Should You Watch The Lament of Autumn?
So far, yes — particularly if you enjoy strong acting, emotionally complicated characters, and Republican-era romance.
The biggest strength is the acting. The biggest drawback is the possessive male lead and the complicated romantic situation.
Anyone hoping for a sweet, stable relationship without jealousy or romantic complications might want to proceed carefully. 😂
My Initial Thoughts
I'm giving The Lament of Autumn a provisional 4/5, and the acting is a major reason why.
Cheng Lei and Xu Ruohan have plenty of difficult emotions and complicated situations to work with, and their performances make this story worth paying attention to.
Cheng Lei plays Yu Changxuan, a powerful military commander's son who is calculating, arrogant, and very accustomed to having things his way.
Unfortunately for him, Ye Pingjun has opinions of her own. 😂
Xu Ruohan plays Ye Pingjun, an educated young woman trying to support her sick mother. She's intelligent, resourceful, and unwilling to automatically submit to someone just because he has power.
Their connection begins with a criminal accusation, but the situation gradually becomes far more complicated.
And judging by Yu Changxuan's behavior, apparently falling in love has completely disrupted this man's ability to behave normally. 🙄
Romance, Chemistry, and Red Flags 🚩
Yu Changxuan initially uses Ye Pingjun in his political maneuvering, but his interest in her becomes increasingly personal.
There's just one problem.
She has another man in her life.
Jiang Xueting, her childhood sweetheart, returns and becomes a serious romantic obstacle.
By Episode 8, Ye Pingjun has agreed to marry him.
Meanwhile, Yu Changxuan is becoming increasingly jealous and possessive.
In Episode 10, their dressing-room confrontation illustrates just how controlling his behavior can become. He corners her and challenges her about their connection.
By Episode 11, he's demanding a kiss that she refuses to give him.
Sir. Being handsome does not automatically make that romantic. 🙄
However, Yu Changxuan isn't written as an entirely one-dimensional character.
His difficult relationship with his father, the political conflicts surrounding his family, and his evolving concern for civilians reveal different aspects of his personality.
He also demonstrates genuine protective instincts.
In Episode 12, he takes a knife wound while protecting Ye Pingjun.
He's capable of devotion, but that doesn't erase the controlling behavior.
The romance is intense, but it's also complicated, and the story still has considerable work to do before this relationship becomes convincing.
When Jealousy Turns Into Coercion
Things become considerably darker after Episode 12.
When Jiang Xueting is arrested, Yu Changxuan uses the situation to pressure Ye Pingjun. Her fiancé's freedom becomes a bargaining chip, and suddenly this is about more than one jealous man trying to win someone's attention.
In Episode 13, Yu forcibly kisses Ye, and she fights back by stabbing him with her hairpin.
That is not a romantic misunderstanding. She is resisting an unwanted advance.
Episode 14 makes the imbalance of power even more obvious. Ye finds herself caught in an arrangement she does not freely want, while Yu continues trying to control her decisions.
He even throws her engagement ring into the water.
And she retrieves it.
Apparently, this man has not figured out that throwing away someone's ring does not automatically erase her feelings. 🙄
MangoTV's Episode 15 promotional highlight describes the original one-year arrangement becoming something far more possessive, with Yu wanting Ye to remain in his life permanently. The official player lists the complete Episode 15 under SVIP; the highlight remains promotional evidence, not confirmation of every scene in the full episode.
His growing attachment may drive the romance, but devotion and control are not interchangeable.
The acting remains a major strength of the drama. However, these developments make the relationship substantially darker than the initial episodes suggested.
Whether the story eventually gives the characters genuine growth, mutual trust, and a satisfying relationship remains to be seen.

The First Kiss: Apparently, We're Dreaming Now 😭
Episode 8 finally delivers a kiss.
Except there's a catch.
The kiss happens in Yu Changxuan's dream.
That's right.
The man is imagining romance while the actual woman is busy maintaining her boundaries.
And the audience gets a dream kiss instead of a real relationship milestone.
I'm sorry, but this is almost funny. 😂
The scene creates romantic tension, but it absolutely does not count as a proper first kiss between the characters in the real-world storyline.
Through the verified developments, the actual relationship remains unresolved.
We have attraction, jealousy, manipulation, and protective gestures.
What we don't have yet is an established, mutually acknowledged romance.
The Plot Beyond Romance
The Lament of Autumn isn't just about an arrogant military heir becoming obsessed with a woman who refuses to cooperate.
The larger story involves military corruption, political struggles, family power, and the suffering of ordinary civilians.
Yu Changxuan must navigate his father's expectations while determining what kind of military leader he wants to become.
Ye Pingjun finds herself drawn into conflicts involving people with considerably more power than she has.
Jiang Xueting also becomes involved in investigating military abuses.
These overlapping stories make romantic loyalties more complicated.
The characters' personal feelings cannot be separated from the political decisions that affect their lives.

Does The Lament of Autumn Have a Happy Ending?
Not yet known. The drama is still airing.
The television finale remains unverified as of October 19, 2026.
Promotional material and the source novel suggest a turbulent story, but the adaptation's final outcome cannot yet be confirmed.
It would be premature to classify the ending as Happy, Bittersweet, Tragic, or Ambiguous/Open.
Whether Yu Changxuan and Ye Pingjun ultimately end up together remains unknown.

Does The Lament of Autumn Have a Breakup?
No confirmed main-couple breakup through the verified episodes. Yu and Ye have not established a mutually agreed romantic relationship. My Initial Verdict — 4/5 ⭐
The Lament of Autumn has an interesting mix of political intrigue, complicated family relationships, strong personalities, and a male lead whose jealousy is creating all kinds of unnecessary drama.
The acting is the biggest reason for my provisional 4/5.
What remains to be seen is whether the writing can deliver a convincing romantic relationship rather than relying entirely on jealousy, power struggles, and emotional tension.
The final evaluation will depend on the relationship development, the handling of the male lead's behavior, and the eventual ending.
