A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

My Review

This is my personal review of the 2026 Chinese drama, with relationship and ending spoilers where they help.

The Premise

I liked Love Between Lines a lot. The premise is also much more interesting than the usual modern C-drama setup. Hu Xiu meets Xiao Zhiyu through an immersive Republican-era murder mystery role-playing game, so the drama basically lets us watch their relationship develop in two different worlds.

Inside the game, they are playing characters surrounded by mystery, danger, hidden identities, and Republican-era drama. Then they meet again in real life. I actually liked both sides of the story. The murder mystery game gives the drama something different, while the modern storyline lets their relationship develop outside of the fantasy.

The game scenes were especially fun because their characters allowed them to flirt, argue, and explore feelings they were not always ready to admit in real life. I honestly would not have minded even more of the murder mystery game because it was one of the things that made Love Between Lines feel different from a standard workplace romance.

The Romance and Chemistry

Let me get the important part out of the way.

There are so many kisses.

And apparently I was not imagining it. Love Between Lines reportedly has 27 kiss scenes or moments across 28 episodes.

Twenty-seven.

Thank you.

This is what I want when a drama spends this much time developing a romance. Hu Xiu and Xiao Zhiyu do not finally become a couple and then suddenly forget they are attracted to each other.

They kiss. They flirt. They cuddle.

They touch each other. They actually behave like two people who are in love.

Chen Xingxu and Lu Yuxiao had excellent chemistry, and their kisses did not all feel like the exact same obligatory drama kiss either. We get sweet kisses, playful kisses, passionate kisses, and genuinely romantic moments throughout the relationship. The romance also continues AFTER they become an official couple, which I really appreciated. Their relationship becomes official in Episode 19, so we actually get time to watch them BE a couple instead of waiting until the finale for a confession.

This drama definitely understood the assignment when it came to romantic payoff. Unfortunately, it apparently also decided that every romance needs an unnecessary breakup near the end.

I'll get to that.

Who Fell First?

This is basically a she fell first, he fell harder romance. Hu Xiu is attracted to Xiao Zhiyu early through their interactions in the murder mystery game.

She is also the one who makes the first obvious romantic move and kisses him first. But once Xiao Zhiyu falls, he FALLS. He starts getting jealous, becomes increasingly protective and attentive toward her, and eventually reaches the point where he cannot keep pretending he doesn't have feelings for her. He is ultimately the one who formally confesses in Episode 19 and turns their relationship into an official one.

I liked this progression because it did not feel like only one person was doing all the work. She falls first. She kisses first. He falls harder.

He confesses. And then we actually get to enjoy them together.

The Acting and Styling

The acting was superb. Both Chen Xingxu and Lu Yuxiao were excellent, especially because they had to play the modern characters while also performing different personas inside the murder mystery game. The chemistry worked because both actors were able to sell the attraction, humor, jealousy, emotional scenes, and quieter moments between the characters.

I also need to talk about Lu Yuxiao's makeup because her makeup was so pretty. She looked gorgeous. The makeup, hair, clothes, and overall styling really suited her, and I kept noticing how pretty she looked throughout the drama.

Honestly, the styling of BOTH leads was excellent. Chen Xingxu looked great. Lu Yuxiao looked beautiful.

And because the drama moves between modern life and the Republican-era game setting, we get more than one visual style from them. The production clearly knew it had two very attractive leads and took full advantage of it. No complaints from me.

The Unnecessary Breakup

Now we need to talk about the breakup because this annoyed me. After spending so much time developing Hu Xiu and Xiao Zhiyu into a couple who actually work well together, the writers suddenly decide we need a late-stage breakup.

And of course it is based on a misunderstanding about their parents. Hu Xiu's family believes Xiao Zhiyu's father was responsible for the stadium collapse that injured her father and killed someone close to him. Because of that history, Hu Xiu feels guilty about continuing her relationship with Xiao Zhiyu and breaks up with him.

Except Xiao Zhiyu had absolutely nothing to do with any of it. He was literally a child when the stadium collapsed. Hu Xiu KNOWS that. She even defends him and makes it clear that children should not be blamed for what their parents did.

So why are we breaking up with him?

Then the drama makes the whole thing even more frustrating by revealing shortly afterward that his father was not responsible either. So basically, we had to watch Hu Xiu and Xiao Zhiyu painfully separate over something that was not even true.

I understand why Hu Xiu felt torn between the man she loved and her injured father. Her family's trauma was real. But from a storytelling perspective, I still thought the breakup was unnecessary.

They still loved each other. Neither one betrayed the other. Xiao Zhiyu was innocent. And the truth was revealed shortly afterward anyway.

