I have one very important question.
Just Spoil You? WHO DID HE ACTUALLY SPOIL?
Because I watched twenty episodes of this and I am still looking for the spoiling. 😂
Maybe Kele.
Actually, yes. Kele. The child was probably the most spoiled person in this entire drama.
For everybody else, this was less Just Spoil You and more Just Stress Me Out While Refusing to Communicate Like Normal Human Beings.
And the frustrating thing is that I should have liked this drama.
Secret child? Yes.
Former lovers reunited? Yes.
Protective rich male lead? Yes.
Cute little boy trying to reunite his parents? YES.
This is literally a pile of tropes that usually works on me.
Somehow they took all of that and still earned a 2/5.
The Premise
Zhong Ling returns to the city she left six years earlier with her son, Kele.
Kele has never known his father, but he recognizes Han Donglai because his mother has basically been drawing this man for years. Naturally, the tiny detective takes one look at Han Donglai and goes:
DAD.
And honestly?
The child figured this situation out faster than most of the adults.
Han Donglai is Zhong Ling's former fiancé. Six years earlier, their relationship fell apart after Lin Xiaxi interfered, Zhong Ling left him, and Han Donglai ended up seriously injured and using a wheelchair.
Now Zhong Ling is back.
Han Donglai still loves her.
She still loves him.
Kele desperately wants a father.
Han Donglai becomes attached to Kele almost immediately.
So naturally Zhong Ling does the most logical thing possible:
She tells nobody anything.
Ma'am.
PLEASE. 😭
Zhong Ling Made Me Want to Shake Her
My biggest problem with this drama is Zhong Ling.
I understand that she had her reasons for leaving. I understand that Lin Xiaxi manipulated the situation and that Zhong Ling thought she was protecting Han Donglai.
Fine.
Six years ago, I can give her some grace.
But once she comes back?
Girl.
USE YOUR WORDS.
Han Donglai clearly still has feelings for her. Kele is practically standing there wearing a flashing neon sign that says THIS IS YOUR SON, and Zhong Ling just keeps avoiding the truth.
She knows who the father is!
Tell him!
Even after they reconnect emotionally, she STILL doesn't tell Han Donglai that Kele is his son.
At that point I was officially done defending her.
And yes, Han Donglai had every right to be angry when he finally found out.
The original circumstances were complicated.
But SIX YEARS?
Then you come back into his life.
He bonds with his own son without knowing it.
He repeatedly tries to build a relationship with you.
You watch the two of them become attached to each other.
And you STILL don't tell him?
No.
Absolutely not.
When Han Donglai finally gets angry and points out that Zhong Ling has spent years making decisions supposedly "for him" without ever asking what HE wanted, I was sitting there like:
THANK YOU. SOMEBODY FINALLY SAID IT.
He lost six years with his child.
Kele also had a right to know who his father was.
You don't get to make that decision for everybody indefinitely because you think you know what is best.
The Paternity-Test Nonsense
And because Zhong Ling refuses to simply speak, we obviously need a paternity test.
Then Lin Xiaxi switches the results.
Of course she does.
Because apparently this drama had not tortured me enough yet. 🙄
So Han Donglai receives a false result and believes Kele is not his son.
Meanwhile I am staring at the screen thinking:
THIS ENTIRE PLOT COULD HAVE BEEN DESTROYED BY ONE SENTENCE FROM ZHONG LING.
One.
Sentence.
"Kele is your son."
There.
Drama over.
Everyone can go home.
And Then Han Donglai Just... STANDS UP
OH, THIS ONE.
I remembered this complaint immediately because it offended me on a spiritual level. 😂
Han Donglai has supposedly spent six years using a wheelchair after a serious injury.
Six years.
Then during an argument in Episode 12, somebody makes a remark about his disability and...
HE STANDS UP.
Sir???
EXCUSE ME???
The explanation is basically that he had recovered enough to walk and had been concealing it.
Which raises approximately seven thousand additional questions.
Where was the rehabilitation?
Where were the walking aids?
