I really thought this was going to be my kind of nonsense.
A woman comes back five years later looking fabulous and successful, ready to take revenge on the husband she believes betrayed her. There is a child involved. There is a scheming stepsister. The ex-husband is still clearly obsessed with her. Everybody is lying.
Excellent.
Give me the popcorn. 🍿😂
Unfortunately, Mommy’s Counterattack took a perfectly good trashy revenge-romance setup and apparently said:
You know what this needs? SCIENCE FICTION.
And that is how I ended up arguing with a butterfly brooch.
I dropped this at Episode 6.
I tried.
I really did. 😭
The Setup Was Actually Perfect for Me
Yun Qingqing left five years earlier after everything in her life fell apart. She believed her husband Jiang Ling had cheated, she was accused of cheating herself, and she was told their baby had died.
Five years later, she returns as a successful model and fashion designer with revenge on the agenda.
YES.
This is precisely the kind of ridiculous setup that normally gets me.
Even better, she infiltrates Jiang Ling’s house disguised as a nanny while searching for evidence connected to everything that happened in the past.
We have:
- Revenge
- Secret identities
- Former spouses
- A mysterious child
- A horrible stepsister
- Rich people behaving badly
- Lingering sexual tension
- A woman coming back successful and ready to ruin people
I should have been thriving.
Instead, I was asking why nobody in this drama possesses basic critical-thinking skills. 🤦♀️
Jiang Ling, Sir. PLEASE.
One of my biggest problems is the original misunderstanding.
These two were MARRIED.
Jiang Ling supposedly loved Qingqing enough that he is still emotionally attached to her five years later, yet their relationship collapsed after manipulated evidence convinced them that cheating had happened.
Nobody thought:
“Maybe I should actually ask my spouse what happened?”
“Maybe I should investigate this?”
“Maybe suspicious evidence appearing at exactly the right moment is… suspicious?”
No.
Apparently we skipped directly to destroying the marriage.
And later?
Jiang Ling finally investigates the supposed cheating evidence.
Guess what?
IT WAS FAKE.
Amazing.
Five years too late, Detective Jiang. 👏😂
This entire tragedy needed one table, two chairs, and one uncomfortable adult conversation.
That is exactly the type of misunderstanding I hate.
Do not give me grand declarations about loving someone forever and then have the relationship collapse because somebody produces suspicious evidence and nobody communicates.
“I will love you forever.” ❤️
Five minutes later:
“I saw a picture. Goodbye forever.”
Please stop.
Zhao Yibo Is Very Handsome.
There.
I said something nice. 😂
Unfortunately, I thought his acting here was horrible.
This was one of those tragic situations where I kept looking at him thinking:
You have a perfectly good face. PLEASE USE THE REST OF IT.
Emotion?
Facial movement?
Something?
Anything?
Sir, blink dramatically. Raise an eyebrow. Twitch.
HELP ME HELP YOU. 😭
There were scenes that should have had anger, longing, jealousy, heartbreak, and all the fun ex-spouse emotions.
Instead, I kept noticing the acting.
That is never a good sign.
Good-looking face.
Wasted opportunity. 😂
Yun Qingqing Should Have Been So Much Fun
I actually like the IDEA of Qingqing.
She comes back successful.
She has money.
She has a career.
She has a revenge plan.
She is not returning after five years just to cry in a corner while everybody bullies her.
GOOD. 👏
But the drama surrounds her with so much nonsense that I stopped caring about the revenge.
And then her nanny disguise arrives.
You would think she puts on makeup, glasses, a wig, prosthetics, or even one of those ridiculous C-drama disguises where apparently changing your hairstyle makes you legally unrecognizable.
Oh no.
That would be too normal.
Because we have…
🦋 THE BUTTERFLY BROOCH
I need an entire section for this.
I cannot simply mention the butterfly brooch in passing.
The butterfly brooch deserves recognition for personally destroying what remained of my interest in this drama. 😭🦋
The drama introduces technology that can alter how other people visually perceive someone, allowing the wearer to appear like somebody else.
Excuse me?
WHERE DID THIS COME FROM?
I thought I was watching an angry ex-wife infiltrate her husband’s mansion.
Suddenly I am watching:
Spy Kids: Divorce Edition.
And because apparently I enjoy suffering, I researched what happens after I dropped the drama.
IT GETS WORSE.
The butterfly-brooch technology eventually becomes part of the FINAL VILLAIN PLAN.
A person uses it to impersonate somebody else.
