Love Between Fairy and Devil is one of those dramas where apparently everyone else was having the spiritual experience of their lives, while I was sitting there like:
“Yeah. This is fine.” 😂
And I actually watched all 36 episodes, so nobody can accuse me of not giving it a chance.
The story follows Xiao Lanhua, a sweet little orchid fairy who accidentally releases Dongfang Qingcang, the terrifying Moon Supreme who has been imprisoned for thousands of years. Through the One Heart Curse, the two become magically connected, which means hurting Xiao Lanhua can also affect him.
There are body swaps, political conflicts between the Moon and Immortal tribes, hidden identities, a second male lead, mortal-realm adventures, ancient evil, reincarnation, sacrifices…
Basically the entire xianxia starter pack. 😂
And objectively?
The production is good.
The fantasy world looks expensive, the costumes are beautiful, the visual effects are memorable, the soundtrack works, and the supporting cast is strong.
I also understand why the drama became so popular.
The central romance has a setup that normally works very well for me:
Powerful emotionally unavailable man gets completely wrecked by love and becomes ridiculously protective of one woman.
That should have been my catnip.
And somehow…it wasn't. 😂
Xiao Lanhua Tested My Patience
My biggest problem was Xiao Lanhua.
I know the extremely cute, innocent personality and high-pitched delivery were intentional parts of the character.
I appreciate the acting choice.
It still annoyed me.
That overly cutesy voice and childlike behavior wore on me, especially early in the drama.
Xiao Lanhua definitely grows stronger and more mature as the story progresses, and I liked her considerably more later, but I spent enough time being irritated by her that it affected how emotionally attached I became to the romance.
And when the entire drama revolves around one couple, being mildly aggravated by half of that couple is…not ideal. 😂
And Then There Is Dylan Wang…
Before anybody comes after me:
Dylan Wang performed the role well.
There. I said it. 🤣
Dongfang Qingcang has a genuine character arc.
He begins as this terrifying man who has essentially had his emotions removed and slowly starts experiencing jealousy, fear, compassion, and love because of Xiao Lanhua.
The body-swap scenes also required Dylan Wang to act completely differently from his normal cold Moon Supreme persona.
That part was legitimately well done.
I am simply not a Dylan Wang girl.
I don't know what else to tell everybody. 😂
He can stand there in black robes looking powerful while half the internet passes out, and apparently my body has chosen immunity.
This is not an acting complaint.
It is a me complaint.
The Romance
The romance itself is actually one of the drama's strongest areas.
Dongfang Qingcang goes from wanting to use Xiao Lanhua to becoming completely devoted to her.
Protecting her initially begins because their lives are magically connected, but eventually he is protecting her simply because he loves her.
And THAT part I liked.
He repeatedly chooses her over power, revenge, and even his own survival.
There is jealousy, protectiveness, sacrifice, physical affection, kissing, and actual romantic development.
So on paper?
This man is exactly the type of walking red flag turned devoted husband candidate I usually collect.
Unfortunately, Husband Hall security has reviewed the application and Dylan Wang's badge still isn't printing. 🤣
The Plot Gets Very Xianxia
The later episodes lean heavily into the usual xianxia ingredients:
Xiao Lanhua's true identity, destiny, sacrifice, resurrection, ancient evil, and the inevitable question of which member of the couple is going to die dramatically for the other one this week.
Xiao Lanhua eventually sacrifices herself.
Later, Dongfang Qingcang sacrifices himself while defeating Tai Sui.
At that point I remember being less emotionally destroyed than the drama clearly expected me to be.
Probably because by then I had watched enough xianxia to know:
Nobody is staying dead until I see the credits roll.
The Ending — SPOILERS
Thankfully, this does have a real Happy Ending.
After Dongfang Qingcang sacrifices himself, Xiao Lanhua continues waiting for him.
For 500 years.
Because apparently xianxia couples cannot just wait six months like normal people.
Eventually Dongfang Qingcang returns, appears in front of her, and they reunite with a kiss.
So yes:
Alive. Together. Kiss. Happy Ending.
My complaint is that after making Xiao Lanhua wait FIVE HUNDRED YEARS, the drama could have given me a little more than basically:
"Hi, I'm back."
Kiss.
THE END.
Sir.
You were gone for five centuries.
Sit down.
We have paperwork. 😂
Acting & Production
This is also why I can't rate the drama badly.
The cast is genuinely solid.
Even though Esther's characterization irritated me and Dylan Wang isn't personally my type, neither of them gave a bad performance.
The supporting actors were good too, and the drama put real effort into its world-building, costumes, visual effects, and overall atmosphere.
There is a reason this became such a beloved xianxia.
It just never became my beloved xianxia.
Final Thoughts
Love Between Fairy and Devil is a good drama that I personally felt pretty “whatever” about.
I understand the praise.
I understand why people love Dongfang Qingcang.
I understand why the couple became so popular.
I understand why people cried.
I was simply…not emotionally enrolled in the same program. 😂
The production is strong, the acting is good, the romance has real development, Dongfang Qingcang becomes extremely devoted, and the story delivers a genuine Happy Ending.
But Xiao Lanhua irritated me, Dylan Wang did absolutely nothing to activate my Husband Hall alarm system, and despite watching the entire thing, very little of the story actually stayed with me afterward.
And considering how many C-dramas I watch, “I finished all 36 episodes and then forgot most of it” is probably the most accurate description of my relationship with this drama.
It was good.
I watched it.
Everybody survived.
Moving on. 😂
⭐ Final Rating: 3.5/5
What worked: Beautiful production, strong cast, devoted ML, good character growth, body-swap comedy, developed romance, Happy Ending.
What didn't: Xiao Lanhua's cutesiness annoyed me, I never became emotionally obsessed with the couple, the late xianxia sacrifice cycle felt familiar, and despite appreciating Dylan Wang's performance…
I am still not joining the Dylan Wang fan club. 🤣
