Do not let the gorgeous costumes, dramatic fans, slow-motion entrances and Wang Xingyue looking expensive fool you. 😭
I completely understand why The Double has such high reviews.
Really. I do. 😂
This is one of those dramas where I can look at everybody praising it and say:
“Yes. That makes sense.”
And then still say:
“This is not really my kind of drama.”
Because I have a condition.
I need romance.
A LOT of romance.
💕💕💕💕💕
Not two people staring meaningfully at each other while spending thirty episodes investigating murders, exposing corrupt officials, avenging dead relatives, saving kingdoms and occasionally remembering:
“Oh yeah. We kind of like each other too.”
I need ROMANCE romance.
And The Double is first and foremost a revenge drama about a very smart woman systematically destroying people who absolutely deserve to have their lives destroyed.
For that?
👏 Excellent.
For feeding my romance addiction?
Ma'am.
I am starving.
🧠 Xue Fangfei Is the Reason to Watch This
Xue Fangfei is easily the biggest reason I would recommend this drama.
Her husband Shen Yurong betrays her, helps frame her, hits her with a shovel and buries her alive.
Which might be the most aggressive divorce proceeding I have ever witnessed.
💀
She somehow survives, meets the real Jiang Li, takes over Jiang Li's identity after her death and heads back to the capital with approximately seventeen revenge plans running simultaneously.
And she is SMART.
Not fake drama-smart where everyone keeps telling us how brilliant the heroine is while she spends half the show walking voluntarily into traps.
Fangfei actually observes people.
She plans.
She adapts.
She knows people's weaknesses.
She knows when she needs help.
She knows when someone is lying.
And sometimes she knows the best thing to do is stand there looking completely innocent while another person's entire scheme explodes around them.
This woman is doing algebra while half the cast is still looking for the crayons.
🧮😂
So if somebody asks me why they should watch The Double, my answer is very simple:
WATCH IT FOR XUE FANGFEI.
Watch her scheme.
Watch her get revenge.
Watch powerful people underestimate her and slowly realize they have made a terrible administrative error.
That is the good stuff.
👀 Apparently the Jiang Family Cannot Recognize Their Own Daughter
Now.
We have to talk about something that drove me INSANE.
The real Jiang Li was sent to Zhennü Hall when she was about eight years old.
She stayed there for roughly ten years.
That means she is supposed to be around eighteen when “Jiang Li” returns home.
And somehow her family accepts Xue Fangfei as their daughter.
A completely different human being.
I am sorry.
WHAT???
🤣🤣🤣
Yes, obviously people change between eight and eighteen.
I am not expecting her father to remember the exact shape of her nostrils from ten years ago.
But there is a difference between:
“Wow, our daughter grew up.”
and
“Interesting. Our daughter has apparently returned as an entirely different woman.”
Nobody noticed?!
Nobody?!
And Fangfei does not even look eighteen to me.
She looks noticeably older than the age she is supposed to be pretending to be.
That should maybe have been Clue Number Two.
🚨
The drama does try to explain it.
Jiang Li had been gone for ten years.
Her father barely knew her anymore.
Tong'er helps Fangfei learn personal details.
Fangfei has Jiang Li's belongings and information that an outsider should not know.
Fine.
I understand what the plot is trying to do.
I simply reject it.
This entire family apparently has the facial-recognition abilities of a potato.
🥔
Then later someone basically confirms:
“Yeah, I literally watched Jiang Li grow up and THIS IS NOT HER.”
THANK YOU.
FINALLY.
One person with functioning eyeballs.
👑 Princess Wanning Made Me Want to Argue With My Television
Princess Wanning annoyed me SO MUCH.
But I do want to separate two things.
What happened to her was genuinely horrific.
She was sent to Dai as a political hostage and suffered sexual violence, humiliation, imprisonment, repeated pregnancy loss and permanent physical damage.
Her own family and country essentially sacrificed her for political reasons.
That is awful.
I understand why she came back angry.
I understand why she felt abandoned.
I understand why she became bitter.
I understand where the rage came from.
But I do NOT agree with:
“Well, terrible things happened to me, therefore everybody now owes me whatever I want.”
Especially another woman's husband.
🙄
She behaves as if Shen Yurong is some kind of compensation package.
Like:
“I suffered, so I deserve this man.”
NO.
That is not how anything works.
Her trauma explains her.
It does not excuse her.
She manipulates people.
She threatens people.
She hurts innocent people.
She destroys lives.
And she walks around acting like wanting something badly enough means she deserves to have it.
Girl.
No.
😭
Her obsession with Shen Yurong becomes especially frustrating because she treats him less like a person and more like something she should receive as payment for everything she endured.
Ma'am.
Men are not trauma reimbursement vouchers.
I actually think Wanning is an effective villain because the drama gives her enough humanity for me to understand how she became this person.
