Shameless Lover is one of those dramas where I actually liked the beginning enough that I’m annoyed I ended up dropping it. 😂
The setup was fun. Shen Zhili is searching for the medicinal ingredients she needs to revive her master when Su Chenche shows up and drags her into something much stranger: whenever he dies, time resets.
Naturally, the two of them end up stuck together trying to figure out what is causing the loop, how to break it, and what exactly is going on behind everything.
That immediately got my attention.
The leads had chemistry. The premise was interesting. The story moved quickly enough at first.
And then the warning lights started flashing. 🚨😂
🙄 The Fake-Amnesia Problem
My biggest problem was Su Chenche’s fake amnesia and hidden motive.
Now listen.
I can handle a scheming male lead.
Sometimes I LOVE a scheming male lead. 👀😂
What I hate is this particular romance formula:
Man approaches woman for a secret reason → feelings become real → woman discovers he lied → trust collapses → angst.
Because once I realize that is where we are heading, every cute romantic scene suddenly feels like it has an expiration date stamped on it. 😭
Instead of enjoying the romance, I’m sitting there waiting for:
“YOU LIED TO ME.”
And unfortunately…
I was right. 😂
🔍 I Dropped It, So I Researched What Happens Next
I stopped watching around Episode 8.
I am NOT going to pretend I finished something I didn’t, but I also don’t want somebody reading one of my reviews and having no idea what happens afterward.
So I researched the remaining episodes and ending.
And yep.
The exact problem I saw coming becomes a major source of conflict.
Shen Zhili eventually discovers that Su Chenche faked his amnesia and approached her while hiding his real intentions.
She feels deceived and manipulated, and the trust between them takes a serious hit.
So I was basically sitting at Episode 8 watching the train tracks being laid while the Trust-Issue Express was already coming around the mountain. 🚂😭
This is exactly why I bailed.
I don’t mind secrets.
I don’t mind manipulation in a darker romance.
I don’t even mind a morally questionable male lead.
What I dislike is when the romance becomes:
secret motive → feelings → reveal → distrust → separation/conflict → reconciliation
because I have watched that story approximately nine billion times. 😂
😑 And Then There Was Ye Qianqian
Then we had the Ye Qianqian fiancée/engagement situation.
NO THANK YOU. 😂
The good news — which I confirmed through researching the later story — is that Ye Qianqian is not Su Chenche’s endgame.
She ultimately ends up connected romantically with Hua Jiuye, not Su Chenche.
So this does NOT turn into Ye Qianqian stealing the male lead or becoming his final romantic partner.
But while I was watching?
I already had enough distrust hanging over this couple.
I did not need a fake-fiancée/engagement mess sprinkled on top like emotional seasoning. 😭
❤️ Shen Zhili & Su Chenche
And this is the frustrating part.
I liked them.
Sun Xuening and Geng Yeting had chemistry.
Their relationship had the kind of annoyed-at-each-other-but-obviously-attracted dynamic that usually works very well for me.
The time-loop situation also gives them an actual reason to stay together and work together, rather than the drama simply throwing them into random romantic scenes.
So my problem was NEVER:
“These two have no chemistry.”
My problem was:
“Oh God. I can already see the trust-conflict arc coming.” 😂
Once I know the romance is walking straight into one of my least-favorite tropes, I start losing interest very quickly.
😂 Short Drama, Long Patience Test
This is a short-format drama.
That SHOULD make it easy for me to binge.
But once I started anticipating the deception reveal and relationship fallout, even the short format wasn’t enough to keep me going.
Short dramas have less time to waste my patience.
Give me:
- plot progression
- romance
- scheming
- kissing
- murder
- chaos
I don’t care. 😂
Just keep moving.
Once I feel like I’m waiting around for a predictable misunderstanding or trust collapse, my attention starts packing its suitcase.
And around Episode 8?
It left. 🧳😂
🎬 Full Spoiler Ending — Researched After Dropping
Happy Ending ❤️
Because I dropped the drama around Episode 8, I researched the finale instead of pretending I watched it.
The time-loop mystery is ultimately resolved.
Shen Zhili and Su Chenche are able to confront the larger threat behind what has been happening and break the repeating time loop.
The main couple survives.
They reconcile.
They remain together.
And the final romantic status goes beyond some vague:
“Maybe they’ll be together someday.”
Marriage/wedding plans are explicitly part of their ending.
So for anybody who only wants to know whether this thing is going to destroy them at the end:
✅ Main couple survives
✅ Main couple reconciles
✅ Main couple ends together
✅ Time loop is broken
✅ No tragic ending
✅ No ambiguous main-couple ending
✅ Marriage/wedding plans are explicit
This is a clear Happy Ending for Shen Zhili and Su Chenche.
Would knowing all of that have made me finish the drama?
…
Probably not. 😂
Because the ending was not my problem.
The ROAD to the ending was my problem.
I could already see the deception → discovery → distrust arc coming, and apparently my patience looked at the remaining episodes and said:
Absolutely not. 😂
🌸 What Happens to Ye Qianqian? — Researched
For anyone concerned about the fiancée/engagement situation:
Ye Qianqian does NOT end up with Su Chenche.
Research into the later story shows her paired with Hua Jiuye instead.
So she is not the final romantic threat to the main couple.
Thank you, drama. 😂
⭐ Final Thoughts
Shameless Lover wasn’t bad.
That is why I’m giving something I dropped a fairly generous:
⭐ 3.5/5
The premise was interesting.
The leads had chemistry.
The time-loop setup gave the drama something fun to work with.
And after researching what happens later, I can see that the overall story does eventually give the main couple a real romantic resolution and a happy ending.
But the romance ran directly toward one of my biggest pet peeves:
hidden motive + deception + inevitable trust collapse.
Then it added the Ye Qianqian engagement/fiancée mess on top.
My patience packed its tiny historical-drama suitcase. 🧳😂
Could I have continued watching and eventually gotten the happy ending?
Yes.
Did I want to sit through the route they took to get there?
Nope. 😂
