Should You Watch The Legend of Shen Li?
My verdict: Recommended — 4/5.
If you enjoy fantasy adventures with a badass female lead, a powerful male lead, and a romance that eventually gets a proper happy ending, this is worth considering.
The biggest strength for me was the story, especially having a female lead who is actually capable of handling herself.
The biggest romance drawback is how long divine responsibilities prevent the couple from fully acting on their feelings.
But at least the finale actually gives us an ending instead of leaving everyone to invent their own interpretation. 😂
My Review: I Loved the Story ❤️
Okay, so here's something funny. I originally stopped watching this drama around Episode 12.
But I eventually came back, finished all 39 episodes, and gave it 4/5 because I loved the story.
Apparently, this drama and I needed a second chance. 😂
The Legend of Shen Li follows Shen Li, a powerful general who refuses to accept an arranged political marriage. After being injured, she reverts to her phoenix form, gets mistaken for a chicken, and ends up being purchased by a mysterious mortal named Xing Yun.
Yes. Our mighty general's romantic journey begins with her being sold as poultry. 😭
What follows becomes much bigger than their unusual first meeting. The story connects Shen Li's mysterious origins, the responsibilities of the immortal realms, supernatural enemies, and the complicated existence of the last ancient god.
And underneath everything is a romance between two people whose responsibilities make their relationship extraordinarily difficult.
👑 Shen Li: Now THIS Is a Female Lead!
One thing I loved besides the story? Shen Li is a BADASS! 🔥
She's a powerful general who can actually fight her own battles. She's strong, independent, capable, and doesn't need the male lead constantly rescuing her.
I love female leads who can hold their own, and Shen Li definitely delivers.
She's not some helpless little flower waiting for someone to save her. 😂
Give me more female leads like this, please! ❤️
❤️ Shen Li and Xing Zhi: The Main Couple
Shen Li is a military commander, a powerful fighter, and someone who takes her responsibilities seriously. Her storyline gives her conflicts that extend beyond romance.
Xing Zhi, meanwhile, is the last ancient god. He's enormously powerful, but that power comes with restrictions and responsibilities that make loving Shen Li dangerous.
Their romantic conflict isn't simply about whether they have feelings for each other. It's about what happens when pursuing those feelings could threaten the worlds they're responsible for protecting.
Of course, Xing Zhi doesn't always handle his emotions particularly well.
Being an ancient god apparently doesn't automatically come with emotional intelligence. 🙄😂
💋 Romance, Chemistry & Intimacy
This is a romance with a long buildup and a much stronger payoff in the later episodes.
Shen Li and Xing Zhi develop feelings early, but their relationship remains complicated by divine rules and Shen Li's arranged engagement to Fu Rong.
The first kiss in Episode 6 is exceptionally restrained. Their more passionate romantic turning point comes in Episode 30.
Episode 31 also implies that they sleep together, although the drama doesn't explicitly show intercourse.
Their relationship includes protective gestures, physical affection, teasing, jealousy, and moments of emotional vulnerability.
The story gives the couple some domestic time together, particularly after their relationship progresses.
💔 Do Shen Li and Xing Zhi Break Up?
No. There is no formal breakup after they establish their relationship.
However, that does NOT mean they spend the entire drama happily together.
- Xing Zhi initially conceals his identity and resists the romance.
- Their duties repeatedly interfere with their relationship.
- Shen Li is presumed dead following a major battle.
- Xing Zhi later confines her in Extranatural Heaven for her protection.
- Xing Zhi dies after the final conflict, leading to a separation lasting years.
These are significant romantic obstacles and separations, but they should not be incorrectly categorized as a formal breakup.

Does The Legend of Shen Li Have a Happy Ending?
YES — an unmistakable Happy Ending. ❤️
The final conflict initially appears tragic.
Shen Li's father, Feng Lai, sacrifices himself to protect her and help save the realms. Xing Zhi also exhausts his divine power and dies.
Shen Li refuses to abandon his body and preserves it while grieving his death.
Eventually, the remaining power of the ancient gods brings Xing Zhi back. The two reunite and begin living together peacefully.
Episode 39 provides an extended epilogue rather than ending immediately after their reunion.
Xing Zhi proposes, Shen Li accepts, and she reveals that she is pregnant.
Final status: Engaged, expecting a child, and together.
Their wedding is discussed but not shown, so describing them as already married would be inaccurate.

Final Thoughts — My Rating: 4/5 ⭐
The Legend of Shen Li is one of those dramas I initially didn't finish, but eventually returned to and completed.
And my final reaction?
I loved the story, and Shen Li is such a badass female lead! 👑🔥
The romance involves plenty of supernatural complications, but the series ultimately gives Shen Li and Xing Zhi a genuinely happy resolution.
No guessing whether the male lead survived. No vague reunion that requires a detective board and seventeen fan theories. 😂
We actually get to see them together and building a future.
Final Rating: 4/5 — Finished.
