The Maid: Quick Answers on Romance & Ending

Story events and my personal assessments are labeled separately.

STORY FACTS

Happy Ending, Romance Development & Separation

Does The Maid Have a Happy Ending?

Yes. Pei Ji returns after faking his death and reunites with Xiyan and Pei Zhao in Episode 26. The main couple and their son end together as a family.

Do They Break Up?

Yes. One major relationship-ending rupture around Episode 21 leads to separation, followed by the family reunion in Episode 26. The exact separation duration is not verified.

Secret child
Yes. Pei Zhao is Pei Ji and Xiyan / Shen Yuqing's son. The paternity storyline becomes central in Episode 20, but I found the father-son reveal and reaction unsatisfying.
When love is explicit
Episode 19, very late in a 26-episode drama.
Relationship status
They end as a family. The drama does not give me a clear on-screen dating, engagement, or legal marriage status.
Romantic payoff
Very late and disappointing for me. In Episode 25 they wish they could simply be an ordinary married couple in another life; Episode 26 brings the family reunion.
Major story complaint
Revenge, family conspiracies, and political plotting repeatedly push the romance into the background.

PERSONAL ASSESSMENTS

Chemistry, Kissing, Affection & Payoff

Romance amount
Low · Zhiyi romance score: 1.5/5
Chemistry
Moderate, with wasted potential.
Kissing / affection
Not enough romantic affection or skinship for me.
Protective / devoted ML
High. Pei Ji's protective side is one of the premise's strongest draws.
Family payoff
Mixed. The reunion is happy, but the secret-child emotional payoff did not land for me.

The secret-child trope is usually one of my favorites, which made the weak paternity payoff especially frustrating. These scores are my personal impressions, not objective ratings.

About these assessments

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

A QUICK CONTENT CHECK

Major Warnings for The Maid

Major relationship problems
The story hides identities and keeps the couple apart while revenge and family conspiracies take over.
Prolonged separation
Yes. There is a major emotional separation in Episode 21.
Hot/cold or push/pull romance
No repeated dating breakup cycle is described in my notes; the problem is the romance's limited screen time and late payoff.
Taboo or propriety issues
No major lead relationship taboo noted.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

My Review

This is my personal reaction to the drama. The rating is about its writing, pacing, romance balance, and emotional payoff—not the cast's acting.

Plot and pacing

On paper, The Maid should have been exactly my kind of drama. Revenge? Secret child? A powerful male lead? Scheming and family drama? A happy ending? Yes, yes, yes. Somehow they took all of that and still managed to make me angry.

At some point I felt like I needed a family tree, a conspiracy board, and several cups of coffee just to keep track of who was related to whom, who knew whose identity, and why half these people were doing what they were doing. 😂

Romance Progression and the Main Couple

My biggest problem was the romance. Where was it? I kept waiting for the relationship to actually become a major part of the story, and it just never gave me enough. By the time I was around Episode 23, I was basically asking why I had watched this many episodes when the romance was still giving me crumbs. 😭

The revenge plot completely swallowed the romance for me. I do not mind politics, revenge, conspiracies, or complicated family reveals when they support the love story. Here, it felt like the relationship was the side plot and everything else was the main event. That is the exact opposite of what I wanted.

The secret-child storyline

The secret-child storyline irritated me even more because that is usually one of my favorite tropes. I was waiting for the big emotional moment where Pei Ji clearly realizes that Pei Zhao is his biological son. That should have been one of the most satisfying scenes in the entire drama.

Instead, I finished the show still annoyed that I never got the explicit father-son reveal and reaction I wanted. How do you have a secret-child storyline and then fumble one of the most important payoffs? 🙄

The acting

The acting was superb, as expected. Zhao Xixi and Deng Kai sold the emotion, tension, fear, anger, devotion, and dramatic material extremely well. My problem was never the performances. The cast did their jobs. I just wish the writing had given them a much stronger romance to work with.

The actors deserved a better romance.

