King of Comedy C-Drama Sets October 6 Premiere on iQIYI and Migu Video

The wait is almost over for King of Comedy (喜剧之王).

The new Chinese comedy drama starring Yang Chaoyue and Jiang Long is officially scheduled to premiere on October 6, 2026.

The series will launch in China on iQIYI and Migu Video, with iQIYI’s official upcoming-release page now listing the October 6 date.

And no, this is not simply a television remake of Stephen Chow’s 1999 movie with different actors dropped into the same story.

The drama takes the familiar King of Comedy idea of ordinary people chasing something bigger and moves it into an entirely new setting.

Who Stars in King of Comedy?

Yang Chaoyue stars as A Zhen, while Jiang Long plays Zhou Ke.

The main cast also includes Zhang Chi and Jiang Shimeng, along with a large group of performers from China’s comedy scene.

Jiang Long is also part of the directing team.

The drama is planned for 24 episodes.

What Is King of Comedy About?

The story takes place in Shapu, a coastal fishing village struggling with population loss and redevelopment pressure.

A Zhen is one of the villagers who does not want to simply give up her hometown.

Zhou Ke, meanwhile, is a struggling actor who becomes involved with the village and its increasingly chaotic attempt to protect itself.

The villagers eventually try to use the King of Comedy name and their own creativity to bring attention to Shapu and find another future for the community.

Naturally, things do not go according to plan.

The result looks more like a village comedy about underdogs, performance, community and people trying to save their home than a straightforward remake of the original movie.

Is King of Comedy a Romance?

There does appear to be a relationship developing between A Zhen and Zhou Ke, and iQIYI’s current synopsis says their relationship gradually grows as they work together.

However, this is being promoted primarily as a comedy and drama, not as a romance-first C-drama.

So if you are coming for Yang Chaoyue and Jiang Long’s relationship, I would go in expecting the village story and comedy to take up a lot of screen time too.

Once the drama begins airing, I’ll be watching for the important questions:

Do A Zhen and Zhou Ke actually become a couple?

Do we get proper romantic development?

Do they break up?

And, eventually:

Do they get a happy ending?

Because obviously I have priorities.

Is King of Comedy a Remake of Stephen Chow’s Movie?

Not exactly.

The series is connected to the famous 1999 film King of Comedy, but it tells a new story with new characters.

Rather than recreating the movie scene by scene, the drama takes the original theme of ordinary people trying to pursue their dreams and places it inside a modern fishing-village story.

So viewers familiar with Stephen Chow’s film should expect references and thematic connections, not a direct copy of the original plot.
