Another Zhang Linghe drama that I apparently watched and then immediately placed into some hidden storage compartment in my brain because I remembered the basic premise and the twist…and not a whole lot else. 😂
But I DO remember thinking the whole second-life setup was really cool.
🔄 Everybody Gets Another Chance Apparently
Li Rong and Pei Wenxuan were married for about twenty years in their first life, but their marriage completely fell apart because of politics, distrust, misunderstandings, and basically decades of refusing to communicate like normal people.
Then they both die believing the other one had something to do with it.
And suddenly — surprise! — they're eighteen again. 😂
They both remember their previous life, realize the other remembers too, and basically decide:
Okay. Let's try this disaster again, but maybe slightly less terribly this time.
They marry each other again, initially more as allies than as some grand romantic reunion, and start trying to prevent all the horrible things they know are coming.
I actually really liked that concept.
👀 And Then Su Rongqing Remembers Too?!
THIS was probably my favorite twist.
At first, the drama makes it seem like Li Rong and Pei Wenxuan are the special ones who came back with memories.
NOPE.
Su Rongqing remembers too. 😭
And he actually returned with his memories before they did.
That explains SO MUCH about why he's behaving the way he is and why he keeps strategically interfering with things.
In his previous life, his entire family was destroyed, his parents were executed, his brother died, and Su Rongqing himself suffered horribly. So when he gets another chance, he becomes obsessed with preventing the same future from happening again.
Unfortunately, his solution eventually becomes:
I will save everyone by manipulating absolutely everything.
Sir. 🤦♀️
I liked that the three of them weren't simply trying to recreate their old lives. They remembered the same history but reacted to that trauma completely differently.
Pei Wenxuan's biggest regret was losing Li Rong.
Li Rong's second chance forces her to reconsider how she treated the people around her.
Su Rongqing is basically consumed by preventing the destruction of his family.
That was actually a really good contrast.
❤️ Li Rong & Pei Wenxuan
What I liked about their relationship is that they're basically an old divorced married couple trapped inside the bodies of ridiculously attractive young people. 😂
They already know each other's habits.
They already know exactly how to annoy each other.
They have twenty years of emotional baggage.
And underneath all that resentment, there were obviously still feelings that neither one dealt with properly the first time around.
Pei Wenxuan is also another Zhang Linghe character who spends an unreasonable amount of time suffering because the woman he loves refuses to make his life easy. 😂
Their second marriage starts out as more of a strategic partnership, but gradually they actually confront what went wrong in their original marriage.
And THAT part of the story worked for me much more than a normal misunderstanding plot because these aren't two people having one stupid argument.
These people screwed up an entire TWENTY-YEAR MARRIAGE.
They needed therapy.
Instead they got reincarnation. 😂
Close enough.
😭 But I Got Bored
Here's the problem.
I remember liking the concept way more than I remember loving the actual drama.
There is a LOT of court politics.
Political factions.
Family alliances.
Power struggles.
More political conversations.
More plans.
More people discussing other people's plans.
And somewhere along the way my attention span said:
Absolutely not.
So yes, I skipped some parts. 😂
I don't remember exactly which episodes anymore, but there were definitely sections where I started jumping ahead because I wanted the story to MOVE.
The drama had enough interesting material that I finished it, but it did not have me glued to every single scene.
👑 Li Rong
I liked Li Rong.
She's intelligent, politically capable, experienced, and definitely not some helpless princess waiting for everyone else to solve her problems.
She also isn't magically emotionally perfect just because she's been given another chance.
Her biggest problem is actually letting herself trust people.
She spent decades operating inside a political system where everyone had an agenda, so even in the new timeline she has trouble separating genuine love from political calculation.
That made sense to me.
It could also be frustrating. 🙄
Because Pei Wenxuan is basically standing there screaming internally:
WOMAN I LOVE YOU.
And Li Rong is analyzing seventeen political possibilities before acknowledging feelings exist. 😂
🥰 Zhang Linghe
Obviously Zhang Linghe was one of the reasons I watched this.
And LOOK.
Pei Wenxuan is handsome.
He's devoted.
He's jealous.
He's ridiculously emotionally attached to his wife.
Approved. 😂❤️
One of the big differences between his first and second lives is that this time he realizes power was never what he truly wanted.
He wanted her.
So much of his second chance becomes about repairing their relationship and giving Li Rong the kind of home and marriage they never managed to have the first time.
That part was cute.
💋 Romance & Chemistry
The chemistry was good, but I wouldn't rank this among my absolute favorite Zhang Linghe romances.
There is romance.
There are kisses.
They eventually behave like an actual married couple. 👀
But because so much screen time goes toward palace politics and Su Rongqing's storyline, the romance sometimes feels like it has to fight for attention.
They fully consummate their relationship around Episode 29, and Li Rong is pregnant later in the drama.
So there IS romantic payoff.
I just would have happily accepted approximately 40% less politics and 40% more Zhang Linghe being affectionate.
For research purposes, obviously. 😂
🙄 The Divorce Situation
There IS technically another divorce, but I wouldn't count this as the kind of stupid breakup that normally makes me rage.
Around Episodes 25–27, Su Rongqing's plotting creates political danger around Pei Wenxuan. Li Rong proposes divorce largely as a way of protecting him, and Pei Wenxuan eventually understands what she's doing and cooperates with the plan.
So:
Actual legal divorce? Yes.
“I don't love you anymore, goodbye forever” breakup? No.
They're still emotionally committed to one another.
That distinction matters because otherwise I would have been much more annoyed. 😂
💀 Su Rongqing
Su Rongqing is probably the most interesting character conceptually.
His second chance does NOT heal him.
It makes him more desperate.
He knows exactly how badly everything ended the first time, so he becomes increasingly determined to control events and prevent his family's destruction.
Eventually that turns him into one of the major antagonistic forces of the story.
And unlike Li Rong and Pei Wenxuan, who slowly learn from their previous mistakes, Su Rongqing keeps getting trapped by his fear of repeating the past.
His ending is tragic: Pei Wenxuan fatally wounds him during their confrontation, and Su Rongqing ultimately dies after setting the palace on fire.
Honestly, having all THREE of them remember the previous timeline made the entire premise more interesting than if it had only been the main couple.
👑 The Ending
Happy Ending for the main couple. ❤️
After everything settles, Li Chuan eventually leaves the throne and Li Rong becomes the ruler, while Pei Wenxuan serves beside her.
And yes — Li Rong and Pei Wenxuan are still together.
They even marry each other AGAIN.
These two have apparently decided one marriage per lifetime simply isn't enough. 😂
The bonus ending also shows them seven years later with two children, still married and still bickering like lunatics.
So there is absolutely no ambiguous “maybe they're together somewhere someday” nonsense.
They are together.
Married.
Children.
Still arguing.
Perfect. 😂
