Okay, The Walking Dead with romance? 😂
That is basically Butterflied Lover. Instead of actual zombies, people infected by butterfly gu become violent butterfly slaves and attack other people. Meanwhile, in the middle of this historical outbreak, a devoted husband is desperately trying to protect and save his infected wife.
The absurd combination somehow works. 😂❤️🦋
❤️ Already Married, Already In Love
Ling Changfeng and Tang Qianyue have been married for about three years when the story begins. We do not have to wait until the finale for these two to admit they love each other. They already know. Thank you, drama. 😭
Then Qianyue's butterfly-slave condition turns their marriage into a rather dangerous situation. She can lose control, and the people around them see the infected as a threat. Changfeng's response is not to abandon her. He protects her, hides her when he needs to, and looks for a way to save her.
Qianyue sometimes thinks leaving him—or even dying—would be safer for him. There is a moment when she essentially gives him the chance to kill her because she fears what she might become. He kisses her instead.
THAT is the kind of devoted ML behavior I signed up for. 😭❤️
His attitude is basically: She is my wife. Nobody is taking her away from me. Not even her. 😂
🦋 Still Zombies to Me
Technically, butterfly slaves are not undead zombies. They are infected through butterfly gu/poison, and the infection can make them violent and cause them to lose control.
But we have attacks, blood, creepy changes, people biting other people, and an outbreak threatening the city. So, respectfully: still zombies to me. 😂
Historical C-drama The Walking Dead. But make it romantic. 🦋
The horror side is sometimes surprisingly intense for a drama that also wants me to swoon over the married couple. Somehow those two moods fit together better than they have any right to.
🔥 The Romance Actually Stays Important
Changfeng and Qianyue's marriage is the heart of this story. He is protective and devoted; she loves him enough to worry about what her condition could do to him. They keep choosing each other even when the gu plot makes that choice dangerous.
There is affection and kissing, and I did not feel as if the romance vanished the moment the fantasy mystery got busy. I am not claiming this is wall-to-wall skinship. What worked for me was their loyalty and the fact that I could believe they were already a couple.
There is no ordinary romantic breakup where they stop loving each other because of a dumb misunderstanding. The later time apart comes from Changfeng's treatment and the butterfly-gu plot. It lasts years in story time, but they remain emotionally committed. That is a forced separation, not them deciding their marriage is over.
🙄 That Ending, Though
The finale presents what looks like Changfeng returning to his family. I wanted to take that reunion, hug it, and call it a happy ending. But the last scene and its callback complicate whether everything we see should be read literally.
So I cannot honestly stamp this one confirmed Happy Ending. My classification is Ambiguous / Open. The reunion imagery is there, but the uncertainty is there too—and yes, I find that unnecessarily confusing. 🙄
⭐ Final Thoughts
This drama basically asked: What if we made a historical romance during a zombie outbreak? 😂
And apparently the answer is yes.
The ending is unnecessarily confusing 🙄, but everything before that gave me an established married couple, romance, kisses, creepy butterfly zombies, and a man refusing to give up on his wife even when she might literally bite him.
4/5. 🦋❤️😂
