THE ROMANCE CHECK

Quick Answers

Relationship spoilers below.

Does The Tower of Whispers Have a Happy or Sad Ending?

Yes. Lu Yingying dies in the main timeline, but the story continues into another life where Jun Che protects her, they reunite, and they choose each other again. The final romantic outcome is clearly happy.
Do Lu Yingying and Jun Che break up?
No. They have a conflict around Episodes 15–16 after Lu Yingying discovers Jun Che has hidden things from her, but they reconcile quickly. Their major later separation is caused by Lu Yingying's death, not a breakup.
When do Lu Yingying and Jun Che get together?
Jun Che confesses and they kiss in Episode 12. Their feelings are mutually confirmed in Episode 13, and they marry in Episode 17.
Is the romance good?
Yes. Their chemistry and emotional devotion are very strong. Jun Che becomes intensely protective and devoted to Lu Yingying, although I personally wanted more kissing.
How many episodes are there?
24 episodes.
Where can I watch The Tower of Whispers?
iQIYI.
Is The Tower of Whispers worth watching?
For me, yes. The rebirth and revenge plot is very cliché, but the fast pacing, strong chemistry, He Landou, Jun Che's character development, and satisfying romance made it a 5/5.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

MY OVERALL THOUGHTS

I loved The Tower of Whispers.

Is the plot cliché?

Absolutely.

We have rebirth, revenge, a traumatized and slightly unhinged male lead, a female lead trying to change her fate, palace schemes, hidden identities, poison, obsession, death, and another lifetime.

Have I seen variations of this story before?

Yes.

Did I care?

No. 😂

This was the good kind of cliché.

It was fast, addictive, romantic, dramatic, and exactly the kind of story that made me want to keep watching.

It also helped tremendously that He Landou is my girl.

I already liked her, and she was one of my favorite parts of this drama.

BUT FIRST… WHY IS THIS CALLED THE TOWER OF WHISPERS? 😂

I need someone to explain this English title to me.

Where is the tower?

And who exactly is whispering?

Because I watched all 24 episodes and somehow missed both of those things. 😂

The actual Chinese title is 三更雪, which is closer to something like Snow at the Third Watch or Midnight Snow.

The drama also had the alternate Chinese title 风满楼, which at least contains 楼 and gives us some connection to a building or tower.

So maybe that is where “Tower” came from.

But “Whispers”?

I have no idea.

There was no tower.

Nobody was whispering.

Yet somehow we ended up with The Tower of Whispers.

Okay then. 😂

THE STORY

Lu Yingying begins the story with one enormous advantage:

She already knows how badly everything can go.

In her previous life, her family was destroyed, she became the consort of the tyrannical Jun Che, and Jun Che ultimately killed her while she was protecting Yan Hui.

Then she gets another chance.

She wakes up before everything went wrong and decides she is going to change her family's fate.

And one of the people she blames most is Jun Che.

Except when she finds him in this lifetime, he isn't the powerful tyrant she remembers.

He's a slave.

So she buys him.

Initially, she wants revenge.

That part immediately interested me because I was expecting the usual rebirth story where the female lead spends half the drama plotting against the man who hurt her in the previous life.

But that isn't exactly what happens here.

REVENGE TURNS INTO UNDERSTANDING

This was one of my favorite things about the story.

Lu Yingying starts out wanting revenge against Jun Che because she remembers what he became and what he did to her.

But the more time she spends with this version of Jun Che, the more she begins to understand how the man from her previous life became that way.

Jun Che was honestly pretty unhinged at first. 😂

But instead of treating him like the monster she remembers, Lu Yingying starts treating him with kindness.

And that changes everything.

She begins to realize that there were reasons behind what happened to him and why he became the person she knew before.

So instead of continuing to punish him for something this version of him hasn't done yet, she gives him something he clearly hasn't received enough of:

genuine kindness.

And he basically pays kindness with kindness.

That simple change is what makes their relationship work for me.

She changes the way she treats him.

He changes the way he treats her.

And slowly, the man who could have become the tyrant from her first life becomes someone completely devoted to her.

JUN CHE: UNHINGED, BUT MAKE IT DEVOTED 😂

Jun Che had one of my favorite character arcs in the drama.

At first, he is intense, unstable, secretive, and definitely gives off:

“This man may become a serious problem later.”

Which, considering Lu Yingying's memories, is understandable. 😂

But once he falls for her?

That man is DONE.

His love becomes:

  • Intense
  • Protective
  • Obsessive
  • Loyal
  • Completely devoted

And somehow it works.

What made him interesting to me wasn't just that he became a devoted male lead.

It was watching how he got there.

Lu Yingying's kindness reaches him before he becomes the same person he was in their first life.

That is the real difference between the timelines.

She isn't magically fixing him with the power of romance.

She is interacting with him before years of trauma, manipulation, isolation, and violence completely shape him into the tyrant she remembers.

And once he experiences someone genuinely caring about him, he starts responding differently too.

His development was easily one of the best parts of the drama.

HE LANDOU AS LU YINGYING ❤️

Of course I loved He Landou.

That's my girl.

But even without my existing bias toward her, Lu Yingying is exactly the kind of rebirth female lead I like.

