A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

Yummy Yummy Yummy — Watch It for the Family, Not the Romance 🍜

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5

I really thought Yummy Yummy Yummy was going to be more of a romance when I started it, especially because I love both Wang Yinglu and Li Yunrui.

It really isn't.

This is much more of a family drama, and honestly, that ended up being the part I liked the most.

The entire Shen family gets thrown into the past together, so instead of the female lead having her own little time-travel adventure while everybody else disappears from the story, her family is right there causing chaos with her.

Their relationships, arguments, teamwork, and attempts to survive in a completely different time period are what made the drama fun for me.

If I were recommending this to someone, I would say:

Watch it for the family dynamics.

Not the romance.

I Love Both Leads ❤️

I want to make that clear because my problem was definitely not Wang Yinglu or Li Yunrui.

I like both of them.

Their characters are likable, they work well together, and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop.

The chemistry is there.

The romance is there.

But the romance never became the main reason I was watching.

The family did.

And for me, that is actually the most important thing to know before starting this drama.

If you go into Yummy Yummy Yummy expecting the main couple to dominate the story, you may end up wondering where your romance went.

If you go into it expecting a family comedy with romance mixed in, it works much better.

The Shen Family Is the Real Star 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

This is what kept me watching.

I liked seeing an entire modern family trying to survive in historical China instead of the usual setup where one person time travels alone and spends half the drama hiding who they are.

Here, everybody is confused together. 😂

They argue.

They interfere in each other's lives.

They embarrass each other.

They make plans together.

And when something actually matters, they act like a real family.

That dynamic gave the drama warmth.

Even when the story slowed down or wandered away from the romance, I still enjoyed watching the family interact.

Honestly, I think the drama would have been much weaker without them.

And Then Came the Ancestor Nonsense 🙄

This is where the story started testing my patience.

The drama gradually creates the idea that Lin Yan might somehow be connected to the Shen family's ancestry.

Eventually, that becomes a serious problem for the romance because Shaoguang believes that the man she has feelings for might actually be one of her ancestors.

And let me tell you:

I was so tired of hearing about this ancestor situation. 😂

The important part is that Shaoguang is not just being stupid.

The drama intentionally gives her and the family reasons to believe it.

The SHOW wants us to think there may actually be an ancestry problem.

So this is not:

“Why did this woman randomly decide her boyfriend is Grandpa?”

It is more like:

“Why did the writers create this giant fake ancestry problem just to torture the romance?”

Because there were already plenty of things happening in this drama.

I really did not need:

Historical romance, family survival, food business... and genealogy panic.

I Did Not Finish the Drama

This is important.

I did not finish all 32 episodes.

I liked the drama overall, but somewhere along the way I lost enough momentum that I stopped watching.

That does not mean I hated it.

A 4/5 is still a very good rating from me.

I love both leads, I enjoyed the family, and there were plenty of things about the drama that worked.

It just became one of those shows where I eventually realized I was not motivated enough to keep pressing “next episode.”

The length did not help.

Neither did the ancestor storyline.

And because this is such a food-centered drama, there is also a LOT of cooking and eating.

Anyone who knows me already knows that food-heavy plots are not exactly the easiest way to keep me invested. 😂

RELATIONSHIP MILESTONES

Relationship Timeline 💕

Did Not Finish. This timeline covers only the relationship progression I watched. Later revelations and the ending are separated below as spoiler research.

  1. Early Relationship

Shaoguang and Lin Yan gradually become interested in each other while the larger Shen-family story develops around them.

Their relationship grows naturally instead of immediately turning into a huge sweeping romance.

  2. Feelings Develop

The chemistry becomes more obvious as the story continues.

Lin Yan becomes increasingly protective and emotionally invested in Shaoguang, while she also clearly develops feelings for him.

  3. Romance Becomes More Serious

Their relationship progresses beyond simple attraction, but the drama continues balancing the romance with the family storyline.

This is why I never felt like Yummy Yummy Yummy was mainly a romance drama.

  4. The Ancestor Problem

Before I stopped watching, the possible ancestry connection had become a major obstacle.

Instead of just allowing the romance to move forward, the drama creates the possibility that Lin Yan might somehow be part of Shaoguang's family line.

That became one of the biggest things hurting my enjoyment of the romance.

Viewing Scope

This timeline ends at the ancestor obstacle, before I stopped watching. Exact episode numbers are not assigned.

RESEARCHED AFTER I STOPPED WATCHING

Spoiler Research After I Stopped ⚠️

Because I did not finish the drama, I looked up what eventually happened so I could accurately discuss the storyline without pretending I watched it myself.

And this is where the ancestor plot becomes even more ridiculous.

Lin Yan Is NOT Her Ancestor

The drama eventually reveals that the family was wrong.

Lin Yan is not Shaoguang's ancestor.

The actual ancestor is Pei Fei.

So the gigantic romantic obstacle the drama spent all that time building?

Wrong man.

😂

That does make the storyline make more sense in retrospect, because obviously the writers were intentionally setting up a twist.

But it does not make me like the storyline any more.

They still spent a huge amount of time making both the characters and the audience worry about an ancestry problem that was never real.

The Ending

Shaoguang and Lin Yan eventually marry.

However, circumstances later send the Shen family back to the modern world while Lin Yan remains in the historical timeline.

Historical Lin Yan lives the rest of his life carrying those memories.

The drama then gives Shaoguang a modern-day reunion with a version/counterpart of Lin Yan.

So I would describe the ending as bittersweet but hopeful, rather than the straightforward historical happy ending I usually prefer.

And honestly?

After researching that ending, I am not exactly furious that I stopped early. 😂

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

Final Thoughts

Yummy Yummy Yummy gets a 4/5 from me.

I did not finish it, but I still liked enough of what I watched to rate it highly.

I love both leads.

I liked their chemistry.

I enjoyed the romance.

But if somebody asked me what makes this drama worth watching, I would not say the love story first.

I would say:

Watch it for the family dynamics.

That is where the heart of the drama is.

Watching the Shen family get thrown into another era together, argue with each other, work together, adapt, and somehow turn all of that chaos into a new life was more memorable to me than the romance.

The romance is a bonus.

The family is the reason to stay.

And as for the huge:

“What if he's my ancestor?!”

problem?

After all that...

Wrong ancestor.

Thanks, drama. 😂
