About these assessments

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

My Review

I watched all 36 episodes of Shine on Me, and this drama somehow proved that I am capable of complaining when a couple has too little conflict. 😂

Yes, I know.

This is coming from the same person who is constantly begging C-dramas to stop breaking couples up over stupid misunderstandings.

But hear me out. 😭

Nie Xiguang and Lin Yusen actually have the kind of relationship I normally ask for. Once the romance gets going, they communicate, support each other, and behave like two adults who genuinely like being together.

There is no ridiculous revolving door of breakups. No evil woman successfully separating them every six episodes. No endless hot-and-cold nonsense.

And apparently…I still need a little chaos. 😂

The problem isn't really the romance.

The romance is probably the strongest part of the entire drama.

The problem is that the rest of the plot sometimes feels surprisingly shallow.

A huge amount of the later story revolves around the solar-energy industry, company projects, photovoltaic development, bids, meetings, budgets, and people discussing work.

I appreciate the fact that these characters actually have careers instead of spending 36 episodes staring romantically out of windows.

But there were definitely moments where I felt like I had accidentally enrolled in Solar Panel Management 101. 😭😂

I support renewable energy.

I just don't necessarily need an orientation course with my romance.

The workplace material becomes even more noticeable later because there isn't enough other conflict balancing it out. Once the main relationship is secure, many of the obstacles are solved fairly smoothly.

And that is where I started getting bored.

Which is hilarious because normally I am screaming:

“LEAVE THE COUPLE ALONE!”

Then this drama leaves the couple alone and apparently I go:

“…okay but can SOMETHING happen?” 🤦‍♀️😂

I have learned something about myself.

I don't need relationship conflict.

I need plot conflict.

Those are apparently two very different things. 😂

THE EARLY COLLEGE STORY

The university portion also drags in places because Nie Xiguang spends a LOT of emotional energy on Zhuang Xu.

Her old crush is important because it shows the difference between immature, uncertain love and the stable relationship she eventually develops with Lin Yusen.

I understand the purpose.

I just did not need quite so much of it. 🙄

There are sections where the plot feels repetitive because Xiguang is still processing feelings connected to Zhuang Xu while the person I actually want her with is standing right there being wonderful.

MOVE ALONG, MA'AM. 😂

LIN YUSEN AND NIE XIGUANG ❤️

This couple is adorable.

Song Weilong and Zhao Jinmai have really natural chemistry together, and once Lin Yusen falls for her, that man is GONE.

He is patient with her.

He supports her.

He doesn't pressure her into immediately dating him when she admits that she hasn't completely moved on from her old feelings.

He supports her professionally instead of turning her career into some weird competition.

And he actually behaves like a grown man who likes the woman he is dating.

Imagine that. 😭❤️

Their relationship is refreshingly stable once they get together.

The drama doesn't suddenly invent a ridiculous breakup just because the writers realize there are still episodes left.

THANK YOU.

THE KISSING 🔥

Now we need to discuss one of this drama's greatest contributions to society.

THE KISSING SCENES.

🔥🔥🔥

These are not those C-drama kisses where two people gently press their lips together and remain completely motionless like somebody yelled “FREEZE!”

These people actually KISS.

Song Weilong and Zhao Jinmai have excellent physical chemistry, and once the romance finally reaches that stage, the drama lets them behave like two people who are genuinely attracted to each other.

The later married-couple intimacy is especially good.

So while I may have been mentally wandering away during some of the photovoltaic meetings, the romance certainly knew how to bring me back. 😂

WHAT BORED ME

This is where my 3.5 comes from.

The drama is pleasant, but sometimes it is too pleasant.

There are stretches dominated by:

  • workplace meetings
  • solar-energy projects
  • bidding and business discussions
  • photovoltaic-development details
  • repetitive career material
  • Xiguang's lingering emotional baggage involving Zhuang Xu
  • problems that never become especially threatening

Nothing is necessarily bad.

It just sometimes feels like the drama doesn't have enough narrative weight outside the romance.

The characters are nice.

The relationship is healthy.

The careers are realistic enough.

Everybody is growing.

Wonderful.

But every now and then I needed somebody to steal a company seal or fake their death or uncover a secret basement or SOMETHING. 😂

Apparently healthy communication cannot carry 36 episodes by itself.

Who knew? 😭

THE ENDING ❤️

The ending is VERY happy.

Lin Yusen and Nie Xiguang don't just vaguely stand somewhere staring at each other while inspirational music plays.

We actually get payoff.

They marry.

The story later shows them still happily married.

They have a daughter.

Their careers continue.

And they are obviously still completely in love.

There is even more romantic affection after marriage, which I appreciate because C-dramas sometimes act like marriage means romance has officially been cancelled. 😂

Not here.

This is a proper Happy Ending for the main couple.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Shine on Me is a strange one for me because I liked the couple considerably more than I liked the actual plot.

The romance is healthy. ❤️

The chemistry is great.

The kissing scenes are AMAZING. 🔥

Lin Yusen is patient, supportive, and devoted.

The relationship is stable.

And the ending actually gives us the romantic payoff.

But the story itself sometimes feels too shallow and too safe.

The solar-energy workplace plot dragged for me, some of the early Zhuang Xu material could have been shorter, and later episodes occasionally lose momentum because the main couple is already doing perfectly fine.

And apparently this drama taught me the difference between two very important things:

I don't want stupid couple conflict.

I still want an interesting plot. 😂

Give me corporate sabotage.

Give me revenge.

Give me a crazy aunt hiding documents inside a wall.

Just please stop explaining photovoltaic technology to me. 😭😂

Final Rating: 3.5/5

Cute couple. Fantastic kisses. Healthy relationship.

Could have used considerably fewer solar panels. 😂
