A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

My Take

This was my first Cheng Yi drama, which in hindsight was a very dangerous way to meet Cheng Yi because I basically spent 59 episodes watching this man suffer beautifully and thinking, well, I guess I live here now.

And I loved it.

Normally, when I see 59 episodes, a small part of my soul starts preparing emergency supplies. That is a commitment. That is practically a relationship.

But somehow, Love and Redemption never felt like 59 episodes to me.

I genuinely did not think it dragged.

There was always something happening: another mystery, another reveal, another heavenly conspiracy, another demon problem, another person making Sifeng suffer for absolutely no reason, or Sifeng voluntarily finding a brand-new way to sacrifice himself because apparently self-preservation was never installed in this man.

The story starts with Chu Xuanji, who is born with impaired six senses and has trouble understanding normal sensory and emotional experiences. She meets Yu Sifeng, the masked disciple and young master of Lize Palace, and what starts as a cultivation friendship slowly turns into a huge story involving demons, gods, reincarnation, the God of War, the Star of Mosha, and about seventeen layers of:

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED A THOUSAND YEARS AGO?!

And somehow, the romance stays right in the middle of all of it.

That is probably the biggest reason this worked for me.

Yu Sifeng: Sir, Please Keep Some Blood Inside Your Body

I loved Sifeng.

Obviously.

This man has to be one of the most ridiculously devoted male leads I have ever watched.

Sifeng falls in love with Xuanji when she barely even understands what romantic love is, and instead of giving up like a sensible person, he apparently decides:

No. I shall suffer.

And suffer he does.

Whipping? Yes.

Torture? Yes.

Stabbing? Naturally.

Blood-spitting? Cheng Yi basically turned that into a separate acting category.

Sacrificing himself? Repeatedly.

Sacrificing himself across multiple incarnations?

SIR.

What makes Sifeng's devotion work for me is that the drama does not just tell me he loves Xuanji.

It spends practically the entire series proving it.

Over.

And over.

And over.

FOR TEN LIVES.

The Nine Previous Lifetimes Reveal Destroyed Me

One of my favorite reveals comes when Sifeng sees what happened during their previous mortal tribulations.

Across the nine lives before this one, he keeps choosing her.

He protects her.

He sacrifices for her.

He dies for her.

And again and again, their story ends badly.

At some point I had to wonder whether the universe personally had beef with Yu Sifeng.

That is what makes their current life so satisfying to me.

This is their tenth mortal life, and this time they finally change the ending.

Xuanji eventually learns the truth about how deeply he has loved her. She learns how to understand and return that love. Instead of another lifetime ending with Sifeng sacrificing everything while they lose each other again, they finally manage to choose each other and stay together.

Their happy ending does not feel random.

It feels like something they have been trying to reach for ten entire lifetimes.

AND THEN THEY REVEAL WHO SIFENG ACTUALLY IS

This reveal made me love the story even more.

Because Sifeng is not simply an unusually powerful golden-winged bird demon.

His deeper identity is Xi Xuan, the son of the Heavenly Emperor.

EXCUSE ME?

So this entire time I thought I was watching one extremely committed bird demon boyfriend.

No.

Apparently I was watching heavenly royalty voluntarily give up his immortal cultivation and follow this woman through ten mortal tribulations because he cared about her that much.

That reveal makes so much of Sifeng click into place.

Of course this lunatic has been sacrificing himself for her over and over.

He has literally been doing this since Heaven.

😂

And I especially love that Xi Xuan's involvement is not just romantic. His story is also tied to the injustice done to the God of War and to the larger idea that the Heavenly Realm is not automatically righteous just because it calls itself righteous.

Xuanji's Backstory Is Absolutely Wild

Then the drama starts pulling the rug out from underneath Xuanji's entire identity.

Her connection to the God of War is only part of the truth.

The greater reveal involving Luo Hou Jidu, the God of War, Bai Lin, and what the Heavenly Realm actually did completely changes how the story looks.

What initially seems like a straightforward conflict between Heaven and demons becomes much more complicated.

The supposedly righteous Heavenly Realm has done some truly horrible things.

