I loved this one. ❤️
First of all:
MY HUSBAND IS HERE.
So obviously this drama already had an unfair advantage. 😂 Hou Minghao as Ji Bozai running around looking gorgeous, scheming, fighting, flirting, suffering beautifully, and eventually becoming completely gone for one woman?
Yes. Thank you. I am seated. 🔥
The basic setup is actually really fun. Ming Yi spent years secretly competing as the male Crown Prince Ming Xian and basically dominating the Qingyun Tournament until Ji Bozai finally defeats her.
Except she was poisoned, her spiritual veins were failing, and she believes Ji Bozai may have the cure she needs.
So what does she do?
Naturally, she disguises herself again and gets close to the suspiciously attractive man who just ruined her winning streak. 😂
And Ji Bozai is not stupid either.
That means we get two smart people lying to each other, investigating each other, flirting with each other, and slowly falling in love while both pretending they are absolutely NOT doing that. 👀❤️
This is exactly the kind of nonsense I enjoy.
❤️ Ji Bozai & Ming Yi
Their chemistry is GOOD.
Not the background music says they're in love while they stare at each other from six feet away chemistry.
Actual tension.
Actual flirting.
Actual attraction.
And most importantly:
ACTUAL KISSING. 😂🔥
Their relationship has plenty of secrets and trust issues because both of these people showed up carrying enough hidden identities and personal agendas to fill an entire suitcase, but the attraction between them never feels fake.
By the time they genuinely fall for each other, I bought it.
And the drama actually lets the relationship progress instead of making me wait until Episode 36 for one dry little kiss and a distant smile.
Blessings upon this production. 😂
👑 Ji Bozai
Ji Bozai is exactly the kind of male lead I enjoy.
He is clever, powerful, suspicious, damaged, occasionally ridiculous, and eventually completely devoted to Ming Yi.
Even when the plot gets messy, his feelings for her are not subtle.
This man will put himself in danger for her, protect her, worry about her, and make terrible noble-idiot decisions because apparently sacrificing yourself without properly consulting your girlfriend is a required course at C-drama Male Lead University. 🙄😂
But I love his devotion.
And Hou Minghao looks ridiculously good doing all of this, which is obviously important scholarly information.
My husband performed his duties. ❤️🔥
⚔️ Ming Yi
I also liked that Ming Yi is not a helpless decorative fairy.
She is powerful.
She is intelligent.
She can fight.
She investigates things herself.
She has her own goals.
And she protects Ji Bozai too.
Their relationship works best when they are operating as partners because neither one of them is just standing around waiting for the other person to save them.
I love a couple where both people are capable.
Please give me more of this and fewer female leads tripping over flat ground so the male lead can catch them. 😂
🔥 Chemistry, Kissing & Skinship
The chemistry is one of the strongest parts of this drama.
Their kisses actually look like two adults who are attracted to each other, rather than two terrified mannequins who accidentally bumped mouths. 😂
Important romance milestones include:
- First kiss around Episode 10
- Major emotional/passionate kiss around Episode 19
- Relationship becomes much more openly romantic around Episodes 21–22
- They spend an intimate night together in Episode 23
- Emotional rain kiss in Episode 33
- Final romantic kiss/proposal acceptance in Episode 36
So yes.
There is actual romantic payoff here. ❤️🔥
Thank you for your service, Husband Hou.
✨ Costumes & Styling
I also LOVED the costumes and styling in this drama. 😭❤️
Everyone looked gorgeous, but obviously Hou Minghao had my full attention. 😂🔥
Ji Bozai's styling suited him ridiculously well, and the costumes, hair, accessories, and overall fantasy aesthetic were beautiful.
This is one of those dramas where I would randomly stop paying attention to the plot for a second because I was too busy staring at what everyone was wearing. 😂
The production really nailed that elegant fantasy/xianxia look.
Very pretty people wearing very pretty clothes. I approve. ✨
💔 Unfortunately, We Do Have Breakups
Now for the part where I start glaring at the screen. 🙄
There are two real relationship separations/breakups, although neither is caused by some stupid I saw you talking to another woman so clearly our entire relationship was a lie misunderstanding.
Separation #1 — Episode 23 to around Episode 26
This one hurts.
Ming Yi needs the Golden Millet Dream because she is dying, but Ji Bozai has made a promise connected to his late master.
Instead of simply explaining everything and letting this grown man make his own decision — because apparently that would be far too sensible 😂 — Ming Yi makes him believe she used him and was only after the medicine.
He is devastated.
They part ways in Episode 23.
Once Ji Bozai learns that Ming Yi is actually Ming Xian and finally understands the truth about why she needed the Golden Millet Dream, they reconcile in Episode 26.
So yes, it is a real breakup/separation.
But thankfully it does not eat half the drama.
Separation #2 — around Episodes 32–35
Then Ji Bozai enters Noble Idiot Husband Mode™.
He deliberately pushes Ming Yi away because he plans to sacrifice himself while dealing with the larger threat facing the Six Realms.
🙄
Sir.
Have you considered simply informing your extremely capable girlfriend?
Apparently not.
There is a beautiful but painful rain confrontation and kiss around Episode 33, and eventually Ming Yi learns what he is really doing.
They return to facing the danger together by the final stretch.
So I did not love having another separation, but at least the story does not end with them apart.
🤡 The Plot
There is a LOT happening here.
Six Realms.
Secret identities.
Poisons.
Spiritual veins.
Political conspiracies.
Netherbeasts.
Hidden parentage.
People plotting against other people who are also secretly plotting against them.
Everybody has a secret.
Probably the furniture has a secret.
😂
This is one of those dramas where I remember loving the experience much more clearly than I remember every single political detail.
But the central relationship kept me interested because Ming Yi and Ji Bozai are both smart enough to actually participate in the plot instead of simply having things happen to them.
🥹 The Ending
HAPPY ENDING.
And I mean actually happy.
Not C-drama:
Maybe they're reincarnated.
Not:
He came back as a butterfly.
Not:
They stare at each other across a mountain 500 years later and I am apparently supposed to be satisfied.
😂
Ji Bozai and Ming Yi both survive.
They are together.
Ji Bozai chooses the life he actually wants instead of simply taking political power.
During their birthday celebration, he proposes again and Ming Yi kisses him to accept. ❤️
They return to the Marriage Stone and successfully carve their names together, confirming their bond.
The final Qingyun Tournament brings the story back around to where everything started, except now Ji Bozai and Ming Yi face each other as partners and equals instead of suspicious enemies.
Together. Alive. In love. DONE.
Thank you. 😂❤️
Final Take
Use this as the closing paragraph:
I loved Love in the Clouds. ❤️
Smart female lead. Powerful male lead. Both of them scheming. Both of them protecting each other. Actual chemistry. Actual kissing. Gorgeous costumes and styling. Actual romantic payoff.
And obviously:
Hou Minghao is my husband, so I was already emotionally compromised before Episode 1 even started. 😂🔥
The plot occasionally requires a conspiracy corkboard and the relationship goes through more separation than I personally ordered, but the chemistry, devotion, capable female lead, beautiful fantasy styling, and satisfying real happy ending make this an easy 4/5 for me.
