MY HUSBAND IS HERE!!! 😭❤️😂
Liu Yuning as Ning Yuanzhou. That already had my attention, but A Journey to Love also gave me something I really love: actual wuxia.
Not “historical drama where somebody occasionally waves a sword around.” 😂
There are assassins, intelligence agencies, martial arts, ambushes, poisons, dangerous missions, political schemes, sword fights, explosions, and people getting launched through the air.
The action actually matters to the story instead of just being decoration.
And I LOVE that Ren Ruyi is genuinely dangerous.
She is not one of those female leads who gets introduced as this legendary powerful woman and then suddenly forgets how to function as soon as the male lead appears.
Ruyi is an elite former assassin.
She stays competent, strategic, ruthless when necessary, and fully capable of handling herself.
And Ning Yuanzhou can actually keep up with her.
That is one of the biggest reasons I liked them together.
They feel like two highly competent adults who happen to fall in love, instead of one person constantly dragging the other through the plot.
❤️ The Romance
Their beginning is hilarious because Ruyi basically looks at Ning Yuanzhou and decides that this man has acceptable genetics for her future child. 😂
Apparently romance now begins with reproductive planning.
She pursues him VERY directly at first, and what starts as her very practical baby plan eventually becomes an actual relationship.
Their feelings become genuinely mutual well before the finale, and once the romance settles in, they actually behave like two people who have chosen each other.
Thankfully, this is also not a repeated-breakup couple.
They have conflicts.
Around Episodes 19–21, they disagree about Li Tongguang and about what their future should look like.
There is emotional distance and frustration, but I would NOT call that a formal breakup.
They reconcile and choose to continue the relationship.
Later there is also a mission-related separation and a presumed-death scare involving Ruyi around Episodes 32–34.
Again: not a breakup.
She is believed dead during a dangerous mission.
They reunite.
That distinction matters because I am not giving this drama fake breakup points for situations that are actually mission or survival related.
💋 Chemistry
Ruyi and Yuanzhou have a mature dynamic that works because neither character has to become stupid for the romance to happen.
There are kisses, affection, jealousy, teasing, emotional intimacy, and a relationship that develops before the final stretch.
Their early romantic dynamic is especially funny because Ruyi is so ridiculously straightforward about wanting a child with him while Yuanzhou is basically trying to figure out what kind of woman has just invaded his life. 😂
But underneath all that chaos, the relationship gradually becomes sincere.
💍 THAT WEDDING…
Episode 37 gives us Ruyi and Ning Yuanzhou performing the traditional bows with Heaven and Earth as witnesses.
The drama treats them as husband and wife afterward.
Romantically?
Married. ❤️
Under my ridiculous SHOW ME THE PAPERWORK standard?
Ehhhh. 😂
No normal matchmaker process.
No marriage document that we see.
No nice little government registration scroll.
They basically conduct their own private traditional ceremony.
So yes, I accept that THEY consider themselves married.
But I am still standing outside the ancient civil registry asking where the 婚书 is. 😂
👑 Yang Ying
This is also where I first saw He Landou, playing Princess Yang Ying.
Yang Ying starts the journey inexperienced, frightened, and completely unprepared for what she is walking into.
But she gets some of the best character growth in the drama.
She is surrounded by assassins, warriors, politicians, and people with far more experience than she has, but she gradually learns how to survive in that world.
She does not stay the scared little princess everyone has to carry around forever.
And He Landou did a really good job making that growth believable.
❤️ HUSBAND REPORT: LIU YUNING
Do I even need to explain this one?
Tall. Deep voice. Historical robes. Competent. Protective. Strategist. Dangerous.
Hello, husband. 😂❤️
Ning Yuanzhou is also the kind of protective ML I prefer because his devotion does not require turning Ruyi into a weak character.
He respects what she can do.
He fights beside her.
He worries about her.
He protects her when necessary.
But he also understands that this woman was an elite assassin before he ever met her.
Trying to lock Ren Ruyi somewhere “for her own safety” would probably just result in her escaping and making him look stupid. 😂
😭 THE ENDING
And then China decided we were having too much fun.
NING YUANZHOU AND REN RUYI BOTH DIE.
This is NOT a Happy Ending.
Ning Yuanzhou stays behind during the final battle and is ultimately killed after being struck by numerous arrows.
Ruyi later infiltrates the Beipan camp and uses Yuan Lu's thunder-fire bomb to kill the enemy leadership.
She dies in the explosion.
The drama later explicitly treats Ruyi as dead and gives her a posthumous title.
Then comes the weird final scene.
More than ten years later, Chu Yue meets a boy named Ning Shisan who says he has a twin sister named Ren Lu.
His description of his parents sounds suspiciously like Ning Yuanzhou and Ren Ruyi.
Of course this caused years of people arguing about whether Ruyi and Yuanzhou somehow survived, whether the children are reincarnations, whether the scene is symbolic, or whether Chu Yue is imagining the future everyone should have had.
But the actual story immediately before that scene treats both leads as dead.
So I am NOT magically turning this into a Happy Ending because a mysterious child showed up for five minutes.
ENDING CLASSIFICATION: TRAGIC.
The final child scene is ambiguous consolation at best.
Ren Ruyi and Ning Yuanzhou do NOT unambiguously survive and live happily together.
China owes me damages. 😭
