Story of Kunning Palace — Review
I liked Story of Kunning Palace.
It gave me a smart female lead, a complicated second-chance story, political scheming, attractive men making questionable decisions, and one male lead who appears to be approximately one inconvenience away from committing treason at any given moment.
So naturally, I was entertained. 😂
My biggest complaint is the romance.
Not because it was bad.
Because it took approximately 84 years to GET THERE.
Jiang Xuening Is Actually Smart
Thank you.
A female lead who has a functioning brain.
Jiang Xuening is strategic.
She learns.
She thinks ahead.
She understands that actions have consequences.
She is not wandering through political danger trusting every smiling person who offers her tea.
I appreciate that.
Her second chance also gives the story an interesting perspective because she knows where many of her previous choices led.
She is not perfect, but she is capable.
That already puts her ahead of a lot of historical-drama heroines for me.
And Then There Is Xie Wei 😂
Zhang Linghe is completely, gloriously unhinged in this drama.
Xie Wei is:
- calculating
- possessive
- traumatized
- dangerous
- emotionally questionable
- brilliant
- occasionally terrifying
- and unfortunately extremely attractive
Basically:
What if a red flag had cheekbones? 🚩😂
This man does not flirt.
He looms.
Half the time he is standing there looking like he already knows how the next seven political disasters are going to happen.
And the other half I am wondering whether somebody should perhaps remove the sharp objects from the room.
Zhang Linghe was excellent.
He managed to make Xie Wei intimidating, intelligent, obsessive, vulnerable, and attractive without turning him into a flat cartoon villain.
I completely understood why the character worked.
The Romance: GOOD… BUT WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG? 😭
The chemistry was there.
The tension was there.
The attraction was there.
The potential was VERY there.
SO KISS THE GIRL.
😂
This is one of those romances where I spent a significant portion of the drama waiting for the story to finally stop circling the relationship and actually let the relationship HAPPEN.
Once the romance starts paying off, it is good.
The kissing scenes are good.
Their chemistry works.
Xie Wei being Xie Wei gives the relationship intensity.
But I wanted more actual couple time.
More affection.
More kisses.
More time seeing them function as a couple after all of that buildup.
The drama made me wait forever and then did not give me enough reward for my patience.
The Politics
There is a lot happening politically.
Schemes.
Power struggles.
Past grievances.
Court problems.
People manipulating other people who are already manipulating somebody else.
Sometimes historical dramas lose me when the politics completely swallow the characters.
This one generally kept me interested because the political material actually matters to the people involved.
But I was still watching partly like:
“Yes, yes, political crisis, very serious. Can we return to the unhinged man and the woman he is obsessed with now?” 😂
The Other Men
Jiang Xuening does not exactly suffer from a shortage of male attention.
There are multiple complicated emotional connections around her, and they all serve different parts of the story.
But once Xie Wei really entered the equation for me?
Sir, everyone else may begin collecting their belongings.
😂
I Felt Bad for Her Sister
I also genuinely felt bad for Jiang Xuening's sister.
Her situation frustrated me because the man involved had absolutely no backbone.
She deserved somebody willing to actually choose her properly.
Instead, circumstances leave her becoming a concubine.
She was not the problem.
His complete lack of courage was.
That entire situation irritated me more than she ever did.
No Breakup Nonsense
Once Jiang Xuening and Xie Wei actually become the couple, the drama does not turn into an exhausting cycle of dating, breaking up, reconciling, and breaking up again.
THANK YOU.
There is enough external drama already.
I did not need the romance manufacturing another crisis every five minutes.
The Ending
The main couple gets a clear happy ending.
Jiang Xuening and Xie Wei end up together.
The additional ending material shows them married and with children.
😊 HAPPY ENDING
No ambiguity.
No reincarnation guesswork.
No “maybe that shadow was him.”
They are together.
I approve. 😂
RELATIONSHIP MILESTONES
The World's Slowest Descent Into Xie Wei's Arms 😂: Relationship Timeline
Major spoilers ahead.
-
Episodes 1–29
Political Alliance, Suspicion & Obsession
For a very long time, Jiang Xuening and Xie Wei are not an official romantic couple.
Their relationship develops through political cooperation, suspicion, danger, emotional dependence, and Xie Wei becoming increasingly protective and possessive.
The chemistry is there long before the relationship is.
-
Episode 30
Secret Kiss
Xie Wei finally crosses the physical-romance line with a secret kiss.
After nearly thirty episodes of tension, the romance is finally starting to escape containment. 😂
-
Episode 32
Cave Kiss
During the dangerous cave sequence, Xie Wei's feelings and possessiveness become even harder to ignore.
The relationship is still complicated, but this is no longer merely political-partnership energy.
-
Episodes 33–35
Protection During the Northern Conflict
Xie Wei repeatedly protects Xuening during the escalating crisis.
Their emotional attachment becomes increasingly obvious.
-
Episode 36
Romance Finally Becomes Overt
Jealousy, emotional intensity, and another kiss push the romance fully into the open.
This is the payoff Reese had been waiting an eternity to reach.
-
Final Episodes
Choosing Each Other
Xuening and Xie Wei ultimately choose one another.
There is no repeated romantic breakup cycle once the romance finally comes together.
-
Married With Children
Additional Ending
The additional ending material confirms that Xuening and Xie Wei eventually have a real married life and children together.
After that absurdly long romantic wait, at least the drama confirms exactly where they end up.
Breakup / Separation Status
- Conventional breakup after becoming a couple: No major repeated breakup
- Long romantic wait: Absolutely
- Political/danger-related conflict: Yes
- Ending: Happy
- Final relationship status: Married with children
Final Thoughts
Story of Kunning Palace had a lot that worked for me:
- smart female lead
- strong acting
- interesting political story
- good chemistry
- a dark, devoted, completely unhinged male lead
- satisfying kisses once the drama finally remembers romance exists
- clear happy ending
My main issue is that the romance takes too long to fully develop and then does not get enough couple time afterward.
After waiting that long, I wanted the reward package.
More affection.
More kisses.
More couple scenes.
MORE.
Still, Xie Wei alone is worth discussing because Zhang Linghe apparently decided subtle emotional stability was not part of the assignment. 😂
A good historical drama with a smart heroine and one spectacularly unhinged man.