It felt like the drama suddenly remembered that we had reached the final stretch and decided we needed one more romantic obstacle. Thankfully, the breakup does not drag on forever. But I still could have done without it.

Xiao Zhiyu's Father's Story

This was probably the weakest part of the main storyline for me. The story involving Xiao Zhiyu's father and the stadium collapse was interesting in theory.

It explains a huge part of Xiao Zhiyu's childhood, his family history, and the connection between his family and Hu Xiu's family. We eventually learn that Xiao Zhiyu's father, Qin Yuze, was NOT responsible for the stadium collapse. His design was sound. Pei Kanghua had secretly replaced the required construction steel with inferior material for financial gain, framed Qin Yuze after the collapse, and the truth surrounding Qin Yuze's death was even darker than everyone originally believed.

That is HUGE.

This is a revelation that changes Xiao Zhiyu's understanding of his father, affects his mother, explains years of family trauma, clears his father's name, and connects directly to Hu Xiu's family. And somehow the drama rushes through it. The storyline felt too thin for something this important. The reveal comes very late, and then suddenly we are racing through evidence, investigations, confrontations, family revelations, and consequences.

I understood what happened. I just wanted the story to give it more room to breathe. For something that shaped Xiao Zhiyu's entire life, I expected a bigger emotional payoff.

What makes this even more frustrating is that the drama DID have extra screen time available. It just decided to spend some of it on a second couple I did not need.

The Second Male Lead

Pei Zhen annoyed me. I know a second male lead is supposed to create some tension, but at a certain point I was simply tired of him.

His feelings for Hu Xiu get tangled up with his rivalry and resentment toward Xiao Zhiyu, and that makes his involvement in their relationship even more irritating. He eventually exposes information about Xiao Zhiyu's identity, which contributes directly to the mess surrounding Hu Xiu's family and their breakup. That did not exactly improve my opinion of him.

The drama gives him more depth than a completely one-dimensional villain, and I understand that his relationship with his father and Xiao Zhiyu is complicated. But understanding why someone behaves the way they do does not mean I have to enjoy watching them do it. I found him annoying.

The Second Couple

The second couple was another part of the drama I could have done without. I did not hate Zhao Xiaorou and Gong Huaicong.

I just did not need an entire second romance. Their storyline felt like an unnecessary addition that was mainly there to prolong the drama. And that becomes especially noticeable when the main story involving Xiao Zhiyu's father feels rushed.

I would have MUCH rather taken some of the screen time devoted to the second couple and used it to develop the stadium collapse, Qin Yuze's story, the investigation, and the emotional fallout. The main couple was strong enough to carry this drama.

Hu Xiu and Xiao Zhiyu already had the romance, chemistry, family conflict, workplace story, murder mystery game, and mystery surrounding their parents. We had plenty. The second couple just made parts of the drama feel longer than they needed to be.

The Ending

Ending spoilers

Thankfully, after putting me through that unnecessary breakup, the drama gives Hu Xiu and Xiao Zhiyu a genuinely happy ending. The truth about the stadium collapse is uncovered. Xiao Zhiyu's father is cleared.

Hu Xiu and Xiao Zhiyu reconcile. And most importantly, the drama lets them stay together and actually enjoy being a couple again. There is a temporary business trip near the end, but this is NOT another breakup.

Their relationship is secure. They continue supporting each other's careers, Hu Xiu succeeds with her own architectural work, and Xiao Zhiyu comes back to surprise her. They even adopt a stray kitten and become their own little family of three.

And yes. We get another kiss. The drama ends with the two of them together, happy, affectionate, and looking toward their future.

No tragic twist. No ambiguous ending. No permanent separation. No nonsense.

Clear happy ending.

Exactly how I want my romance dramas to end.

MY PERSONAL VERDICT

Final Verdict

I liked Love Between Lines. It is not perfect, and I definitely have complaints about the final stretch.

The storyline involving Xiao Zhiyu's father should have been developed more. The breakup was unnecessary. Pei Zhen annoyed me.

And I could have done without the second couple taking up screen time that could have gone toward the main story. But the things this drama does well, it does REALLY well. The leads have excellent chemistry. The acting is superb.

The styling is beautiful. Lu Yuxiao's makeup is gorgeous. The murder mystery game gives the drama something different. The relationship becomes official before the finale.

We actually get to watch Hu Xiu and Xiao Zhiyu be a couple. And there are reportedly 27 kiss scenes.

Twenty-seven.

Thank you.

Most importantly, the romance has real payoff and a clear happy ending. Would I change parts of the final stretch? Absolutely.

Would I still recommend it to someone who wants a modern C-drama with attractive leads, strong chemistry, lots of physical affection, and an actual romantic payoff? Yes. Especially if you also believe C-drama couples should kiss more than twice per series.