Where was the muscle weakness?
Where were the balance problems?
Where was the slow progression?
Where were the setbacks?
Where was ANYTHING?
You cannot show this man using a wheelchair for years and then reveal his walking ability like somebody finally finished installing the software update.
😭
REHABILITATION IS NOT A LOADING SCREEN.
I can accept ridiculous drama logic when it is fun.
Throw somebody off a cliff and have them return three years later with a new face and martial arts powers. Fine. Entertain me.
But this was not entertaining nonsense.
This was medical miracle by screenplay convenience.
The writers basically went:
Wheelchair arc complete.
Click here to enable walking. ✅
Absolutely not.
Han Donglai Was Actually One of the Better Parts
For all my complaining, I actually understood Han Donglai much more than Zhong Ling.
Was he jealous?
Yes.
Petty?
Definitely.
Did he occasionally behave like an overgrown territorial peacock around Chu Mo?
Absolutely. 😂
But he also consistently showed that he cared about Zhong Ling and Kele.
He protects them when Zhong Ling loses her housing.
He becomes attached to Kele long before knowing Kele is biologically his.
He publicly rejects Lin Xiaxi.
He repeatedly tries to reconnect with Zhong Ling.
And even before he knows Kele is his son, he makes it clear that Kele's biological father doesn't change the way he feels about Zhong Ling and the child.
THAT was the version of Han Donglai I wanted more of.
That's devotion.
That's family.
That's where the title Just Spoil You could have actually gone somewhere.
Instead, the drama was too busy with switched paternity tests, evil schemes, jealousy, secrets, and Zhong Ling refusing to speak.
Kele Was Doing Everybody's Job
Kele deserves compensation.
This child spent half the drama trying to get his own parents together.
He recognizes Han Donglai.
He wants Han Donglai as his father.
He creates opportunities for his parents to be together.
He tries to push them toward becoming a family.
Honestly, without Kele, Zhong Ling and Han Donglai probably would still be standing across the room from each other making sad eye contact instead of having a conversation.
Promote Kele to screenwriter. 😂
The Romance
There are definitely romantic moments.
The chemistry between Wang Haoxuan and Song Meina wasn't terrible, and when Han Donglai and Zhong Ling stopped fighting the obvious, I could see why they had loved each other.
Their later reconciliation and kissing scenes were probably some of their better moments.
Then Episode 18 finally gives us more intimacy and the feeling that these people might actually behave like a couple.
Unfortunately...
Episode 18 of 20.
Why are we finally getting somewhere when the drama is basically packing its bags?
I wanted more of them functioning as a couple.
More family scenes with Kele.
More Han Donglai actually "spoiling" Zhong Ling.
More affection.
More payoff.
You have a secret-child reunion romance sitting RIGHT THERE.
Use it!
⭐ Final Thoughts
Just Spoil You had almost everything necessary to become one of my guilty pleasures.
Secret child.
Second-chance romance.
Protective male lead.
Jealousy.
Scheming villain.
Cute family moments.
Happy ending.
These are MY THINGS.
But the execution annoyed me too much.
Zhong Ling withholding Kele's identity for so long made increasingly less sense, especially after she and Han Donglai were already reconnecting.
Han Donglai's anger after finding out was one of the few reactions that felt completely justified.
And I will never forget this drama expecting me to casually accept a man using a wheelchair for years and then suddenly standing up like somebody selected:
Enable Legs
in Settings.
No rehabilitation arc.
No gradual recovery.
Nothing.
Just:
🧑🦽
argument happens
🧍
MAGNIFICENT. 😂
In the end, I actually liked Han Donglai more than I expected.
I liked Kele.
I liked the basic idea of this little family.
I just wish the writers had trusted that idea enough to let the family actually BE a family instead of constantly manufacturing problems around them.
And for a drama called Just Spoil You, I needed significantly more spoiling.
Final Rating: 2/5 ★★☆☆☆
Cute child.
Decent male lead.
Happy ending.
Female lead desperately needed a communication seminar.
And the medical department owes me an apology.
