her life being forced to live as someone else.
Because of her family, she is made to disguise herself as the male heir He Rufei. She eventually leaves, goes to war, earns military glory, and becomes the legendary General Feihong.
Then the real He Rufei comes back.
And naturally, instead of saying:
“Thank you for literally building our family's reputation.”
Her family basically goes:
“Wonderful. We will be taking all of that now.”
🙄
Her identity, her accomplishments, and everything she fought for are stolen from her.
She nearly dies because of them, survives, takes on a new identity, and joins the military again as He Yan.
That is where she reunites with Xiao Jue, an old academy classmate who has also become a powerful general.
He does not recognize exactly who she is at first, but he knows something about her is suspicious.
Which means we get distrust, military training, investigations, battles, revenge, political scheming, and eventually two extremely capable generals falling in love.
Basically:
She wants her life back.
He wants to know who the hell she actually is.
And somewhere in the middle, they fall for each other.
He Yan — Finally, A Female Lead Who Can Actually Fight
I really liked Zhou Ye here.
He Yan is not “strong” because the drama keeps telling us she is strong while everyone else rescues her every ten minutes.
She is actually capable.
She fights.
She strategizes.
She leads soldiers.
She protects people.
She earns respect.
And most importantly, she had already proven herself as General Feihong before the main story even really begins.
The tragedy is that everyone else took credit for what she accomplished.
So watching her slowly reclaim her identity was extremely satisfying.
And when people eventually try to argue that being a woman somehow means she should not be allowed to serve?
Absolutely not.
He Yan knows what she can do.
She has already done it.
She does not need anyone's permission to suddenly become competent.
That's my girl.
And Then Cheng Lei Happened. 😂
This was my first Cheng Lei drama.
And apparently that was all it took.
Because somewhere during Legend of the Female General, Xiao Jue went from:
“Oh, he's handsome.”
to:
“Oh no.”
to:
“Fine. He's my husband.”
😂😂😂
Cold general?
Yes.
Protective?
Yes.
Competent?
Yes.
Jealous while pretending he isn't jealous?
YES.
Looks ridiculously good in historical clothing?
Unfortunately, yes.
I never had a chance.
Xiao Jue has exactly the kind of personality I like in historical dramas.
He looks calm.
He acts calm.
Meanwhile, internally, he is approximately one inconvenience away from eliminating anyone who threatens He Yan.
And once he realizes she is a woman, the protectiveness gets even better because now he knows that her disguise being exposed could put her in even more danger.
But again, he does not treat her like she is fragile.
That matters.
He knows how strong she is.
He just wants to make sure she survives being strong.
Excellent husband behavior.
So yes.
This drama is also responsible for Cheng Lei entering Husband Hall.
I blame Xiao Jue.
😂
PLEASE THANK THE WRITERS FOR NOT DRAGGING OUT THE GENDER SECRET 😂
This might genuinely be one of my favorite things about this drama.
Xiao Jue knows He Yan is a woman by around Episode 9.
EPISODE NINE.
Not Episode 29.
Not during the finale.
Not after she gets pushed into a pond and magically loses half of her clothing.
EARLY.
😂
And honestly, that makes the romance better.
Instead of wasting half the drama on:
“Why do I feel strangely attracted to this man?”
we can actually watch Xiao Jue deal with the fact that:
- He Yan is a woman.
- She is hiding something much bigger than that.
- He is becoming increasingly attached to her.
- Other men keep appearing near her.
- He does not appreciate Number Four.
Much better use of everybody's time.
The Protective Xiao Jue Era Was My Favorite
Once Xiao Jue knows, there are so many little changes.
He watches her more closely.
He helps cover for her.
He takes care of her injuries.
He becomes more protective when they are in dangerous situations.
He notices other men around her.
And then we get the fake-married mission.
OF COURSE WE DO.
😂
Around Episode 15, He Yan has to pose as Xiao Jue's wife.
Because apparently putting two people who are already developing feelings for each other into a fake marriage has never caused romantic complications before.
Sure.
