A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL
My Review
Okay, first of all:
THE COSTUMES. 😭❤️
That was probably the easiest thing for me to love about A Splendid Match.
The clothes, hair ornaments, layering, colors, wedding styling—everybody was walking around looking like they had somewhere extremely expensive to be. 😂
The drama takes place in fictional Da Yan, while its styling draws heavily from Ming-inspired clothing, hairstyles, accessories, and social aesthetics.
Visually? I was fed. ✨
Unfortunately, the story occasionally forgot that I also needed to stay awake. 😂
My biggest problem was that it got draggy.
There is a LOT happening:
family drama, inheritance problems, money problems, marriage negotiations, men orbiting Jinzhao, political factions, tax reform, corruption, succession drama, investigations, rebellion, kidnapping, court intrigue, and eventually border warfare.
Some of it was interesting.
Some of it had me thinking:
Are we still discussing this??? 😭😂
And then after taking its time for so much of the drama, the final stretch suddenly goes:
WE HAVE PLACES TO BE. MOVE. MOVE. MOVE. 😂
The last stretch piles on betrayals, poison, diplomatic danger, invasion, battlefield deaths, fake death, political maneuvering, kidnapping, and a burning residence.
So yes.
Beautiful to look at. Not always beautifully paced. 😂
👑 Gu Jinzhao
Jinzhao is not a passive historical FL. She deals with household and family politics, handles money and business issues, has clear opinions about marriage, values independence, and makes active decisions. She becomes directly involved in dangerous late-story events and goes looking for Chen Yanyun when he disappears.
She makes mistakes, but she has opinions, plans, money sense, and an actual spine.
Thank you. I needed that. 😂
❤️ Chen Yanyun & Gu Jinzhao
Their romance develops well before the finale. Episode 9 brings a major emotional shift after the drowning rescue, wound care, and whistle. In Episode 18, he asks whether she has considered marrying him, and she privately acknowledges liking him. Their first verified kiss is in Episode 21.
In Episode 24, he gives her a pre-signed 和离 / separation document.
“Please marry me. Here is your divorce paperwork in advance.” 😭😂
Sir.
That is either the least romantic proposal gift ever or weirdly one of the most romantic.
Possibly both. 😂
The formal proposal comes in Episode 25; Jinzhao confirms her feelings and intent to marry him in Episode 26. And the wedding?
Not Episode 40. Not five seconds before the credits. Episode 28. Bless these people. 😂
We get actual married-couple material. Episode 30 brings kidnapping and rescue. Episode 34 brings a serious marital conflict and the separation document, but they reconcile in that same episode. No completed breakup. No completed divorce.
The dangerous physical separation and reunion in Episodes 37–38, followed by strategic fake death in Episode 39, are separate from a romantic breakup.
Does A Splendid Match Have a Happy Ending?
YES. A Splendid Match / 良陈美锦 has a clear Happy Ending for the main couple.
Chen Yanyun’s late-story death is fake / strategic. He survives. Gu Jinzhao survives. By Episode 40, he returns, she survives the final confrontation, they leave together, and they remain husband and wife.
Alive. Married. Together. ✅
There is no completed final divorce, permanent romantic separation, reincarnation ending, ambiguous reunion, permanent death of either lead, or open-ended main romance.
The ending is happy but abrupt. It confirms the couple survives and remains together, but there is not a long domestic epilogue.
They’re alive. They’re married. They’re together. And then the drama basically goes, “Okay bye.” 🔥😂
No future children are established.
The supporting characters are another matter: Ye Xian dies in battle, and Chen Xuanqing dies after taking poison. The main couple’s happy ending does not erase those tragic outcomes.
Official Bonus / Extra
WeTV has an official bonus/Extra after the main 40 episodes, with additional romantic footage and bonus material. It is not needed to establish the main-series happy ending.

About these assessments
My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

🔎 Was Chen Yanyun’s Pre-Signed “Divorce Letter” Historically Plausible?
Surprisingly, the basic idea is plausible. 👀
The drama is set in fictional Da Yan but uses strongly Ming-inspired social and visual conventions.
Mutual-consent marital separation existed in imperial Chinese law, including Ming legal tradition, and written separation agreements could be used when both parties agreed.
So the drama’s pre-signed 和离书 is dramatized and extremely convenient, but the underlying idea of documented mutual-consent marital separation is historically plausible.
However, Ming marriage law was still deeply patriarchal. It was not the equivalent of modern equal no-fault divorce.
Historically plausible concept. Very romanticized execution. I will allow it. 😂
⭐ Final Rating: 3.5/5
I loved the costumes. ❤️
The styling and accessories were easily one of my favorite things about A Splendid Match, and visually the drama gave me plenty to look at.
But the story got draggy for me.
There is a lot of family scheming, marriage politics, court politics, corruption, and side-character drama packed into these 40 episodes, and somewhere along the way I started feeling the runtime.
Then the ending suddenly goes into overdrive and wraps everything up much faster than I expected.
The romance structure is actually pretty good:
the main couple gets together before the finale, kisses in Episode 21, formally commits, marries in Episode 28, stays married, survives the political chaos, and ends the drama together.
And that Episode 34 “divorce” scare?
NOT an actual completed divorce.
Thank goodness, because I was already preparing paperwork of my own. 😂
So for me:
GORGEOUS costumes + capable FL + established romance + actual married life + clear happy ending… but a story that tested my patience = 3.5/5. 🌸❤️