Happy Ending and Romantic Payoff

Yes, the drama technically gives us a happy ending. Pei Ji, Xiyan, and Pei Zhao eventually end up together as a family. Normally that kind of ending would save a lot for me. It did not save this.

I finished all 26 episodes, so nobody can tell me I did not give this drama a chance. I gave it every chance. I kept waiting for it to finally deliver the romance and emotional payoff that the premise promised me. It never did.

What worked

There were enough interesting ideas and excellent performances here to keep me watching until the end, which is why I am not giving it a 1. The cast is excellent, and the premise was excellent for me on paper.

What did not work

The writing, pacing, romance balance, and emotional payoff let me down. I do not want 20-something episodes of revenge, politics, family conspiracies, and people hiding things from each other just to get a little romantic payoff at the end.

This was one of those dramas where the ingredients sounded perfect for me and the execution somehow turned them into garbage. 😒

RELATIONSHIP MILESTONES

When Does the Romance Develop? Relationship Timeline

Spoilers ahead. The first episode establishes the secret-child storyline, not a romantic beginning.

  1. Episode 1

    The secret-child story begins

Shen Yuqing is forced to take her legitimate sister's place and sleep with Pei Ji. She becomes pregnant with Pei Zhao; her child is taken from her and she is later hunted. This is not a romantic beginning.

  2. Episode 6

Pei Ji connects Xiyan to their past

He begins connecting Xiyan to the woman from the night in their past.

  3. Episode 11

Status milestone, not a developed couple

Xiyan is positioned as the Regent's noble concubine. This is a status development, not the point when they become a genuinely developed romantic couple.

  4. Episodes 12–13

    Emotional connection and protection

Their emotional connection becomes clearer and Pei Ji's protective side becomes more prominent.

  5. Episodes 14–18

The plot overtakes the romance again

Revenge, family secrets, political danger, and conspiracy plotting dominate much of the story again.

  6. Episode 19

    Pei Ji's love becomes explicit

His love becomes explicit very late in a 26-episode drama.

  7. Episode 20

    Paternity storyline becomes central

The “whose child is he?” story moves to the center, but I found the father-son reveal and reaction unsatisfying.

  8. Episode 21

    Major emotional separation

There is one major relationship-ending rupture, followed by separation and eventual reunion. This is not a repeated breakup cycle.

  9. Episode 23

    Xiyan protects Pei Ji

A welcome mutual-protection moment arrives, but by this point the romance is already extremely late.

  10. Episode 25

Wish for an ordinary married life

They say that in another life they could simply be an ordinary married couple. Romantic, but very late in the story.

  11. Episode 26

    Happy family reunion

Pei Ji appears to die while protecting Xiyan and Pei Zhao. Xiyan leaves with their son; Pei Ji has actually faked his death, returns, and reunites with them. The main couple and their son end together as a family.

Breakup / Separation Status

  • Breakup: One Breakup
  • Separation: Long Separation, beginning around Episode 21
  • Repeated breakup cycle: No
  • Apparent death: Episode 26; he fakes his death and returns
  • Ending: The couple and their son reunite as a family

THE FINAL WORD

My Final Take: Is The Maid Worth Watching?

Who might like it
Viewers who enjoy revenge-heavy historical dramas, family conspiracies and political schemes, secret identities and dramatic reveals, and do not need romance to dominate the story. Fans of Zhao Xixi and Deng Kai may also enjoy the performances.
Who should skip it
Anyone watching primarily for romance, early couple development, lots of kissing and affection, or a satisfying romantic payoff before the final stretch. Viewers who tire of complicated family identities and palace intrigue may also want to skip it.
Main strengths
Excellent performances and an appealing premise on paper. Zhao Xixi and Deng Kai deliver the emotion and dramatic material well.
Main drawbacks
The romance stays small, the plot is difficult to track, the story has a major separation, and the secret-child payoff is weak.
My final verdict
This drama somehow gave me a revenge heroine, a powerful protective man, a secret child, and a happy family ending—and still forgot to give me enough romance.

The actors deserved a better romance.
