A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

🌸 My Review

Overdo? Oh, it absolutely did. 😭

I finished all 33 episodes, and I am giving this one 2/5. The chemistry was there. The attractive leads were there. My patience, however, was gradually escorted out of the building.

This drama throws in fake death, revenge, obsession, family conflict, coercive romance, pregnancy, a secret child, war, murder, political conspiracy, a six-year separation, reconciliation, and finally a tragic death. Somebody needed to confiscate the writers’ plot-twist privileges. 😭

Normally, dark romance, revenge, secrets, and an obsessive or devoted male lead can work for me. I am not automatically frightened by a red flag in a handsome coat. But Overdo mistakes “more drama” for “better drama.” It keeps escalating until the romance feels exhausting instead of satisfying.

💋 Chemistry With Too Much Suffering Attached

Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan have strong physical chemistry and tension. There are multiple kisses, embraces, and some effective emotional moments. Those things help. They just cannot carry an entire relationship through this much resentment, revenge, withholding of information, and hot/cold behavior.

The Episode 3 washroom kiss is forced: Susu slaps Qingyi afterward. That is coercive behavior, not a cute romantic milestone. Later kisses, including Episode 14 and the kiss Susu initiates in Episode 17, give us actual mutual affection. I wish the relationship had more room to breathe around it.

The brother’s-fiancée setup also makes this a poor fit for my preferences. Add possessiveness, coercion, misunderstandings, and repeated emotional push-pull, and the chemistry starts feeling buried under the plot.

⏳ Six Years? SIX?

There is an earlier fake-death separation, then a major relationship rupture around Episodes 20–23. Episode 24 gives us a six-year time jump after Susu leaves while pregnant.

“Six years is not separation. That is a government census interval.” 🤦‍♀️

Their son, Le’an, is born during those years apart. Qingyi meets him after the reunion without initially knowing the child is his, and discovers the truth in Episode 26. I like a secret-child story, but here it is tied to exactly the kind of enormous separation that wears me out.

To be clear: the fake death is a separation; the Episodes 20–23 rupture is a romantic relationship break; the six-year gap is a major physical/time separation. These are different problems, and this drama managed to collect them all.

💔 THE ENDING — TRAGIC

Full finale spoilers: the main couple do not end up together.

Qingyi and Susu reconcile around Episodes 26–27. He publicly announces marriage plans in Episode 27, and they take a family portrait. Near the finale, the ring/commitment scene makes it look as though they are finally ready to have a future together.

Then Qingyi dies while stopping the plot to poison the city water supply. Susu survives with their son. His death creates permanent separation; it is not another breakup.

The later happy/family imagery does not change that canonical outcome. The IF-line/alternate-world happy material can show another possibility, but main storyline = tragic ending. I am not filing this under happy endings because a bonus lets us imagine something kinder.

Where Qingyi and Susu End Up

Tragic Ending — Qingyi dies; Susu survives with their son. An actual relationship rupture precedes the six-year separation.

💗 Shen Zhiyi’s Drama Reality Check

Finished all 33 episodes. Full relationship and ending spoilers.

💕 Romance
Heavy — the entire drama revolves around Qingyi and Susu’s tortured relationship.
🔥 Chemistry
Strong physical chemistry and tension, but buried under too much suffering.
💋 Kissing
High — multiple kisses, including Episodes 3, 14, and 17. Clearly warn that Episode 3 is forced/coercive rather than romantic.
🤗 Skinship
Moderate — embraces, physical closeness, and later family moments, but angst dominates.
🌶️ Spiciness / Adult Intimacy
Mild to moderate — strong sexual tension and kissing, but not explicit.
🚩 ML Red Flag
High — possessiveness, coercive kissing, rough emotional behavior, and obsessive tendencies.
👑 Female Lead Competence
Strong — Susu survives severe trauma, pursues revenge, rebuilds her life, and later investigates the Red Pill conspiracy.
⏱️ Romance Timing
Immediate chemistry, painfully delayed relationship stability.
❤️‍🔥 Relationship Payoff
Poor — they finally reconcile and plan a future only for Qingyi to die.
💔 Breakup
Yes — major relationship rupture around Episodes 20–23.
⏳ Separation / Conflict
Extreme — fake death plus a later six-year separation, war, revenge, family opposition, and death-related separation.
💍 Final Relationship Status
Not together — Qingyi dies; Susu survives with their son.
📖 Plot
Extremely overloaded melodrama: revenge, false identities, fake death, family conspiracies, pregnancy, a secret child, war, poison plots, and multiple deaths. Somebody needed to confiscate the writers’ plot-twist privileges. 😭
🐾 Animal Harm
No verified dog/cat harm identified in the completed research.
About these assessments

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

⭐ Why I Gave It 2/5

The strong chemistry, attractive leads, multiple kissing/high-tension scenes, and some effective emotional moments keep this from scoring lower for me.

But the six-year separation, earlier fake death, actual romantic rupture, hot/cold dynamics, forced kissing, brother’s-fiancée setup, resentment, revenge, hidden pregnancy, secret child, and repeated withholding of information overwhelm the romantic payoff. The drama piles on multiple deaths and then takes away the main couple’s future just when they appear ready to have one.

I can enjoy darker romance. I still want the romance to give me something back. Here, the suffering takes up too much space, the melodrama is overloaded, and the main couple never receive a happy ending.

Final Rating: 2/5 · Finished · Tragic Ending.

It is, quite literally, Overdo-ne. 😭😂
