About these assessments
My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL
My Review
Provoke was the first Republican-era drama I managed to finish, and honestly, I finished it begrudgingly. The setup had my attention: Jiang Ying enters a wealthy family to get revenge, while the man presented as her new stepson has secrets of his own. Two people scheming under the same roof? I could work with that. 👀
I could also see why people liked the tension between Jiang Ying and Du Xunyu. My problem is what the drama did with it. I wanted the romance to go somewhere more satisfying, especially after spending 25 episodes with these two.
And the kiss. The one proper kiss I remember was in Du Jingchuang’s imagination. In the father’s imagination, Susu! Why are you showing me the romantic payoff and then telling me it didn’t happen? 😭😂 That was so dumb.
The ending technically gives the main couple a happy outcome. They survive, confess their feelings, and end up together on the train. I still thought the ending was stupid. A happy ending can tell me the couple stays together and somehow leave me feeling shortchanged, and Provoke managed exactly that. I finished it wondering why it got such good feedback. 🙄
The other thing to know before watching is the stepmother/stepson setup. Jiang Ying marries the man Du Xunyu is pretending is his father. They are not biologically related, and Du Xunyu is not actually that man’s son, but the family-role premise is a major part of the drama. If that kind of propriety issue bothers you, go in knowing it is there.
Final verdict: Provoke had a setup that should have worked for me, but the romance and ending did not deliver. 3/5. And I would like my real kiss back, thank you. 😂
