👑 The Female Lead Is Basically Why This Got a 4/5
I LOVE Ye Haimeng. 😂❤️
Honestly, she is the biggest reason this drama got a 4/5 from me.
This woman comes back after everyone basically thinks she is gone and immediately starts taking back her company, her property, her life, and her dignity.
YES.
She is smart. She is confident. She knows people are plotting against her, and she does not just sit around waiting to become the next victim. She investigates, plans, retaliates, negotiates, and sometimes just walks into a room like:
Hello. The queen has returned. Move. 👑😂
That is my kind of female lead.
The entire premise is ridiculous in the best possible way.
Murder!
Money!
Inheritance!
Secret relationships!
Corporate warfare!
People supposedly dying and then not being dead!
Hidden evidence!
Evil relatives!
This is not technically a Korean makjang, obviously, but spiritually? 😂
Makjang has entered the chat.
And I enjoyed it.
❤️ Ye Haimeng & Lu Siyu
Now we arrive at my problem.
Lu Siyu is the younger brother of Haimeng's late husband.
So yes.
Her brother-in-law.
🤦♀️
The drama openly gives us a romance between Haimeng and her deceased husband's younger brother.
That is NOT a relationship setup I normally like.
I generally do not enjoy romances involving siblings-in-law, pseudo-family relationships, or anything that makes me stop and mentally diagram the family tree before people kiss. 😂
And yet…
I liked these two.
Damn it.
Their dynamic works surprisingly well.
Haimeng is older, more experienced, emotionally guarded, powerful, and completely capable of handling herself.
Siyu is younger, more emotionally open, affectionate, stubborn, and increasingly devoted to her.
And somehow it works.
This is actually the only older-woman/younger-man romance I have liked so far.
Normally that trope does absolutely nothing for me.
Here, I think it worked because Haimeng never gets turned into some insecure older woman worrying every five minutes about being older than him.
She remains THE QUEEN.
And Siyu is perfectly happy about it. 😂❤️
😂 My Husband Is Here
Of course, we have Wu Junting.
MY HUSBAND.
Sir. 👀
Lu Siyu starts off suspicious of Haimeng, but once he learns more about what actually happened to her, that hostility gradually turns into concern, attraction, and then full-on devotion.
And once this man chooses Haimeng, he CHOOSES her.
His own family tries to use him against her, yet Siyu refuses to simply become their weapon against Haimeng.
That's what I want.
Not:
“My family says you're evil, so goodbye.”
NO.
This man is basically:
My family is insane. I'm going with my girlfriend.
Correct answer. 😂👏
🔥 Chemistry & Romance
I loved their dynamic more than I expected.
The romance is enemies-to-allies-to-lovers, but thankfully it does not wait until the final five minutes to give us an actual relationship.
Their first kiss happens around Episodes 14–15, and Haimeng is the one who pulls him in.
Which is extremely appropriate for her character. 😂🔥
Then in Episode 16, SHE goes after HIM.
Haimeng stops Siyu from being sent away, openly confesses her feelings, and asks him to leave with her.
They choose each other.
And she explicitly refers to him as her boyfriend.
THANK YOU.
An actual relationship label!
Later we get jealousy, more kissing, established-couple behavior, and the two promising that no matter what happens, they will trust each other and not break up.
I approve. 😂❤️
🚨 And No, I Wouldn't Count the Late Drama as a Breakup
This was important because the late drama gets VERY dramatic.
There is a crisis involving Siyu, his family, inheritance, and control of Haimeng's company.
For a moment, Haimeng has reason to question what is happening.
But Siyu is not secretly betraying her.
His family literally forcibly takes him away and confines him.
Haimeng tries to get him back.
When they reunite, they reaffirm that they trust each other and do not want to separate.
So I do NOT classify this as a regular romantic breakup.
Then the drama apparently decides we haven't suffered enough.
Siyu jumps from a bridge while trying to escape his father's control.
Haimeng jumps after him.
He disappears.
Everyone thinks he drowned.
🙄
So yes, there is a brief presumed-death separation.
But it is NOT a breakup.
And then Siyu turns up alive.
Haimeng runs straight into his arms.
Sir.
Maybe WARN YOUR GIRLFRIEND before pulling a fake-death-adjacent stunt next time. 🤦♀️😂
🍿 The Makjang Energy
This drama has SO MANY clichés.
But somehow I enjoyed them.
We've got:
- rich families fighting over companies
- marriage and money problems
- attempted murder
- secret inheritance documents
- hidden relationships
- family secrets
- murderous relatives
- corporate takeovers
- people being presumed dead
- people returning from the dead
- blackmail
- family betrayal
- secret evidence conveniently appearing exactly when needed
Basically, if somebody opened a drawer and found a USB drive containing evidence of twelve felonies, I would barely blink by that point. 😂
Is it realistic?
Absolutely not.
Was I entertained?
YES.
And I think that is the difference.
The story knows it is melodramatic.
👑 Why It Worked for Me
Haimeng.
That's it.
Okay, not JUST her. 😂
But she carries a huge part of this drama for me.
I liked that she had agency.
I liked that she actively pursued Siyu once she decided she wanted him.
I liked that she wasn't constantly waiting for a man to solve her problems.
And although the brother-in-law relationship bothered me, I liked Haimeng and Siyu together enough that I eventually tolerated it.
That is saying something because I normally run from this kind of family-tree nonsense. 😂
The older-woman/younger-man dynamic also shocked me because this is normally another romance setup I avoid.
Yet somehow these two got away with BOTH.
Congratulations.
You have achieved the impossible. 😂👏
