Should You Watch Rebirth?
If you like historical power struggles, warfare, complicated romance, and characters making sacrifices for one another, Rebirth has plenty of those elements.
Its biggest romantic payoff is the main couple's wedding. Its biggest drawback is an ending that doesn't provide complete emotional certainty.
If you absolutely need a straightforward romantic happy ending, I'd be careful with this one.
My Review
Another sad ending. I think. 😭
Apparently, I have reached the point where I can't even remember whether my historical dramas ended happily or tragically. I just remember the emotional damage. 😂
Rebirth continues the story of Princess Agents, following Chu Qiao and Zhuge Yue after the devastating battle at the frozen lake.
The story revolves around revenge, political power struggles, mistaken deaths, sacrifice, and the fight to free people from oppression.
And yes, there is romance. Zhuge Yue and Chu Qiao eventually marry, which sounds like we're finally getting the romantic payoff.
Except this is a historical C-drama, and apparently, happiness must come with additional suffering.
The ending shows them living together with their children, but the final time jump introduces a sadder perspective. Whether the happier scenes represent the complete reality is open to interpretation.
So my memory of another sad ending wasn't entirely wrong.
Final rating: 3/5. I finished it, but the ending is what stayed with me.
Does Rebirth Have a Happy Ending?
Ambiguous/Open, with bittersweet elements. Episode 40 depicts recovery and family life with two children, followed by an epilogue implying later death separation. An unequivocal romantic happy ending is not established.
Ending Classification: Ambiguous/Open, with bittersweet elements.
Episode 40 contains several important developments:
- Chu Qiao suffers life-threatening injuries during the final battle.
- Zhuge Yue reaches her and promises to bring her home.
- A later sequence shows Chu Qiao recovering.
- Zhuge Yue and Chu Qiao are shown raising a son and daughter together.
- A decades-later epilogue depicts an elderly Zhuge Yue and Yan Xun remembering Chu Qiao.
- The epilogue implies Chu Qiao has died before them.
The happier family scenes are presented in the narrative, but their relationship to the final epilogue leaves room for interpretation.
Lead actress Huangyang Tiantian has also described the conclusion as open-ended while leaning toward a positive interpretation.
My conclusion: The drama gives the main couple a depicted happy period together, but it doesn't deliver a completely straightforward, everlasting romantic happy ending.
Do They Break Up?
Yes — a major post-marriage relationship rupture and estrangement, around Episodes 33–39, despite no confirmed formal divorce. Chu Qiao learns the truth about Zhuge Yue’s secret protection around Episode 39, allowing reconciliation.
There is no confirmed formal divorce.
However, their relationship goes through significant conflict and estrangement after they marry.
- Episode 27: They marry.
- Episode 33: Zhuge Yue leaves Chu Qiao as part of his secret plans.
- Episodes 35–37: Their trust deteriorates, creating serious estrangement.
- Episode 39: Chu Qiao learns the truth about his intentions, allowing reconciliation.
This is not a consistently stable marriage without separation or emotional conflict.

Final Thoughts
Another historical drama with a complicated ending. 😭
I can't even confidently call it a happy ending without attaching an explanation.
At least the main couple gets a wedding and a depicted family life. But that final epilogue makes the emotional payoff much harder to categorize.
