Love in Red Dust (红尘四合): Wang Xingyue and Xu Ruohan's Upcoming Historical Romance Has Secrets, Revenge, and a Dangerous Attraction
红尘四合

A handsome general with a score to settle. A young woman disguised as a man. Two families connected by tragedy. And, naturally, two people who have absolutely no idea how complicated their relationship is about to become.
Well, that sounds like my kind of historical C-drama.
Love in Red Dust (红尘四合), starring Wang Xingyue (王星越) and Xu Ruohan (徐若晗), is an upcoming historical romance from iQIYI that mixes hidden identities, revenge, political conspiracies, and romantic comedy.
The drama is currently scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, although an exact premiere date has not been officially confirmed.
And after looking into the storyline and official promotional material, I can see why this one is attracting attention.
What Is Love in Red Dust About?
The story begins on a Mid-Autumn Festival night when two lives are devastated by separate tragedies.
Yuwen Hongce (宇文弘策), a general known as the Fox General, is ambushed in Sailun Valley. His entire army is wiped out, leaving him determined to uncover the corruption and conspiracy behind the disaster.
That same night, Wen Dingyi (温定宜) loses everything when her father is falsely accused of collaborating with the enemy. Her family is destroyed, forcing her to abandon her former identity to survive.
She takes the name Mu Xiaoshu (沐小树), disguises herself as a man, and becomes an executioner's apprentice.
Eight years later, their paths finally cross at an execution ground.
When Mu Xiaoshu finds herself facing death, Yuwen Hongce intervenes and saves her.
Sounds like the beginning of a promising romance, doesn't it?
Except there's a rather enormous problem.
He doesn't know she's the daughter of a disgraced official accused of treason.
And she doesn't realize he's connected to the imperial family responsible for her family's downfall.
Oh, this is going to get messy.
Wang Xingyue Plays the Mysterious Fox General
Wang Xingyue portrays Yuwen Hongce, a man whose life has been shaped by military betrayal and his determination to uncover the truth.
After losing his soldiers in an ambush, he spends years quietly investigating the corruption that led to their deaths.
He's not simply a handsome nobleman wandering around waiting to fall in love. He has his own dangerous mission, and uncovering the truth could place him in direct conflict with the woman he eventually grows close to.
Wang Xingyue has already demonstrated his ability to portray intelligent, complicated historical characters, particularly in The Double (墨雨云间).
For this role, the real question is how the drama balances his investigation with the developing romance.
A protective, intelligent male lead can be wonderful. But I want to see the relationship develop naturally rather than disappear behind endless political investigations.
Xu Ruohan Plays a Heroine Who Refuses to Stay Defeated
Xu Ruohan portrays Wen Dingyi, who survives her family's destruction by assuming the male identity Mu Xiaoshu.
I already find this part of the premise interesting.
Rather than remaining helpless after losing everything, the heroine adapts to her circumstances and learns an unconventional profession.
Becoming an executioner's apprentice is certainly not the usual career path for a historical romance heroine.
Her disguise allows her to survive in a dangerous world, but it also creates a serious complication once she becomes entangled with Yuwen Hongce.
Their growing connection is built on identities and family histories neither fully understands.
And eventually, those secrets will have to come out.
What I want to see is whether the drama allows her to remain resourceful and independent once the romance becomes more serious.
A clever heroine is always more interesting when the writing lets her stay clever.
A Romance Built on Hidden Identities and Dangerous Secrets
The central relationship is easily one of the most intriguing aspects of Love in Red Dust.
Both characters have experienced devastating losses.
Both are pursuing answers connected to the past.
And both are hiding information that could change how they see each other.
The official storyline suggests a romance that develops as two initially distrustful people learn to rely on one another.
That creates plenty of possibilities for emotional tension, protective moments, and the kind of romantic payoff that makes historical dramas so addictive.
However, there's an important distinction between a promising romantic premise and a romance that actually delivers.
For now, the promotional material cannot establish how affectionate the couple becomes, whether their relationship includes prolonged separations, or how much time the story devotes to their romance.
Those are questions the completed episodes will have to answer.
Historical Romance Meets Mystery and Comedy
Despite the tragic events that bring the main characters into the story, iQIYI describes Love in Red Dust as a historical romantic comedy.
The drama is adapted from the novel of the same Chinese title by You Sijie (尤四姐).
Its story moves between ordinary people's lives and the political struggles of the imperial world.
That combination could give the drama an entertaining balance of romance, humor, and suspense.
The heroine's disguise also opens the door for awkward encounters and mistaken assumptions, while the military conspiracy provides a more serious mystery running through the story.
Of course, I hope the comedy doesn't undermine the emotional stakes. A story involving the destruction of two families needs to give those tragedies appropriate weight.
But if the drama handles both sides well, it could offer more than a straightforward revenge romance.

When Will Love in Red Dust Premiere?
iQIYI's official 2026–2027 programming slate identifies Love in Red Dust as a fourth-quarter 2026 release.
However, the platform's international drama listing currently remains marked Coming Soon.
That means there is no officially confirmed exact premiere date to report yet.
The drama's catalog information lists 36 episodes, although the final broadcast configuration should be checked when the official release schedule becomes available.
Where Can You Watch Love in Red Dust?

The existence of an international listing does not automatically mean the completed series is currently available to watch in every region.
Does Love in Red Dust Have a Happy Ending?
This is the question I'm particularly interested in.
The premise has several elements I enjoy in a historical romance: a resourceful heroine, an intelligent male lead, hidden identities, and two people navigating dangerous circumstances together.
But there's also a considerable amount of emotional baggage between them.
Their families' histories are closely connected, and the eventual discovery of those connections could create some serious relationship problems.
At this point, the television adaptation's ending is not verified.
We also don't have confirmed answers about when the main couple officially gets together, whether they break up, or whether the romance ends with a clear and satisfying commitment.
I'm not going to label it a happy-ending romance until the adaptation actually earns that classification.
My First Impression: Worth Keeping an Eye On
Love in Red Dust has an appealing combination of romance, conspiracy, revenge, and a heroine who knows how to survive.
Wang Xingyue as a calculating general and Xu Ruohan as a disguised heroine certainly make an interesting pairing.
What will matter most is the execution.
Will their chemistry live up to the premise? Will the heroine remain clever? Will the political mystery strengthen the romance instead of overshadowing it?
And, most importantly, will the writers let these two people have a satisfying relationship without dragging them through endless misunderstandings?
Those are the things I'll be watching for.
For now, Love in Red Dust (红尘四合) is on my radar as an upcoming historical romance, and I'll be watching for its official premiere date and confirmed international release details.