She is:

  • Smart
  • Capable
  • Decisive
  • Emotionally mature
  • Kind without being weak
  • Actually willing to learn from her first life

That last part is important.

Sometimes a rebirth drama gives a character a whole second chance at life and somehow they still make the exact same stupid decisions.

Lu Yingying does not do that.

She uses what she remembers.

But she is also willing to change her opinion when new information proves that what she believed isn't the whole story.

Her decision not to continue blindly seeking revenge against Jun Che is a perfect example.

She doesn't forget what happened.

She simply realizes that the situation is more complicated than she originally understood.

That made her feel much more emotionally mature than the typical revenge heroine.

And He Landou sold all of it.

THEIR CHEMISTRY ❤️‍🔥

He Landou and Deng Xiaoci had excellent chemistry.

I believed the attraction.

I believed the emotional connection.

I believed Jun Che's devotion.

And I believed that Lu Yingying could go from hating the tyrant she remembered to falling in love with the man standing in front of her now.

Their relationship grows naturally because they spend so much time fighting alongside each other and protecting each other.

The romance also becomes clear well before the finale, which I appreciated.

By Episode 12, Jun Che is confessing and they're kissing.

By Episode 13, their feelings are mutual.

And by Episode 17:

THEY'RE MARRIED.

Thank you.

No waiting until Episode 24 for somebody to finally admit they like each other. 😂

My only complaint?

I wanted more kissing.

The chemistry was absolutely there, but the physical romance could have given me a little more.

Still, the emotional devotion was strong enough that I didn't feel cheated by the romance.

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

However, this does NOT become a prolonged breakup.

    They continue working together.

    They reconcile quickly.

    Breakup count: ZERO.

  6. Episode 17

The story eventually gives them another lifetime.

This time, Jun Che changes the story.

  • Major separation: Caused by Lu Yingying’s death, not by either character ending the relationship.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

THE DEATH DIDN'T RUIN THE ENDING FOR ME

Normally, killing one half of my couple is a very dangerous game.

But here it worked because her death isn't the final ending.

Lu Yingying dies.

Jun Che grieves her.

He keeps his promise.

And then they get another chance.

That final lifetime changes how I feel about the tragedy because the story doesn't end with them permanently separated.

Instead, Jun Che gets to become her protector.

He saves the family she spent the entire previous lifetime trying to save.

And eventually, they find each other again.

That made the pain worth it.

Still…

I would have liked another wedding.

Just saying. 😂

THE PLOT IS CLICHÉ — AND THAT IS FINE

This drama isn't reinventing the rebirth/revenge genre.

It has pretty much every ingredient:

  • Rebirth
  • Revenge
  • Palace politics
  • An unstable prince
  • Secret identities
  • Scheming relatives
  • Poison
  • Obsession
  • Trauma
  • Sacrifice
  • Another lifetime

But sometimes execution matters more than originality.

The story moves FAST.

There is always another scheme, revelation, confrontation, romantic development, or plot twist coming.

At only 24 short episodes, it doesn't have enough time to sit around doing nothing.

And that worked perfectly for me.

I never needed this story to be groundbreaking.

I needed it to entertain me.

It did.

PALACE SCHEMING THAT ACTUALLY KEPT THINGS MOVING

I also liked the political and revenge parts.

Sometimes palace plots become the section of a romance drama where I start checking how much time is left in the episode.

That didn't happen much here.

The schemes actually connect directly to Lu Yingying changing her family's fate and Jun Che confronting the forces that shaped his original future.

So the palace drama feels connected to the main story rather than something happening while I wait for the couple to come back onscreen.

VISUALS

The drama also looked beautiful.

The costumes, sets, and cinematography worked really well for the story, especially considering this is a short-form historical drama.

Nothing about the production distracted me from the story.

And yes, He Landou looked beautiful.

Naturally. 😂

WHAT I LOVED

  • He Landou.
  • Lu Yingying actually learning from her first life.
  • Jun Che's character development.
  • Revenge turning into understanding.
  • His obsessive devotion.
  • Their chemistry.
  • No real breakup.
  • Marriage before the finale.
  • Fast pacing.
  • Palace schemes that stayed interesting.
  • The next-life reunion.
  • Jun Che becoming her secret protector.
  • The visuals.
  • The clear happy ending.

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER

Honestly, not much bothered me.

My main complaints:

  • I wanted more kissing.
  • The story is definitely cliché.
  • I wanted to actually see the proposal/wedding in their final lifetime.
  • And once again…

WHY IS IT CALLED THE TOWER OF WHISPERS? 😂

FINAL VERDICT

5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Tower of Whispers is one of those dramas where I can acknowledge that I've seen most of these tropes before and still say:

I loved it.

The plot is cliché, but it is the kind of cliché that works.

He Landou gave me exactly the kind of female lead I wanted: smart, capable, kind without being weak, and mature enough to realize that revenge wasn't necessarily the answer once she understood the truth.

And Jun Che went from completely unhinged to completely devoted.

Their relationship is what made the drama work for me.

She gave him kindness when she could have chosen revenge.

He returned that kindness with loyalty, protection, and eventually a love strong enough to follow her through another lifetime.

And after everything they went through, they found each other again.

No tower.

No whispers.

Still five stars. 😂