I just absolutely cannot stand the person she chooses to become.
🪭 Xiao Heng, Please Report to the Romance Department
And then we have Xiao Heng.
I like Xiao Heng.
He is smart.
He is observant.
He is protective.
He realizes very early that something about “Jiang Li” is suspicious.
Instead of immediately exposing her, he watches her.
Which is VERY Xiao Heng.
Their early dynamic is basically two suspicious cats circling each other while deciding whether cooperation might benefit them.
🐈⬛🐈
And that part is fun.
The banter works.
The teamwork works.
The mutual respect works.
But here's where I seem to disagree with a LOT of viewers:
I did not really feel the romantic chemistry.
And a huge reason is simply the way they looked together to me.
Wu Jinyan looked noticeably older than Wang Xingyue on screen.
That is obviously just my visual reaction to the pairing, but I could not stop noticing it.
And once my brain noticed it...
My brain would NOT un-notice it.
😭
Instead of looking at them and thinking:
“OMG 😍”
I kept thinking:
“She looks so much older than him.”
And that really affected how much I bought them as this supposedly sizzling romantic couple.
Their character dynamic works for me.
Their partnership works.
Their trust works.
Their romantic chemistry?
Not really.
Which is probably why all those intense staring scenes did significantly less for me than they apparently did for everybody else.
💕 The Romance Is Also WAY Too Light for Me
Even if I had felt stronger chemistry, there still would not have been enough romance.
The drama kept giving me tiny romance appetizers when I had ordered the buffet.
Episode 17 gives us drunk Fangfei getting close to Xiao Heng, calling him handsome and trying to kiss him.
Excellent.
👏👏👏
MORE PLEASE.
Then suddenly:
Court case.
Revenge.
Murder investigation.
Political scheme.
Another villain.
Another revenge plot.
Another conspiracy.
HELLO?
XIAO HENG?
ARE YOU STILL THERE?
😂
The real romantic payoff does not arrive until around Episode 34.
There are 40 episodes.
Thirty-four!!!!
That is basically the end of the dynasty for somebody like me.
I like slow burn when the romance is constantly developing and feeding me something along the way.
But The Double is much more interested in Fangfei's revenge than in giving me a sweeping romance.
Which is fine.
That is what the drama wants to be.
It just is not what I personally watch dramas for.
🤝 Their Relationship Is Healthy — I Just Wanted More of It
I will give the drama credit here.
Fangfei and Xiao Heng have a pretty healthy relationship.
There is no ridiculous:
Date.
Break up.
Misunderstanding.
Reconcile.
Break up again.
Cry in the rain.
Reconcile.
Break up because somebody overheard half a conversation.
THANK GOD.
🙏
Xiao Heng respects Fangfei's intelligence.
He does not need her to suddenly become incompetent so he can save her.
She trusts him.
He trusts her.
They operate like partners.
And I really like that.
But again:
I wanted approximately 600% more romance.
I wanted more affection.
More kisses.
More physical closeness.
More relationship development.
More actual couple time.
MORE BOYFRIEND.
Instead, Fangfei's most committed relationship for most of the drama is honestly with revenge.
And she treats THAT relationship beautifully.
😂
⚔️ IMPORTANT: Episode 40 Is Vague — WATCH THE BONUS EPISODE
This part needs a warning too.
Fangfei and Xiao Heng eventually marry.
FINALLY.
🎉🎉🎉
WE MADE IT.
Romance!
Happiness!
Marriage!
Then the drama realizes viewers have experienced joy for approximately seven consecutive minutes and apparently decides:
“Absolutely not.”
Xiao Heng goes off to war.
WHY.
During the final battle, Wen Ji and Lu Ji die.
Xiao Heng is badly wounded.
And Episode 40 ends with Fangfei seeing an approaching figure in a very dreamy, symbolic-looking reunion.
It strongly suggests Xiao Heng came back.
But it does not plainly show:
“Here is Xiao Heng alive. Here they are continuing their married life.”
So yes:
Episode 40 by itself is vague.
And I do not appreciate this behavior.
😭
We spent forty episodes getting here.
JUST SHOW THE MAN COMING HOME.
Fortunately...
🎉 THE BONUS EPISODE CONFIRMS THE HAPPY ENDING
The bonus/special episode removes the ambiguity.
Xiao Heng is alive.
Fangfei is alive.
They are still married.
They are happily living together.
And years later they have a daughter.
So:
✅ YES — THE DOUBLE HAS A CONFIRMED HAPPY ENDING.
But I consider the bonus episode mandatory viewing if you need a clear HE.
Without it?
Episode 40 leaves enough room for unnecessary anxiety.
With it?
No ambiguity.
He survived.
They stayed together.
They have a family.
Everybody may leave my television safely.
😂
