A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL
🌸 My Review
There. I said it: complete nonsense. 😭😂
Love Beyond the Grave had basically every ingredient that should have worked on me: a ridiculously powerful supernatural FL, a clever and devoted general, enemies-to-“why are you touching me like that?” energy, a magical five-senses bond, Arthur Chen in historical clothing, and Dilraba looking like she owns the entire spirit realm.
And somehow we ended up with 40 episodes of ghost politics, war politics, secret identities, revenge, magical rules, sacrificial rules, sensory-exchange rules, people dying, people becoming spirits, people swallowing magical objects, and the plot continuously inventing new problems because apparently peace was illegal. 😂
My husband Arthur could only do so much.

👻 The Plot
He Simu is the 400-year-old ruler of Guixu, basically the boss of the spirit world. She is immensely powerful but lacks normal human senses. Duan Xu is a young mortal general carrying plenty of secrets of his own.
The two realize they can exchange senses through a supernatural bond, giving He Simu the chance to experience things like touch, taste, color, and smell while Duan Xu temporarily loses whatever sense he gives her. Their initial mutual suspicion turns into fascination and eventually love.
That concept? Cute. Interesting. I was listening.
Then the drama looked at its perfectly good supernatural romance and said, “You know what this needs? EVERYTHING.” 😭
We get wars, royal schemes, spirit-world coups, assassination plots, revenge stories, multiple identities, old grudges, obsessive ghosts, magical artifacts, curses, sacrifices, tragic side characters…
At a certain point I was no longer asking what happens next?
I was asking WHY IS ANY OF THIS HAPPENING? 😂
❤️ He Simu & Duan Xu
The main couple is easily the strongest part of the drama.
He Simu is not some helpless little flower waiting for a man to rescue her. She is the Ghost King. She is enormously powerful, capable of making extremely ruthless decisions, and Duan Xu knows perfectly well that she could probably fold him into a decorative napkin if she wanted to.
Duan Xu, meanwhile, is a clever little fox. He schemes, manipulates situations, takes risks, and keeps finding ways to stay near her.
And most importantly: he falls HARD.
Their five-senses connection gives the romance a built-in intimacy because every time she experiences something through him, he is literally giving part of his human experience to her.
The problem is that the drama keeps dragging them through increasingly complicated supernatural nonsense instead of just letting this relationship breathe.
🔥 Chemistry, Kissing & Skinship
The chemistry is strong, especially once Duan Xu stops pretending that his interest in He Simu is purely strategic.
And thankfully, this is not forty episodes of forehead staring.
Duan Xu actually steals their first kiss around Episode 13 while He Simu is asleep. That scene absolutely needs the consent asterisk because she cannot consent while sleeping.
There are later kisses with much stronger mutual romantic energy, including a painful farewell-style kiss during their earlier emotional rupture and the major Episode 30 mutual kiss, when He Simu finally agrees to be with him.
Episode 30 is the real romantic payoff: they openly choose each other and kiss passionately after he transfers touch to her so she can actually feel it.
So yes: Arthur was put to work. 😂
🙄 The “Breakup” That Isn’t Quite a Breakup
This one needs proper classification.
Around Episodes 22–23, He Simu becomes terrified of loving a mortal who will eventually die. She removes part of Duan Xu’s memories, takes him to see the graves of her 22 previous mortal lovers, and essentially tells him that someday she will forget him too and he should go live a normal human life.
He then leaves Guixu.
Emotionally? Absolutely a separation/rejection arc.
Technically? Not an actual breakup under our rules, because they had not yet officially established themselves as a couple.
They reconnect in the human world, Duan Xu continues pursuing her, and they finally become explicitly official in Episode 30.
Once they are officially together, there is no formal romantic breakup.
Thank heaven for one thing.
😑 That Ending
Oh, this drama had AUDACITY.
The actual Episode 40 ending has He Simu and Duan Xu finally getting married. Duan Xu gives her all five of his senses so she can fully experience their wedding and the human world.
Beautiful.
Romantic.
Also apparently fatal because happiness cannot simply exist. 🙄
His body deteriorates rapidly. They spend sunrise together as newlyweds, he starts coughing up blood, and Duan Xu dies in He Simu’s arms basically the day after they get married.
His physical body does not revive in the regular Episode 40 ending; what remains with her is his spiritual essence.