Perfectly normal military procedure.
Carry on.
😂
There is jealousy.
There is a forehead kiss.
There are increasingly obvious feelings.
There is even mouth-to-mouth resuscitation later.
But these two still refuse to hurry up and actually become a couple.
Which brings me to my one major complaint.
THE ROMANCE IS LATE. VERY LATE. 😂
This is the part I apparently remembered correctly too.
They take forever.
Not forever to develop feelings.
Those are obvious much earlier.
Forever to actually DO SOMETHING ABOUT THEM.
By the time we get to the final stretch, everyone with functioning eyesight already knows these two are in love.
Meanwhile, He Yan and Xiao Jue are apparently still processing the paperwork.
😂
The big mutual romantic payoff does not really arrive until Episode 34 when Xiao Jue finally gives her a proper confession and they kiss.
There are 36 episodes.
THIRTY-SIX.
Sir.
Ma'am.
We could have done this earlier.
😂
Which means if you are watching strictly for:
KISS KISS KISS KISS
this is not that drama.
The romance is much more about:
- Protecting each other
- Fighting beside each other
- Trust
- Jealousy
- Acts of service
- Quiet affection
- Long-term devotion
And I DID like that.
Their relationship feels earned.
But I absolutely wanted more actual couple time.
Give me the relationship before the drama is practically over!
I waited thirty-something episodes.
I would like to enjoy my reward for more than twelve minutes, thank you.
😂
This is honestly the main thing keeping the drama at 4.5 instead of 5 stars for me.
The romance itself is good.
The chemistry is good.
The payoff is good.
I just wanted MORE of it.
The Identity Conflict Is NOT A Breakup
Around Episode 22, things become uncomfortable between them.
Xiao Jue discovers that He Yan is not simply a woman hiding in the army.
She is the woman who once lived as He Rufei and became the real General Feihong before that identity and her military achievements were taken from her.
Unfortunately, that revelation is tied to an old battle involving Xiao Jue's family and soldiers, so he does not immediately know whether he can completely trust what she tells him.
Their relationship becomes distant.
But I would not count this as a breakup.
They are not officially together yet.
It is a trust conflict during the slow-burn stage.
And thankfully, the drama does not turn it into twenty episodes of:
“You lied to me!”
“I can explain!”
“I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT!”
storms away dramatically
No thank you.
The truth eventually comes out, the misunderstanding is resolved, and Xiao Jue realizes what actually happened.
Xiao Jue Supports Who She Actually Is
One of my favorite things about their relationship is that Xiao Jue never expects He Yan to abandon being a general just so she can become his wife.
This becomes especially important near the end.
Once He Yan's identity becomes public and she is officially recognized again, both of them hold serious military power.
Naturally, the Emperor starts getting nervous.
Because apparently two generals being in love means everyone in the palace immediately starts imagining a coup.
🙄
The Emperor basically forces them toward a choice involving marriage and military authority.
And Xiao Jue refuses to make He Yan give up everything she worked for.
He will not clip her wings just so he can marry her.
THAT.
That is why I liked him.
He loves He Yan.
Not some watered-down version of He Yan who stays home while he gets to continue being General Xiao Jue.
He wants the woman who fights beside him.
And that is exactly the kind of relationship I like.
Chu Zhao… Sir. Read the Room. 😂
Of course we also have Chu Zhao.
Because apparently one man peacefully loving the female lead is illegal.
Chu Zhao develops feelings for He Yan, and eventually the political situation becomes even messier when the Emperor tries to use him to separate He Yan and Xiao Jue.
Excuse me?
She doesn't want you.
😂
The Emperor eventually orders He Yan to marry Chu Zhao instead of Xiao Jue.
And He Yan's response is basically:
If I cannot marry Xiao Jue, then I would rather stay unmarried.
GOOD.
No hesitation.
No:
“Well, maybe Chu Zhao would make a good husband…”
NO.
She knows who she loves.
Xiao Jue knows who he loves.
Everyone knows who they love.
The Emperor is the only person creating unnecessary paperwork.
