About these assessments

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

My Review

Okay. My husband Cheng Yufeng is here. ❤️

Unfortunately, his CHARACTER is also here, and Yin Ji is a SUPER DUPER RED FLAG. 🚩🚩🚩😭

I know I like obsessive and slightly unhinged men in dramas, but sir… there is a LINE. Yin Ji didn't just step over it. He packed his bags, moved across it, and built a palace there. 😂

The Story

Xie Yun and Yin Ji were originally in love and even engaged, but she was forced to abandon him and marry Prince Qi in order to protect her family and Yin Ji.

Of course, she doesn't properly explain any of this.

Of course, Yin Ji believes she betrayed him.

And apparently the appropriate response to heartbreak is to hold a grudge for YEARS and make the woman you supposedly love absolutely miserable. 🙄

When they meet again after Yin Ji has gained power, Xie Yun ends up serving him while he alternates between clearly still loving her and treating her like absolute garbage.

Basically:

Yin Ji: “I love you.”

Also Yin Ji: “Anyway, let me psychologically torture you because I'm mad about something you did years ago that I don't actually understand.”

SIR. 😭🤦‍♀️

🚩 My Husband Was Kind of a Dick

Listen, I love Cheng Yufeng.

Yin Ji?

NO.

This man is jealous, possessive, vindictive, controlling, emotionally abusive and occasionally straight-up frightening.

He humiliates Xie Yun. He punishes her. There is forced physical contact, restraint, choking and sexual coercion.

Some of the early sexual content is absolutely not something I'm counting as cute romance just because the actors have chemistry.

That distinction matters.

Eventually we find out that Yin Ji has also been secretly protecting Xie Yun and her family in various ways, and he genuinely loves her.

But protecting somebody behind the scenes does not magically cancel out treating her horribly to her face.

You can be protective AND STILL BE A RED FLAG.

Congratulations, Yin Ji. 😂🚩

🔥 The Chemistry & Spice

Now THIS is where the drama knew exactly what it was doing.

It is super spicy. 🔥🔥🔥

There are kisses, bed scenes, bath scenes, biting, grabbing, jealous possessiveness, intense staring and enough sexual tension to power the entire city.

Cheng Yufeng and Xu Zhenzhen definitely have chemistry.

But again:

Spicy does not always equal romantic here.

Some scenes are mutually passionate later on, especially once their relationship improves.

Other early scenes are deliberately toxic and coercive.

So basically:

🔥 Chemistry: Very high 🔥 Sexual tension: VERY high 💋 Kissing/skinship: A lot 🚩 Healthy relationship skills: LOL

Xie Yun

I actually liked that Xie Yun wasn't just some helpless little flower waiting around for Yin Ji to decide her life.

She has her own goals, particularly clearing her family's name, and she doesn't immediately forgive everything just because Yin Ji looks hot while suffering. 😂

THANK YOU.

She also spends a substantial part of the drama trying to figure out who actually betrayed her family, which creates yet another huge misunderstanding between them.

Because apparently this couple was legally prohibited from having a normal conversation.

The Marriage Disaster 😭

Yin Ji eventually decides he wants Xie Yun to become his proper wife.

They actually get married around Episode 20.

And you would think:

“FINALLY. We survived.”

HAHAHAHA.

No.

During basically the same sequence, Xie Yun discovers evidence that makes her believe Yin Ji was responsible for destroying her family.

She turns on him.

He tries to explain.

There's a rebellion.

There's a FIRE.

Yin Ji gets seriously injured.

And everything goes completely to hell. 😂

This isn't really a traditional breakup where they calmly end their relationship.

They're already married.

It's more of a major relationship rupture followed by a forced separation caused by betrayal, misunderstanding, violence and the coup.

Thankfully, it doesn't drag through another twenty episodes because THERE ARE ONLY FOUR LEFT. 😭

Ending

HAPPY ENDING.

After all that nonsense, Yin Ji and Xie Yun finally work together against the actual villain instead of emotionally destroying each other. 😂

In the finale, Xie Yun is taken hostage.

Yin Ji is willing to surrender himself for her, but they ultimately work together to defeat the final threat.

Afterward, they remain together and the ending presents them continuing their lives as a couple.

So yes:

✅ Main couple survives ✅ Main couple reconciles ✅ Main couple stays married/together ✅ No tragic death ✅ No permanent separation ✅ No reincarnation nonsense ✅ No 300-year waiting period 😂 ✅ Clear Happy Ending

Final Thoughts

3/5.

I understand exactly why I watched this because my husband Cheng Yufeng is extremely attractive and the chemistry is HOT. 😂🔥

But Yin Ji was kind of a dick to Xie Yun.

Actually, scratch “kind of.”

He was a SUPER DUPER RED FLAG. 🚩🚩🚩

The chemistry and spice definitely carried a lot of this for me.

I also liked the conspiracy/revenge side of the story and watching the truth slowly come out.

But I cannot pretend his behavior toward Xie Yun wasn't awful just because he eventually becomes devoted and we learn that he secretly protected her.

Sir, you do not get to psychologically torture your girlfriend for years and then pull out the “but I loved you the whole time” card. 😭🤦‍♀️

Thankfully, once these two finally clear the mountain of stupid misunderstandings between them, they do become much sweeter, they work together, and we get a proper happy ending.

So:

Cheng Yufeng: Husband. ❤️ Yin Ji: Husband privileges temporarily REVOKED. 🚩 Chemistry: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Relationship health: Someone call HR. 😂

Final Rating: 3/5 ⭐⭐⭐

🔎 Reality Check — “But He Loves Her!”

This drama heavily romanticizes behavior that would qualify as intimate-partner abuse in real life.

Intimate-partner violence can include physical violence, sexual violence and psychological aggression.

Sexual activity without freely given consent is not romantic simply because the characters love each other, and humiliation, threats and controlling behavior do not become healthy because the male lead secretly protects the female lead.

So Yin Ji secretly protecting Xie Yun or eventually apologizing does not retroactively make the earlier choking, restraint, humiliation or sexual coercion romantic.

Drama logic: 🚩 + hot actor + tragic backstory = complicated romance.

Reality: Still abuse. 😭
