Should You Watch It?

If you enjoy historical romance with intelligent leads, arranged marriages, political maneuvering, and good chemistry, this one is worth considering.

Biggest strength: Chemistry between Liu Xueyi and Meng Ziyi.

Biggest drawback: The romantic commitment comes late, after considerable mistrust and separation.

This is more of a political romance than a consistently sweet relationship drama.

If you want a couple that gets together early and stays happily together, prepare for some frustration. 😂

My Review: Chemistry Makes a Difference! ❤️

Another historical drama, another political marriage, and another couple who apparently cannot communicate without plotting something first. 😂

The Princess's Gambit follows Jiang Taohua, a princess trying to survive a dangerous political situation while protecting her younger brother.

Her circumstances force her into the household of Shen Zaiye, a powerful chancellor with secrets of his own.

Their arrangement is hardly romantic at first. They're suspicious of each other, constantly calculating their next moves, and trying to figure out who can actually be trusted.

But eventually, political cooperation turns into something much more personal.

What stood out to me was the good chemistry between Liu Xueyi and Meng Ziyi. ❤️

The story gives them plenty of opportunities for confrontations, emotional tension, strategic cooperation, and romantic moments.

Their relationship develops against a complicated background of betrayals, poisoned alliances, and palace conspiracies.

The romance isn't straightforward, though. The drama repeatedly tests their trust, and it takes until fairly late in the story for them to fully acknowledge their feelings.

Does The Princess's Gambit Have a Happy Ending?

Yes — the ending is generally interpreted as happy, although the final reunion has some ambiguity.

Yes — the ending is generally interpreted as happy, although the final reunion has some ambiguity.

In Episode 36, Shen Zaiye sacrifices his own health to save Jiang Taohua from poisoning.

After sharing the limited antidote, he falls into a prolonged coma.

Taohua refuses to give up on him. She cares for him and waits for the Yinghuo flower to bloom.

Although the antidote eventually becomes available, Shen Zaiye does not immediately awaken.

In the final peach-blossom scene, Zaiye appears behind Taohua. They share an emotional embrace, fulfilling their promise to see the blossoms together.

The scene strongly suggests he eventually awakens and reunites with her.

However, the drama does not independently confirm his recovery before the reunion scene, leaving a small possibility of a dream interpretation.

Ending Classification: Happy Ending (implied).

Main Couple: Reunited in the final scene.

Does the Main Couple Break Up?

Attempted termination of their political marriage before an established romantic relationship; no confirmed breakup after Episode 31.

Their relationship is complicated long before they become openly committed romantic partners.

In Episode 18, Taohua requests a divorce after Shen Zaiye wrongly suspects her of attempted murder, orders her interrogated, and has her subjected to torture.

Their trust collapses.

She subsequently falls from a cliff, is presumed dead, and experiences memory loss.

Even after recovering her memories, Taohua tries to distance herself from Shen Zaiye because she believes staying together puts him in danger.

They finally acknowledge their mutual romantic commitment in Episode 31.

Breakup Classification: Attempted termination of their political marriage before an established romantic relationship; no confirmed breakup after Episode 31.

Separation Classification: Major and repeated separations, including presumed death and memory loss.

Do not classify arguments, presumed death, and forced separation as additional romantic breakups.
