Opening
I went into Royal Betrothal expecting a lot more romance.
I mean…
It is literally called ROYAL BETROTHAL. 😂❤️
Instead, I got imperial examinations, corruption investigations, criminal organizations, conspiracies, court politics, secret identities, fallen kingdoms, rebellion, and war.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, the drama remembered that Meng Tinghui and Ying Gua were supposed to fall in love. 😭
The romance itself was not the problem.
There just was not enough of it for me.
The Plot
Meng Tinghui is an orphan who wants to change her life by passing the imperial examinations and entering government service.
She crosses paths with the young emperor Ying Gua while he is traveling outside the palace, and the two eventually become allies.
From there, Meng Tinghui keeps getting pulled deeper into government investigations involving corruption, criminal groups, political conspiracies, and secrets connected to her own past.
And honestly?
There is A LOT happening. 😂
This drama sometimes felt much more like a political investigation drama with romance attached than the grand imperial love story I expected from that title.
Meng Tinghui 👑
One thing I can definitely give Meng Tinghui is that she is capable.
She is ambitious, intelligent, observant, and actually has goals beyond romance.
She fights her way into a system that was not designed to welcome her and earns political authority through her own ability.
I appreciate a female lead who can walk into court and actually use her brain.
Thank you. 😂
The problem is that once the drama starts piling her secret identity, Zhongwan, the Blood Moon Society, rebellion, and the entire fate of multiple kingdoms onto her shoulders…
the romance starts fighting for oxygen. 😭
Ying Gua
Ying Gua and Tinghui work best for me when they are actually functioning as partners.
He respects her intelligence.
He trusts her with serious political work.
He protects her without demanding that she become completely useless and dependent on him.
All good things. ❤️
But again—
WHERE IS MY ROMANCE?
You gave me:
- an emperor
- a brilliant female official
- mutual attraction
- political danger
- secret meetings
- imperial marriage potential
and somehow I still spent most of this drama investigating criminals. 😂
The Romance ❤️
This is definitely a slow burn.
There are feelings and romantic tension earlier, but the major payoff is late.
Around Episode 22, they accidentally eat aphrodisiac fruit and almost have a much more intimate moment…
and naturally somebody interrupts them.
OF COURSE. 🙄😂
Then around Episode 24, Ying Gua finally openly confesses that he loves Meng Tinghui.
She admits she loves him too.
And we finally get the passionate kiss. ❤️
EPISODE 24.
OUT OF 32.
Sir.
We have been busy. 😭
That is basically my biggest problem with the drama.
The romantic scenes are fine when we finally get them.
I just wanted substantially more couple time, affection, and romantic payoff before the final political chaos took over.
Then We Finally Get a Wedding…
Around Episode 30, Ying Gua and Tinghui finally reach their grand imperial wedding.
So naturally I thought:
FINALLY.
MY REWARD.
😂❤️
No.
Absolutely not.
The wedding becomes part of a massive Blood Moon Society attack.
Tinghui's hidden identity as the lost Zhongwan princess is exposed.
The ministers immediately start demanding punishment.
She literally cuts the Zhongwan tattoo from her own shoulder to prove where her loyalty lies.
Then she threatens herself to force Ying Gua to spare Yin Qing.
And Ying Gua breaks the phoenix pendant and lets her leave.
So yes:
This is an actual relationship rupture/separation.
But it is NOT one of those stupid:
“I overheard half a conversation and now I refuse to speak to you for six episodes”
breakups.
This one comes out of the massive political and identity conflict surrounding them.
I still did not enjoy losing the romance right when I finally thought I was getting the wedding payoff, though. 😭
The Ending ❤️
And then the drama decides I have apparently not suffered enough.
After the political conflict is finally resolved, Meng Tinghui leaves.
She spends approximately three years away from Ying Gua and eventually becomes a teacher at the Shazhou Women's Academy.
THREE YEARS.
Because apparently Episode 24 was too early for me to relax. 😂😭
Ying Gua eventually finds her.
They reunite.
He asks her to stand beside him again and continue facing the future together.
So yes:
❤️ Happy Ending
They are alive.
They reunite.
They still love each other.
They choose each other again.
But this is NOT the type of ending where I get ten minutes of them happily married in the palace with children running around while everybody smiles at me.
The drama makes me survive an interrupted wedding, political breakup, war, and a three-year separation before giving them back to each other.
So technically happy?
Yes.
The romantic payoff I expected from something called Royal Betrothal?
Ehhhhhh. 😂
Final Thoughts
I liked enough of Royal Betrothal to give it 3.5/5, but I absolutely expected more romance.
The political story is substantial.
Meng Tinghui is capable.
The main couple makes sense as partners.
And the romance does eventually become mutual and explicit.
But it takes until around Episode 24 for the big confession and kiss, then the wedding explodes around Episode 30, and then I get a THREE-YEAR separation before the final reunion.
That is a lot of political suffering for a woman who came here because the word BETROTHAL was in the title. 😂😭
Give me the emperor.
Give me the smart female official.
Give me the scheming.
Fine.
But please also remember that I ordered ROMANCE.
⭐ 3.5/5