And do you know how our heroes defeat this incredible futuristic perception-altering technology?
SPECIAL GLASSES.
THE GLASSES CANCEL THE BUTTERFLY.
😭😭😭
Absolutely not.
I cannot.
This was not even some stupid early gimmick the writers quietly forgot existed.
THEY COMMITTED.
They looked at that butterfly brooch and apparently said:
Yes. This is our mythology now.
I respect the confidence.
I reject the decision.
The Romance Had Potential, Which Almost Made It Worse
The frustrating thing is that Qingqing and Jiang Ling clearly still have feelings for each other.
There is jealousy.
There is attraction.
There is caring underneath all the hostility.
Around Episodes 4–5, their physical and romantic tension escalates significantly.
So yes, there was something here.
But chemistry cannot repair writing that is actively making me yell at my television.
I kept thinking:
Oh, these two could actually be fun together.
Then the plot reminded me that their marriage imploded because apparently neither one knew how to ask a follow-up question.
Romantic tension: present.
Trust: apparently sold separately. 🙄
And Then There Is An’an
An’an is the little boy who immediately becomes attached to Qingqing and starts pushing Qingqing and Jiang Ling together.
Obviously, the second this child appeared, I knew where this was going.
Come on.
Woman believes her baby died five years ago.
Mysterious child appears.
Child immediately bonds with her.
Hmm.
I wonder.
Sherlock Zhiyi has solved the case. 🕵️♀️😂
The little family scenes are some of the sweeter material in the episodes I watched.
By Episode 6, the drama is already pushing Qingqing, Jiang Ling, and An’an into fake-family situations.
Unfortunately, even Cute Child Propaganda could not defeat the butterfly brooch.
Before the Story
Qingqing and Jiang Ling were married.
Their relationship collapsed after manipulated information and accusations led them to believe infidelity had occurred.
Qingqing was also told that their baby died.
She left.
Separation: approximately five years.
Already irritating because the separation rests heavily on misinformation and terrible communication.
Episode 1
Qingqing returns as a successful model/fashion designer.
She reunites with Jiang Ling.
An’an appears and quickly starts pushing them together.
Very subtle, drama. 😂
Episodes 2–4
Qingqing infiltrates Jiang Ling’s home using her nanny identity.
The perception-altering disguise technology enters the plot and my patience begins leaving it.
Jiang Ling continues showing concern and lingering attachment despite all the hostility.
Around Episodes 4–5
The romantic and physical tension escalates.
The drama makes it obvious that these two are nowhere near emotionally finished with each other.
The exact first-kiss episode has not been independently verified.
Episode 6 — MY EXIT
Qingqing, Jiang Ling, and An’an continue being pushed into increasingly family-like situations.
Qingqing is still investigating what happened in the past.
I leave the premises. 😂
Relationship status when I dropped it: Not reconciled.
Major separation: Approximately five years before the story.
Reason: Manipulated evidence, accusations, misunderstanding, and a catastrophic failure to communicate.
Later — Researched, Not Personally Watched
Jiang Ling eventually discovers that important evidence against Qingqing was fake.
The truth surrounding their separation is exposed.
An’an is revealed to be Qingqing and Jiang Ling’s biological son.
Qingqing and Jiang Ling eventually reconcile.
Qingqing is pregnant again by the ending.
Final main-couple status: Together.
Ending: Happy Ending.
🔎 Reality Check — Could That Butterfly Brooch Actually Work?
Short answer:
NO. 😂
Real augmented-reality systems can change what a USER sees by putting digital images into that person’s own field of view.
Current optical see-through AR systems rely on things such as:
- near-eye displays
- head-mounted displays
- transparent optics
- optical waveguides
- glasses/headsets worn by the observer
Research into modern AR still discusses major challenges involving image quality, focus, occlusion, field of view, brightness, and how virtual images are delivered into the wearer’s eyes.
That is VERY different from a tiny brooch making every naked-eye observer in the room visually perceive one human being as an entirely different person.
A decorative brooch cannot remotely rewrite another person’s normal vision like the drama shows.
And hilariously, the fact that special GLASSES eventually block the brooch almost makes more technological sense than the brooch itself—because actual AR technology commonly involves eyewear.
Almost.
The drama gets no science points from me for accidentally wandering within shouting distance of reality. 😭🦋
Reality Check verdict: Fun sci-fi nonsense, not realistic modern disguise technology.
