Should You Watch Blood River?
My recommendation: Yes, especially if you love wuxia and martial arts choreography.
- Biggest strength: The choreographed fight scenes and action-focused storytelling.
- Best for: Wuxia fans who enjoy assassin organizations, martial arts rivalries, brotherhood, and political intrigue.
- Biggest drawback for romance viewers: Romance is secondary, physical affection is limited, and the main couple faces an extremely long separation.
- My verdict: I finished it, rated it 4/5, and the fights are what stood out to me most.
If you're expecting a romance-heavy drama with frequent kissing and couple moments, this probably isn't the best choice.
But if you want swords, assassins, and beautifully staged martial arts? Now we're talking. ⚔️
Does Blood River Have a Happy Ending?
Bittersweet Ending. Bai Hehuai survives, and she and Su Muyu reunite in the Episode 38 post-credits scene after 12 years apart. The reunion is hopeful, but the long separation and other losses matter.
Ending Classification: Bittersweet Ending.
The finale is emotionally complicated.
Su Muyu and Su Changhe survive the immediate conflict and continue forward together. Their attempt to free Dark River from political control has come at a terrible cost, including the loss of people close to them.
The central romantic tragedy involves Bai Hehuai.
She becomes severely poisoned, and Su Muyu is led to believe she has died. However, she survives and is concealed from him.
The painful part? They remain separated for 12 years. 😭
The Episode 38 post-credits scene finally shows Su Muyu and Bai Hehuai meeting again.
Their reunion provides hope, but the drama does not give them an extended on-screen romantic resolution or wedding.
So yes, the main couple gets to see each other again. But calling the entire ending simply happy would ignore a very significant separation and the other tragedies.
Do They Break Up?
No formal breakup is confirmed. An explicit dating milestone is also unverified. Their major separation lasts 12 years because Su Muyu is led to believe Bai Hehuai has died while her survival is concealed.
My Review: Apparently, I'm a Wuxia Girl Now 😂⚔️
Ever since I watched A Journey to Love, I've become a fan of wuxia dramas. There's just something about martial artists, sword fights, and all that jianghu chaos that keeps pulling me back.
And Blood River definitely delivered where I wanted it to!
THE FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHY! 🔥
That's what I particularly loved about this drama.
I'm talking about the actual choreography, not just characters standing around looking powerful while the special effects do all the work. Give me beautifully coordinated sword fights, martial arts movements, and action sequences that make me appreciate the work behind them!
And with a story about an entire organization of assassins, there's certainly no shortage of opportunities for people to start swinging weapons at each other. 😂
The martial arts were the biggest highlight for me and a major reason this drama earned its 4/5 rating.
What's Blood River About?
Blood River follows Su Muyu, an elite assassin and leader of the Spider-Shadow unit within Dark River, a feared underground organization controlled by three powerful families.
When the organization's leader is poisoned, rival factions begin fighting for control, pulling Su Muyu and his closest allies into a dangerous struggle involving assassins, betrayals, political manipulation, and the martial arts world.
But the story isn't just about who gets to control the organization.
It's also about whether people who have spent their lives killing for others can finally escape that darkness and choose their own futures.
And of course, since this is wuxia, they have to fight practically everyone along the way. ⚔️😂
The Fight Scenes Are the Real Attraction 🔥
This was easily my favorite part of Blood River.
I've developed an appreciation for wuxia choreography since watching A Journey to Love, and Blood River gave me more of the martial arts action I enjoy.
Su Muyu's umbrella-and-sword fighting style is one of the drama's distinctive action features, while the larger battles combine coordinated combat with stylized martial arts effects.
I appreciate when a wuxia drama actually makes its action sequences worth watching.
Sometimes I just want an excellent sword fight, okay? 😂
And this drama gave me plenty of reasons to keep watching.

Final Thoughts — 4/5 ⭐
Blood River reminded me why I started enjoying wuxia dramas after A Journey to Love.
I love a well-choreographed fight scene, and that is exactly what stood out to me here.
The romance is not the main attraction, and the ending comes with a major separation that romance fans should know about beforehand.
But as a wuxia drama, the action gave me something to appreciate throughout the series.
My final rating: 4/5. ⚔️❤️
Apparently, give me enough good sword fights and I'll happily spend another 38 episodes in the jianghu. 😂
