The Immortal Ascension (2025) Review: Does Han Li Get a Happy Ending?

My Opening Thoughts

I finished The Immortal Ascension and gave it 3.5/5.

And apparently, Han Li wasn't the only one who disappeared through a teleportation formation, because my memory of the ending went right along with him. 😭😂

After revisiting the finale, one thing is clear: this is much more about cultivation, survival, and becoming stronger than it is about romance.

❤️ Quick Romance & Ending Answers

• Happy ending? Open Ending. Han Li survives, but his journey is unfinished.
• Main couple together? No.
• Breakup? No official breakup.
• Major separation? Yes. Han Li leaves Nangong Wan behind.
• Official relationship? Never established.
• First proper kiss? Not confidently verified.

👀 Should You Watch It?

Best for: Viewers who enjoy cultivation, fantasy battles, strategic heroes, and stories about personal growth.

Biggest strength: Han Li's survival-focused cultivation journey, supported by an elaborate fantasy world.

Biggest drawback: The romance never develops into a satisfying established relationship.

Verdict: Worth considering for the fantasy adventure, but not for viewers expecting a complete romantic love story.

What's The Immortal Ascension About?

Han Li (Yang Yang) is an ordinary young man from a poor village who enters the dangerous world of immortal cultivation.

He doesn't have extraordinary natural talent or powerful family connections. Instead, he relies on intelligence, careful planning, persistence, and whatever resources he can collect.

Along the way, he encounters rival cultivators, dangerous creatures, powerful sects, betrayals, and a growing conflict between righteous and demonic factions.

His ultimate goal is immortality, but surviving long enough to achieve it is an adventure of its own.

💕 What About Han Li and Nangong Wan?

Nangong Wan (Jin Chen) is a powerful cultivator whose path crosses Han Li's during his dangerous adventures.

Their relationship includes an intimate encounter, awkward feelings, reunions, and moments of concern for one another.

However, the drama never gives them an established romantic partnership.

Other women, including Mo Caihuan and Chen Qiaoqian, also develop feelings for Han Li. Those potential relationships remain unresolved or end in farewells.

The central focus remains Han Li's cultivation journey rather than his romantic future.

Does The Immortal Ascension Have a Happy Ending?

Ambiguous/Open. Han Li survives and reaches the Scattered Star Seas, but his journey is unfinished. He and Nangong Wan are not together at the finale.

Ending Classification: Ambiguous/Open Ending

Episode 30 concludes with Han Li successfully activating an ancient teleportation formation while escaping Wang Chan.

He arrives in the Scattered Star Seas, a new region where another chapter of his cultivation journey can begin.

Han Li is alive, and the immediate danger has passed. However, his larger story is not finished.

This is a positive ending for his survival and personal journey, but not a romantic happy ending.

Does Han Li End Up With Nangong Wan?

No. They are not together at the end of Episode 30.

After Han Li saves Nangong Wan, her cultivation technique accidentally drains his spiritual energy.

Embarrassed, Nangong Wan pretends to be her own relative, Nangong Ping.

Han Li doesn't recognize her true identity. He eventually leaves to continue his cultivation journey, and Nangong Wan remains behind.

There is no reconciliation, wedding, or romantic reunion in the finale.

Importantly, they do not formally break up. They never establish an official relationship in the first place.

Do They Break Up?

No formal breakup. Han Li and Nangong Wan never establish an official romantic relationship, so their separation is not a breakup of a committed partnership.

Final Rating: ⭐ 3.5/5

I finished The Immortal Ascension, but I had to revisit the ending to remember exactly where Han Li ended up.

It turns out that he survives, leaves Nangong Wan behind, and heads into a whole new chapter of his cultivation adventure.

Thirty episodes later, immortality is still a work in progress, and so is his love life. 😂
