The Married Secret-Identity Setup
On the surface, these two look like an ordinary married couple: a shopkeeper and a physician. In reality, both are hiding dangerous identities and leading very different lives from the ones they show each other.
So yes, this has historical Mr. & Mrs. Smith energy.
Marriage. Secrets. Two capable people trying to keep their other lives under control while being genuinely into each other.
Obviously I was interested. 👀
The hidden identities give the story suspense, but the marriage is what made the setup work for me. I believed the attraction. I believed they were a couple. Their relationship did not feel like something the synopsis promised and the drama forgot to show.
Chemistry and Romance
Hu Dandan and Yang Ze had excellent chemistry. Their scenes made me want to keep watching, and the attraction felt believable without either character losing the personality that made them interesting.
I liked that they felt like an actual married couple. There is a difference between telling me two characters love each other and making me believe it when they are together.
These two made me believe it.
But chemistry and physical affection are two separate things. I can love the way a couple looks at each other and still want them to do something about it.
Preferably kissing. 😂
Two Capable Leads
One of my favorite parts was that both spouses were competent.
The female lead could handle herself. She had her own dangerous life and her own abilities, which made the secret-identity setup much more entertaining.
The male lead was skilled and dangerous too, but his devotion to his wife was a major part of his appeal. I liked having a couple where both people brought something to the relationship.
They were interesting separately, and even better together.
Acting, Pacing, and Supporting Characters
The performances were strong, and I enjoyed the supporting characters too. The action kept things moving, the comedy landed, and the story stayed engaging.
For a short drama, that matters. I want it to use its limited time well, and this one gave me enough happening to keep my attention.
I did not feel like I was waiting through endless filler for the couple or the story to move forward.
Where Were My Kisses? 😂
The kisses were good.
There were not enough of them.
That is my complaint.
When the chemistry is this strong and the marriage this believable, I want more physical romance. More affection. More scenes of them simply enjoying being together.
The drama gave me a couple I wanted to spend time with, and then the short runtime limited how much of that relationship I actually got to see.
I wanted more depth as well. Not just another dangerous situation or another secret to manage. More time with the two of them as husband and wife.
All that chemistry was available. I would have appreciated a larger kissing budget. 😭
Production and Styling
The production looked inexpensive in places, and the styling and overall visual polish were weaker than I would have liked.
That did not stop me from enjoying the drama, but I noticed it. The performances and the main couple were stronger than some of the presentation around them.
The short format also left less room for the relationship to develop in the depth I wanted. I liked what was there. I just kept seeing places where a little more time could have made it better.
Ending and Relationship Conflict
I was happy with the ending. The main couple gets a clear and satisfying resolution.
The conflict made sense to me and did not drag on into the kind of exhausting prolonged breakup or separation arc that ruins my enjoyment of a romance.
External danger and secret identities create problems, but I do not automatically count every time a couple is apart as a romantic breakup.

Final Verdict
The Killer Is Also Romantic gave me excellent chemistry, a believable marriage, two capable leads, strong acting, enjoyable supporting characters, action, comedy, and a fast-moving story.
I loved the secretly dangerous married-couple setup. It was entertaining, and I genuinely liked watching these two together.
My complaints were the limited relationship depth, the inexpensive-looking production and styling, and the lack of enough physical affection to match all that chemistry.
Especially the kissing.
I have made my position clear. 😂
Final rating: 4.5/5.
Would I Rewatch?
No, probably not the whole drama.
I liked it a lot, but I wanted more relationship depth, more kissing, more physical affection, and stronger production and styling. Those things matter to me when deciding whether to return to a drama.
I am still glad I watched it. Loving a couple does not automatically mean I need to watch the whole story twice.
