My Review
Rain-Kissed Fate had everything that should normally work for me: contract marriage, secret children, good chemistry, kissing, family drama, jealous rivals, and a male lead who apparently had a personal disagreement with shirts.
And yet somehow, these people still managed to make a fairly straightforward romance way more complicated than it needed to be.
I liked the drama. I just spent a lot of it thinking, CAN EVERYONE PLEASE COMMUNICATE LIKE ADULTS?
The Setup
Six years after Bu Yan spends a night with boxer He Yuchen, she comes back into his life with twins.
What He Yuchen does not know is that the children are his.
Bu Yan’s son has leukemia, and she needs a compatible blood source for his treatment. Her solution is to approach He Yuchen and enter into a contract marriage with him while hiding the real reason she needs him.
And this is where one of my biggest problems with the drama begins.
Girl. Just tell him.
I understand that Bu Yan was scared. I understand that the situation was complicated. But she could have saved everyone a ridiculous amount of trouble by simply explaining why she needed him.
Instead, she hides everything.
Of course she does, because otherwise we would not have 30 episodes. 😂
The Contract Marriage Was Fun... Mostly
I normally love a contract-marriage setup, and this one was enjoyable once Bu Yan and He Yuchen started living together and the attraction became obvious.
The problem is that their relationship spends way too much time going hot and cold.
They have chemistry.
They clearly care about each other.
They kiss.
They get jealous.
They act married.
Then somebody interferes.
Someone hides something.
Someone pulls away.
Repeat.
Their real mutual confession does not come until around Episode 17, which is already more than halfway through the drama. Even after that, the writers are not finished messing with them.
So although the chemistry was excellent, the actual relationship payoff came too late for me.
🔥 The Chemistry Was Definitely There
This was easily the strongest part of the romance.
Chen Fangtong and Dai Gaozheng had excellent chemistry, and the kissing and physical affection were good.
There is one particular romantic scene in the car that I definitely remembered. 😏
And then we have Dai Gaozheng.
Or more specifically:
Dai Gaozheng without a shirt.
Apparently He Yuchen lives in a climate where shirts are optional.
Was this important to the plot?
No.
Did it improve my viewing experience?
Absolutely. 😂
There were points when the relationship drama was exhausting me, and suddenly He Yuchen would appear shirtless.
Morale restored.
The Secret-Child Trope 👶
The twins were one of the best parts of the drama.
I loved Bu Yan as a mother, I loved the children, and I especially loved watching He Yuchen interact with them.
The father-child scenes were adorable.
My issue is that the secret went on too long.
He Yuchen should have learned that they were his children much earlier.
The secret-child trope itself did not bother me. I actually like this trope when it is done well. But combined with Bu Yan hiding her reason for approaching him, the drama had too many major secrets sitting between two people who desperately needed one honest conversation.
By the time He Yuchen finally learns the truth near the end, I was basically yelling:
FINALLY.
Tang Ze: Sir, She Does Not Want You
Tang Ze was one of the most annoying parts of this drama.
Bu Yan made it clear that she did not love him.
She was not interested.
She did not secretly want him.
There was no mysterious hidden signal telling him to keep trying.
And yet this man simply refused to take the hint.
Actually, forget the hint.
It was not a hint anymore. She was telling him.
He kept pushing himself into her life, interfering with her relationship with He Yuchen, and creating real problems between them.
At one point, his interference nearly ruined parts of the drama for me.
What makes it worse is that I did not blame Bu Yan for this. She was clear enough.
Tang Ze simply refused to accept an answer he did not like.
Sir.
GO HOME.
Wen Li: Apparently Taking a Hint Was Not in the Curriculum Either
Then we have Wen Li.
Because apparently one annoying love rival was not enough.
Wen Li was basically Tang Ze’s female counterpart.
He could not accept that Bu Yan did not want him.
She could not accept that He Yuchen did not want her.
Perfect.
Wen Li was manipulative, persistent, and especially irritating because she used He Yuchen’s mother to interfere with his relationship with Bu Yan.
She knew exactly where the weak point was and kept using it.
Between Tang Ze and Wen Li, I honestly cannot decide who annoyed me more.
They were equally exhausting in completely different directions.
He Yuchen’s Mother Was Blind as a Bat
And speaking of his mother...
Ma’am.
PLEASE LOOK AROUND.
She annoyed me because she was completely blind to what was actually happening around her.
Wen Li could manipulate the situation right in front of her, and somehow she still struggled to recognize the truth.
She made the relationship conflict worse instead of helping anything.
She does improve somewhat later, so I did not hate her forever.
But even after her partial redemption, I still remembered how much unnecessary chaos she helped create.
He Yuchen did defend Bu Yan at times, but I also wanted him to shut his mother down harder.
Sometimes “Mom, please stop” is simply not enough. 😂
The Biggest Problem: Nobody Communicates
This was easily one of my biggest complaints.
Bu Yan hides why she needs He Yuchen.
He Yuchen makes assumptions.
Bu Yan pulls away.
He Yuchen contributes to the hot-and-cold behavior too.
The love rivals interfere.
His mother believes the wrong people.
Secrets pile on top of secrets.
Half the plot could have been prevented if someone had simply sat everyone down at a table and said:
“Okay. Nobody leaves until we explain everything.”
I understand that Bu Yan was afraid.
I understand why she did not immediately want to reveal everything.
But emotionally understandable does not always mean logically smart.
Sometimes it was just frustrating.
But the Acting Was Excellent
One area where I really had no complaints was the acting.
The performances were excellent overall.
Chen Fangtong handled Bu Yan’s emotional scenes, motherhood, stubbornness, fear, and romantic moments really well.
Dai Gaozheng also worked well as He Yuchen, especially because the character had to balance the tougher boxer image with the softer family scenes.
The supporting actors also did their jobs very well.
Possibly too well, considering how much I wanted Tang Ze and Wen Li to disappear. 😂
The Children Were Adorable
The parenting scenes were some of my favorite parts.
I loved seeing Bu Yan with the children, and He Yuchen was especially cute once he started naturally falling into the father role without even realizing the full truth.
Those scenes gave the drama some warmth that it really needed between all the scheming, jealousy, secrets, family problems, and relationship ping-pong.
The kids were not annoying plot accessories.
I genuinely liked them.