Main drama ending classification: Tragic Ending
Yes, his spirit stays near her, so there is a little supernatural hope attached to it.
But the man is physically dead.
I am not calling that a normal happy ending just because a glowing spiritual jellyfish version of my husband follows her around. 😂
Then the production released an official alternate HE special in which fate gets rewritten: He Simu gives up her supernatural existence, becomes mortal, Duan Xu is restored, and the two reunite to live a human life together.
Alternate special ending classification: Happy Ending
So essentially:
Episode 40: “Here is pain.” Special: “Fine. Stop yelling. Here is your husband back.” 😭
💗 Shen Zhiyi’s Drama Reality Check
Finished · 40 main episodes + alternate-ending special. Full spoilers below.
- 💕 Romance
- Strong: The central relationship matters throughout the story, although the plot frequently wanders into supernatural and political chaos.
- 🔥 Chemistry
- Strong: Dilraba and Arthur Chen sell the attraction, teasing, devotion, and later emotional intensity.
- 💋 Kissing
- Moderate to Strong: Several meaningful kisses, including an early stolen kiss, a farewell-style kiss, and a genuinely passionate mutual kiss around Episode 30.
- 🤗 Skinship
- Moderate: Touch, embraces, hand-holding, caretaking, sensory exploration, physical closeness, and protective contact are recurring parts of their relationship.
- 🌶️ Spiciness / Adult Intimacy
- Mild to Moderate: More sensual than explicit. The drama plays with touch and physical desire, and their intimacy progresses noticeably around Episodes 29–30, but this is still a mainstream costume drama rather than anything graphic.
- 🚩 ML Red Flag
- Low to Moderate: Duan Xu is manipulative and scheming in a fun “little fox” way, but generally devoted and protective. Biggest issue: he kisses her while she’s asleep, which is a consent violation.
- 👑 Female Lead Competence
- Very High: He Simu is literally the powerful ruler of the spirit realm. She fights, strategizes, governs, protects people, and is very much not a damsel.
- ⏱️ Romance Timing
- Medium / Slowish: Attraction builds much earlier, but the relationship does not become explicitly official until Episode 30 of 40.
- ❤️🔥 Relationship Payoff
- Mixed: We get official dating, passionate kissing, devotion, and marriage—but then the main ending kills Duan Xu almost immediately after the wedding. The alternate special repairs the damage.
- 💔 Breakup
- None after becoming official: The Episodes 22–23 rejection is pre-relationship, so classify it as an emotional rupture/separation rather than a formal breakup.
- ⏳ Separation / Conflict
- Moderate: There is a meaningful pre-relationship separation plus later duty/war/geographic separation, captivity, and life-threatening conflict. Not repeated romantic breakups.
- 💍 Final Relationship Status
- Main ending: Married, but Duan Xu physically dies and remains as spiritual essence. Alternate special: Reunited alive as mortals and together.
- 📖 Plot
- Complete nonsense. 😂 Interesting concepts buried under an increasingly overcrowded pile of supernatural rules, war, conspiracies, revenge, sacrifices, magical artifacts, identity drama, and people refusing to stay alive.
- 🐾 Animal Harm
- Minor / limited: A frightened horse charges toward people but is stopped. Small living creatures brought into Guixu have difficulty surviving there; a rabbit is later sustained using spiritual power. No specific verified dog or cat harm identified.
About these assessments
My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

⭐ Final Rating: 3/5
I should have loved this.
Powerful FL? ✅ Devoted clever ML? ✅ Arthur Chen? HUSBAND. ✅ Fantasy romance? ✅ Kissing? ✅ Marriage? ✅
And somehow my final reaction was still:
What the hell did I just watch? 😭😂
The romance itself has good material, He Simu and Duan Xu have a relationship worth rooting for, and the five-senses concept is genuinely creative.
But the story keeps piling nonsense on top of nonsense until the emotional core is buried underneath approximately four governments, seventeen magical laws, twelve sacrifices, a war, a spirit rebellion, twenty-two dead ex-boyfriends, and whatever fresh foolishness the writers found behind the couch that morning.
Then after making me survive all 40 episodes, they marry my husband and kill him the next day, only to hand me an alternate special like:
✨ JK, here is the happy ending. ✨
3/5. Complete nonsense. I finished it anyway. 😂