Bai Lin/Hao Chen's obsession with controlling Xuanji becomes increasingly disturbing.

And the drama keeps asking whether being called a demon automatically makes someone evil, or whether claiming to act for righteousness automatically makes someone good.

I liked that the fantasy plot actually mattered.

I was not sitting there the entire time going:

"Can everybody stop talking about Heaven so I can get back to the kissing?"

Well.

Not all the time.

😂

The Romance

I loved Xuanji and Sifeng together.

Their relationship grows gradually because Xuanji literally has to learn what some of these emotions mean.

Sifeng realizes what he feels much earlier.

Xuanji takes longer.

But watching her slowly recognize attachment, jealousy, longing, attraction, protectiveness, and finally romantic love made the relationship satisfying.

The important thing for me is that the romance does not wait until the finale.

Their feelings develop throughout the drama. Xuanji starts actively choosing him long before the ending, and once she truly understands her feelings, she is not subtle about wanting Sifeng.

That is the type of progression I want.

Not:

Episode 58: I think I might like you.

Episode 59: wedding.

Goodbye.

No.

Give me the relationship while I still have a drama left to watch.

And Love and Redemption does.

Chemistry: Excellent. Kissing: GIVE ME MORE.

Their chemistry was very good.

I believed Sifeng was completely gone for this woman.

I believed Xuanji's feelings gradually changed from innocent attachment into actual romantic love.

Their sweeter scenes were adorable, especially because Sifeng could go from calm, intelligent cultivator to emotionally compromised boyfriend remarkably quickly whenever Xuanji got close to him.

But.

I have one complaint.

MORE KISSING.

You cannot give me a man who has loved somebody for TEN LIFETIMES and then act stingy with the kissing.

Absolutely not.

Where is my compensation?

Where are my accumulated ten-lifetime kisses?

I would like to speak to management.

There are kisses, and some very meaningful ones, but considering the amount of emotional suffering I personally endured alongside Sifeng, I still think we deserved more.

This is where that missing half-star lives.

😂

The Big Relationship Mess

Now, this drama absolutely has a stretch that would normally send me running for the exit.

Sifeng's demon identity comes out.

Evidence is manipulated.

Hao Chen/Bai Lin keeps interfering.

Xuanji and Sifeng misunderstand each other.

Sifeng decides that rather than explaining everything normally like a person with functioning vocal cords, he should protect Xuanji by making himself look even MORE suspicious.

Naturally.

Because we are in a xianxia.

There is a genuinely painful separation period, and Xuanji ultimately spends more than a year searching for Sifeng before their full reconciliation.

Normally?

Absolutely not. Jail.

I hate prolonged separation.

I hate misunderstandings.

I hate people refusing to explain themselves.

But somehow this drama got away with it.

I think it worked for me because the conflict was tied into the larger story—the demon prejudice, Xuanji's buried identity, Sifeng trying to protect her, and Bai Lin manipulating events—and because I was already so invested in them.

This is apparently one of my exceptions.

Do not abuse this privilege, C-dramas.

After what Sifeng went through, frankly the man should also have received property, a pension, and ten years of uninterrupted sleep.

About these assessments

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

Final Thoughts

I love Love and Redemption.

There is so much happening in this drama that explaining the mythology can start sounding like you are trying to recount a dream after taking cold medicine, but while I was watching it, I was completely invested.

The 59 episodes did not feel draggy to me at all.

I loved Xuanji and Sifeng.

I loved the chemistry.

I loved the fantasy story.

I loved uncovering what really happened in the Heavenly Realm.

I loved learning that Sifeng was actually Xi Xuan, the Heavenly Emperor's son.

But most of all, I loved the idea that Sifeng kept choosing Xuanji over and over across ten lifetimes.

Nine times, it ended badly.

Nine times, he sacrificed.

Nine times, they never got the life they should have had.

And then finally, in their tenth lifetime, they changed the ending.

They chose each other.

They survived.

They got married.

They built a family.

FINALLY.

And yes, they absolutely should have kissed more.

I sat through ten lifetimes.

I earned those kisses too.

😂❤️
