Opening thoughts
If you came to Pursuit of Jade for the romance, you will not leave disappointed.
Starring Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei, Pursuit of Jade (逐玉) is a 2026 historical romance centered on Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng, two people who enter a marriage of convenience for very different reasons and somehow end up becoming exactly what the other person needs.
After finishing all 40 episodes, the romance is still what stands out most to me.
I honestly could not imagine a better pairing for these two characters.
The Romance Absolutely Delivers
The relationship between Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng is easily one of the strongest parts of Pursuit of Jade.
Their feelings actually develop on screen. They spend time together, learn how the other person thinks, protect each other and gradually become emotionally important to one another.
That makes the romance feel earned.
Their marriage may begin as an arrangement, but the relationship slowly changes until the line between pretending and genuinely caring about each other disappears.
And the chemistry works. 😍
Tian Xiwei and Zhang Linghe feel comfortable together in a way that makes even smaller romantic moments effective. I believed these two people cared about one another, which is something that can make or break an entire romance drama for me.
I really cannot imagine another pairing working quite as well.
Zhang Linghe Surprised Me
Here is something I was not expecting to say.
I am not actually that much of a Zhang Linghe fan.
I have watched him before, and while I know he has a huge fanbase, I have never personally been one of the people completely obsessed with him.
But I have to give him credit here.
He nailed Xie Zheng.
The character needs restraint, intensity, vulnerability and protectiveness without constantly announcing those qualities to the audience.
Zhang Linghe pulled that off.
Some of his best moments are actually the quieter ones. Xie Zheng does not always need a huge speech for you to understand what he is feeling, and Zhang Linghe handled that side of the character especially well.
His chemistry with Tian Xiwei also helped sell the relationship.
So no, Pursuit of Jade did not magically turn me into the president of the Zhang Linghe fan club. 😂
But this performance absolutely impressed me.
Minor Character Spoilers
Xie Zheng’s Hidden Identity Makes Him Even More Interesting
Another part of the story I really enjoyed was Xie Zheng’s hidden identity.
When Fan Changyu first meets him, he appears to be this injured, weak and relatively harmless man who needs help. He is living under the name Yan Zheng, and for a while she has no idea that the man she brought into her life is actually Xie Zheng, the Marquis of Wu’an.
That contrast made his character much more fun to watch.
On the surface, he can play the quiet and physically vulnerable husband. In reality, he is a powerful nobleman, an experienced fighter and someone carrying a much larger revenge story behind him.
It also makes a lot of his earlier scenes more entertaining in hindsight because you start noticing all the moments where the “weak husband” act does not quite match what he is actually capable of. 👀
And when Fan Changyu finally learns who he really is, I understood why she was angry.
She did not just discover that he had kept a small secret from her. She found out that the man she had been protecting and worrying about was actually the Marquis of Wu’an, with an entirely different life, position and history that he had deliberately hidden from her.
What I liked, though, is that the identity reveal adds conflict without destroying the romance.
It gives them something legitimate to work through rather than creating drama through a stupid misunderstanding.
For me, that made the reveal much more satisfying.
Tian Xiwei Was the Right Fan Changyu
Tian Xiwei also deserves a lot of credit for making Fan Changyu work.
Changyu could easily have become one of those supposedly "strong female leads" who spend half the drama proving how tough they are while the script forgets to give them any emotional depth.
Thankfully, that is not what happens here.
She is strong, stubborn, capable and willing to fight, but she is also allowed to care deeply about her family and Xie Zheng.
Her strength does not require her to become emotionally cold.
That balance is important because the romance works best when Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng feel like partners rather than one person constantly rescuing the other.
From Debt Collectors to Found Family
One thing I unexpectedly loved was the development of the supporting characters.
Some of them literally enter the story as enemies showing up to collect a debt, and at that point I definitely did not expect to become emotionally attached to them.
But somehow, those hostile beginnings slowly turn into genuine friendship and loyalty.
They go from arguing, threatening each other and causing problems to becoming people Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng can actually depend on. By the time they are standing together on the battlefield, fighting side by side, the change feels completely natural because we have watched those relationships develop along the way.
I loved that.
It gave the drama a real found-family feeling without forcing it. These characters did not suddenly become best friends because the plot needed extra bodies for a battle scene. Their loyalty was built through shared experiences, hardship, trust and all the smaller moments in between.
It also made the later battlefield scenes much more meaningful.
They were no longer just random supporting characters fighting alongside the leads. These were people who had started out on completely opposite sides and somehow ended up becoming a little family.
That kind of character development is one of the things Pursuit of Jade does especially well.
And honestly, watching former debt collectors eventually risk their lives beside the same people they once came to threaten is exactly the kind of full-circle storytelling I love. ❤️
The Story Is Well Executed — Mostly
Overall, I thought the story was well executed.
The earlier part of the drama does an especially good job balancing several different elements at once: the romance, village life, family relationships, hidden identities, revenge and the larger mystery surrounding Xie Zheng.
There is enough happening to keep the story moving without immediately drowning the romance in court politics.
That balance is one of the reasons the first portion of the drama works so well.
The supporting characters also help make that earlier world feel alive. Their gradual transformation from hostile outsiders into loyal companions gives the story emotional continuity even as the drama expands into larger political and military conflicts.
However, the drama is not flawless.
Where Pursuit of Jade Falls Short
The second half becomes noticeably less balanced than the first.
As the political, military and revenge storylines become more important, some of the intimacy and charm of the earlier episodes naturally gets pushed aside.
There are also supporting characters and story threads that receive substantial development early on but do not get quite the same attention later.
The final stretch is where I noticed the biggest problem.
The drama spends a long time carefully building its mysteries, relationships and political conflicts, but then several important revelations and resolutions arrive very quickly.
Some of those moments needed more room to breathe.
Instead of allowing every revelation to have the emotional impact it deserved, the ending occasionally feels like the drama is trying to get through several remaining plot points before the clock runs out.
A few more episodes probably would have helped.
I also would have preferred some later revelations to be dramatized more fully instead of having so much information explained in a relatively short period of time.
None of this ruined the drama for me, but the difference between the careful pacing of the beginning and the compressed pacing near the end is noticeable.
But The Romance Remains the Heart of the Drama
Thankfully, Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng remain the emotional anchor.
Even when the story expands into battles, revenge and political conflict, I remained invested because I cared about what happened to them.
That matters.
There are plenty of dramas with complicated plots that eventually make me stop caring because the central relationship disappears somewhere underneath all the politics.
Pursuit of Jade never completely loses sight of its couple.
And for someone like me who watches historical dramas largely for the romance, that makes a huge difference.
