About these assessments

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

My Review

I loved this one. ❤️

A Lucid Dream is one of those short dramas where I started watching it thinking I understood what was happening, and then the drama basically went, “LOL, no you don’t.” 😂

Zhang Yimeng believes she is a princess from an ancient kingdom and desperately wants to return to that life. Then she wakes up in what appears to be the historical world she remembers, with Song Jingcheng there too.

Except… things are definitely not as simple as they look. 👀

And that is what made this drama so fun.

The Plot Was Actually Clever

The whole setup involving Yimeng’s father, her psychiatrist, and this ridiculously elaborate attempt to help her was such a creative idea.

I especially loved the twist involving her dad. ❤️

The drama kept changing what I thought was real, what was staged, and what was actually happening. For something with only 18 short episodes, it packed in a surprising amount of story.

And then we got one of my favorite parts: seeing what was happening behind the scenes of the historical world. 😂

We would watch these people acting inside the “drama,” and then suddenly we would see them out of character behind the scenes like they were literally filming a show inside the show.

I LOVED THAT. 😂😂

It made the whole thing feel like we were watching a C-drama, inside another C-drama, inside another layer of reality.

My brain: What exactly am I watching??

Also my brain: KEEP GOING. 👀

Song Jingcheng ❤️

And obviously…

Cheng Yufeng.

This drama is the reason that man ended up in Husband Hall. 😂❤️

Song Jingcheng was exactly the kind of male lead I like: devoted.

Once he cared about Yimeng, you could feel it. He protected her, stayed beside her, and never turned into one of those annoying male leads who suddenly decides he needs to push the FL away “for her own good.” 🙄

Most importantly:

THERE IS NO BREAKUP. 🎉

No stupid relationship destruction.

No “I love you, therefore I must leave you.”

No random woman appears and suddenly everybody forgets how communication works.

They actually remain emotionally connected instead of spending half the drama making me angry.

THANK YOU. 😂

The Romance

The romance worked really well for me because Jingcheng’s feelings felt genuine and consistent.

He wasn’t hot-and-cold.

He wasn’t playing games.

He was just devoted to her. ❤️

And Cheng Yufeng and Wang Yajia had really cute chemistry together.

Considering how short this drama is, I also felt like the romance got enough attention instead of being shoved into the last five minutes like some short dramas love to do. 😭

The Dad Twist

The storyline with Yimeng’s father ended up being one of my favorite parts.

At first, some of his actions seem completely insane because the entire situation he creates is SO elaborate.

But once the drama starts revealing why everything was done and what is actually happening, it gives the story a lot more emotional weight.

I genuinely did not expect a tiny 18-episode short drama to have me sitting there trying to figure out which level of reality we were currently in. 😂

🔎 Reality Check — That Treatment Plan 😭

The drama presents Yimeng’s father and psychiatrist as creating an enormous staged historical environment as part of her psychological treatment.

Would mental-health treatment normally involve secretly constructing an entire immersive historical world filled with actors to reinforce someone’s belief before attempting to guide them back to reality?

Absolutely not. 😂

Real care for serious changes in reality perception calls for an individual evaluation and treatment plan. Depending on the situation, it may involve medication, psychotherapy and coordinated support. The National Institute of Mental Health describes these clinical approaches; it does not endorse the show's elaborate deception. This is a fictional plot, and I am not diagnosing Yimeng.

But as a fictional storytelling device?

I’ll allow the insanity because the concept was really creative. 😂

⭐ Final Thoughts

I just really enjoyed this drama. ❤️

It was romantic, funny, strange, emotional, and way more creative than I expected.

The show-within-a-show concept was probably my favorite thing about it. Watching scenes happen and then getting glimpses of the “actors” behind everything was hilarious and made the whole premise even better. 😂

The dad twist worked for me, the romance worked for me, the couple did not break up, and Song Jingcheng was devoted to Yimeng.

And Cheng Yufeng looked very good doing it.

Important scholarly observation. 👀😂

4.5/5 ⭐

Definitely one of my favorite short dramas. ❤️
