β οΈ ANIMAL WARNING FIRST: There is a scene involving a black dog being killed off-screen for its blood, which is then used as part of a blood-related scheme. I hated this. π‘ There are also horses shown surrounded by fire/in a dangerous fire scene. I am not claiming the real animals were harmed during filming, but the imagery is there. If animal harm bothers you, be warned.
Okay. Now that I have gotten THAT out of the way...
Spring Over Phoenix Pond is one of those dramas where I can point to a bunch of things I normally like and yet still sit here going:
WHERE IS MY ROMANCE?! π
Because apparently we had time for revenge, evil relatives, fake daughters, poisons, attempted framing, political scheming, rebellion, hidden evidence, murder plots, and approximately seventeen thousand people trying to ruin Qi Yuan's life...
β¦but kissing?
Suddenly everybody is BUSY. ππ
The Plot
Qi Yuan grew up as a butcher's daughter, only to discover that she is actually the true daughter of a noble household who was switched at birth.
Naturally, because this is a C-drama and happiness would apparently violate several laws of television, the fake daughter and various members of the family make her life absolutely miserable.
In her first life, Qi Yuan eventually becomes Xiao Yunting's hidden guard. The two fall in love and make it all the way to their wedding β and then everything goes straight to hell when Prince Qi attacks.
Qi Yuan dies.
Xiao Yunting dies.
And then...
SURPRISE. ROUND TWO. π
They are both reborn with their previous memories intact.
At least this part I liked, because it saves us from watching one person remember everything while the other wanders around clueless for fifteen episodes.
Qi Yuan knows exactly who wronged her.
Xiao Yunting knows exactly what happened before.
And this time they basically decide:
Fine. Everybody can catch these hands. ππ₯
Is the plot clichΓ©?
Absolutely.
We have:
- rebirth
- revenge
- switched-at-birth true heiress
- evil fake heiress
- horrible relatives
- scheming stepmother
- prince politics
- attempted forced marriage
- palace rebellion
I have seen pieces of this plot about 900 times.
But honestly? That wasn't what bothered me.
Sometimes clichΓ©s are clichΓ©s because they are FUN. π
Give me a smart woman coming back with a list of enemies and a functioning memory and I will still sit down.
Qi Yuan β FINALLY, A WOMAN WITH A BRAIN π
This was easily one of my favorite things about the drama.
Qi Yuan is not easy to bully.
THANK YOU.
She comes back knowing exactly what happened to her before, and she actually USES that information.
People try to set her up?
She sees it coming.
People try to humiliate her?
She flips it back on them.
People underestimate her because of how she grew up?
Big mistake. π
She is strategic, capable, observant, and willing to defend herself.
She isn't standing around crying while everybody takes turns ruining her life.
She responds.
And sometimes she responds with interest. π
This is exactly the kind of female lead I like.
Zhu Lilan also works really well in these roles. She has that composed-but-dangerous look where you can believe Qi Yuan is calmly calculating how badly somebody just screwed themselves. πβ€οΈ
Xiao Yunting β Supportive Prince Mode Activated
Xiao Yunting is much better in the second life because he isn't there trying to dominate Qi Yuan's revenge story.
He supports it.
He knows what happened.
He knows what she suffered.
And instead of going, "Woman, revenge is dangerous, stay home," he's basically:
Need a knife? Here. πͺπ
He protects her when necessary, helps clear obstacles, backs her political moves, and eventually works with her against Prince Qi.
That part of their relationship is actually very healthy.
He doesn't need her to become helpless so he can feel useful.
She does her thing.
He does his thing.
And when needed, they combine forces and ruin somebody's entire week. π
I approve.
The Romance β HELLO??? ANYBODY HOME??? π
Here is where the drama lost points for me.
These two already loved each other in their previous life.
They are reunited.
They both remember.
They trust each other more this time.
They work together.
They eventually marry.
THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A ROMANCE GOLD MINE.
Instead, the drama spends much more time on revenge and political plotting than actually letting the couple be romantic.
πππ
I wanted:
- more flirting
- more affection
- more couple scenes
- more kissing
- more "we survived two lifetimes, now come here" energy
What I got was a lot of:
"We must expose the conspiracy."
Okay.
BUT KISS FIRST. ππ
The chemistry isn't the problem so much as the amount of romantic material they are actually given.
The relationship itself is stable and functional.
I just wanted WAY more of it.
The Kissing β I HAVE A COMPLAINT π
Not enough.
That's it.
That's the complaint. π
For a drama built around TWO PEOPLE WHO LOVED EACH OTHER SO MUCH THAT THEIR FIRST LIFE ENDED IN TRAGEDY...
I expected significantly more romantic payoff.
The kissing is sparse enough that it never became one of those romances where I was kicking my feet and replaying scenes.
And you know me.
If I finish a romance drama and can't immediately remember multiple kisses?
We have a problem. ππ
The Revenge
This is probably the actual main course of the drama.
Qi Yuan goes through the people who destroyed her previous life one by one.
The fake heiress gets exposed.
The stepmother loses power.
The family secrets come out.
Prince Qi's schemes eventually collapse.
The political conspiracy gets dealt with.
Basically, the drama understands one very important rule:
If you're going to give me terrible villains, PLEASE let me watch them suffer consequences. π
And it does.
That part was satisfying.
The Family Drama
Qi Yuan's family situation is exactly the kind of nonsense you would expect from this genre.
She is the REAL daughter and somehow everybody behaves like her existence is the inconvenience.
Sir.
YOUR CHILD WAS SWITCHED.
Maybe direct your anger toward the people responsible instead of the daughter who literally had nothing to do with it?! π€¦ββοΈπ
Thankfully, Qi Yuan does not spend the whole drama begging these people to love her.
That's important.
I cannot stand watching a supposedly strong FL repeatedly chase approval from relatives who treat her like garbage.
Qi Yuan eventually establishes her own position and forces people to deal with her on HER terms.
Much better.
The Ending β€οΈ
Clear Happy Ending.
And yes, the main couple is together.
After Prince Qi's rebellion is defeated and the major enemies are punished, Xiao Yunting chooses not to stay buried in the fight for political power.
He gives up excess military authority and returns to a quieter life with Qi Yuan.
They finally get what their first life didn't allow them to have:
peace together.
No reincarnation cliffhanger.
No "maybe they meet again someday."
No one standing on a mountain staring into the distance while I scream at the television.
They are alive, together, and married.
THANK YOU. πβ€οΈ
I just wish the drama had spent more time actually showing me the ROMANCE before getting there.