Frontiers in Virtual Reality: Xia et al. (2022), “Challenges and Advancements for AR Optical See-Through Near-Eye Displays: A Review” https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/virtual-reality/articles/10.3389/frvir.2022.838237/full
Scientific Reports: “Metasurface wavefront control for high-performance user-natural augmented reality waveguide glasses” https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-09680-1
real AR alters the wearer’s visual experience through display/optical hardware. There is no demonstrated tiny brooch technology remotely forcing ordinary observers to see a completely different human identity with their unaided eyes.
👀 What Happens After I Dropped It?
I researched the remaining plot because if I am going to complain about this butterfly brooch, I am going to complain accurately.
The cheating evidence really was fake
Jiang Ling eventually learns that the supposed evidence against Qingqing was fabricated/manipulated.
So yes.
My complaint stands:
COMMUNICATION COULD HAVE PREVENTED MOST OF THIS DRAMA.
An’an really is their son
The child Qingqing believed had died was switched.
An’an is Qingqing and Jiang Ling’s biological son.
I am shocked.
Shocked, I tell you. 😂
Qingqing and Jiang Ling reconcile
Eventually, yes.
The truth comes out and they reunite.
Qingqing is also pregnant again by the ending.
There is more kidnapping/coercion nonsense
Because apparently we had not suffered enough, later material includes kidnapping and forced divorce-related documents.
The butterfly brooch becomes FINAL-VILLAIN TECHNOLOGY
Yes.
Really.
Ziheng uses the butterfly brooch to impersonate Qingqing’s uncle.
He kidnaps Qingqing and sets up his final revenge plan.
An’an then brings GLASSES that block the brooch’s visual effect.
Jiang Ling puts them on.
The fake appearance disappears.
Ziheng is exposed.
Villain defeated.
Family rescued.
I wish I were making this up.
I am not. 😭
What Worked
I am not going to pretend absolutely everything was terrible.
The revenge premise
The original concept is exactly the type of thing I normally enjoy.
Successful woman comes back after five years ready to dismantle the lives of everybody who wronged her?
YES PLEASE. 🔥
Qingqing has agency
She has a career.
She has plans.
She has money.
She has revenge goals.
She is not completely helpless.
The ex-spouse tension
The leads still being attracted to each other gives the story some potentially entertaining tension.
An’an
The child connecting them provides some of the cutest family material.
Zhao Yibo’s face
The face card was not declined.
The acting card and the face card were apparently processed by entirely different financial institutions. 😂
What Did NOT Work
The acting
Especially Zhao Yibo for me.
I simply did not believe enough of Jiang Ling’s emotions.
The original misunderstanding
I cannot stand supposedly deeply loving couples destroying their relationship because they immediately believe manipulated evidence instead of communicating.
Especially when THEY ARE ALREADY MARRIED.
The writing logic
The drama continually chooses complicated nonsense over one functioning adult asking:
“Hey, what actually happened?”
The technology
BUTTERFLY.
BROOCH.
🦋
I will probably complain about this thing forever.
The tone
There is a difference between:
This is ridiculous and I am having SO MUCH FUN. 😂
and
This is ridiculous and now I am irritated. 🙄
Mommy’s Counterattack landed in category two.
I love nonsense when the nonsense is entertaining.
This drama appeared extremely committed to its magical Bluetooth butterfly identity technology.
That somehow made it worse.
Final Thoughts
Mommy’s Counterattack should have been exactly my kind of short drama.
It had revenge.
It had ex-spouses who were obviously still obsessed with each other.
It had a secret-child storyline.
It had scheming relatives.
It had a successful female lead returning after five years ready to cause problems.
All the ingredients were sitting RIGHT THERE.
And then the drama mixed terrible communication, questionable acting, and a futuristic butterfly brooch into the pot.
I lasted six episodes.
That was enough. 😂
I am especially annoyed because the central tragedy depends on two people who supposedly loved each other deeply having almost no trust in each other.
If somebody tells me my longtime partner cheated, I am going to require slightly more evidence than:
Source: trust me, bro.
These people apparently did not.
And then, just when I thought the plot could not become more ridiculous, I learned that the butterfly brooch becomes part of the final villain plan and requires ANTI-BUTTERFLY GLASSES.
What am I supposed to do with that information?!
I cannot review this like a normal romance anymore.
This is now personal.
I came here for a vengeful ex-wife.
I left because of wearable holographic insect jewelry.
🦋😭
Rating: 1.5/5
Status: DROPPED at Episode 6.
No regrets.
