About these assessments
My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.
A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL
My Review
The acting was GREAT. ❤️
That was easily one of the strongest things about The Road to Splendor for me.
Ding Yuxi and Deng Enxi are paired together again after Melody of Golden Age, and this is their second lead romantic drama pairing. You can tell they are comfortable acting opposite each other because Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun have a really natural rhythm together.
Somebody looked at those two after Melody of Golden Age and said, “Yes. Put them together again.”
I support this decision. 😂❤️
And thankfully, both of them actually have something to DO besides stand around looking pretty in expensive costumes.
Fu Tingyun starts as a noblewoman trapped by family reputation, marriage expectations, and ridiculous patriarchal rules. After she is falsely accused of having an affair, her own family basically decides the easiest solution is:
Her reputation is damaged? Welp. Guess she has to die. 🤦♀️
They try to poison her and quietly erase the problem.
Unfortunately for them, Fu Tingyun survives.
GOOD FOR HER. 👏😂
Her story becomes less about waiting for somebody to rescue her and more about rebuilding her life on her own terms.
And Zhao Ling is not some polished nobleman who was handed power because he was born into the correct family.
He begins as an illegal salt trader from a rough background. He is clever, ambitious, adaptable, morally gray when necessary, and VERY good at surviving.
Then he starts caring about Fu Tingyun.
And yeah.
He's DONE. 😂❤️
Their relationship begins because circumstances basically throw them together and tell them:
Congratulations. Try not to die.
They lie to each other. They bargain. They are suspicious of each other. Then little by little they become genuine partners.
That worked for me much better than instant love.
---
🔥 Chemistry & Romance
The chemistry is strong.
This is not one of those costume dramas with twelve makeout sessions hiding behind every curtain, though. 😭
The romance is more about:
- protecting each other
- surviving together
- trusting each other's judgment
- planning together
- little physical gestures
- emotional intimacy
- married-life affection
- behaving like actual partners
Their first real kiss does not happen until Episode 16, so the romantic buildup is definitely on the slower side.
But Episode 16 makes the feelings clear. Fu Tingyun tells Zhao Ling that she wants someone she can truly cherish and love, and he basically responds:
Excellent. Close your eyes. 😂❤️
And FINALLY we get the kiss.
There are only around three clearly documented kisses across the drama, so this is not the Kissing Olympics. 💋
The chemistry is stronger than the kiss quantity.
---
😭 FIVE YEARS?!
Then we get the thing I absolutely have to complain about:
FIVE. YEARS.
WHY. 😭🙄
Around Episode 18, Zhao Ling leaves with the military.
He and Fu Tingyun are then separated for approximately five years of story time.
Thankfully, this is NOT a breakup.
They:
- stay committed
- exchange letters
- continue loving each other
- do not replace each other
- do not pull the stupid “I'm leaving you for your own good” nonsense
So yes, I hate the LENGTH of the separation because five years is RUDE. 😭
But I would not put it in the same category as dramas where somebody overhears half of one conversation behind a tree and throws away an entire relationship.
This is a war/duty separation, not romantic stupidity.

💍 FINALLY, A PROPER WEDDING
Eventually Zhao Ling gives Fu Tingyun the proper marriage she deserves.
Around Episodes 24–25, the marriage becomes formalized, and Episode 25 gives us the real wedding. ❤️
This matters because their earlier fake-marriage arrangement was part of surviving and escaping danger.
The real wedding is different.
He chooses her.
She chooses him.
Their families and political circumstances are finally forced to recognize it.
And Zhao Ling makes sure Fu Tingyun's mother gets to be part of the wedding instead of letting her awful father completely control the situation.
FINALLY. 😂❤️
Episode 26 continues the bridal-chamber/wedding-night portion and gives us actual married-life sweetness.
Thank you.
I waited long enough. 😂

🙄 Episode 32 — No, I Am NOT Calling This a Breakup
Episode 32 gives them their biggest marital crisis.
By this point, politics, trauma, rank, secrecy, and everything they have survived have changed both of them.
Fu Tingyun reaches a point where she suggests that maybe they should end the marriage.
That sounds terrible.
BUT.
The marriage is never actually dissolved.
They do not complete a divorce.
They do not spend episodes dating other people.
They do not start a prolonged breakup arc.
Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun reconcile within Episode 32 itself.
So my classification is:
No completed breakup.
It is a short marriage crisis / divorce suggestion / emotional separation, resolved within the same episode.
I refuse to call every dramatic conversation a breakup. 😂
---
🌸 Ending — HAPPY ENDING
Does The Road to Splendor Have a Happy Ending?
Yes. The Road to Splendor / 花开锦绣 has a clear Happy Ending for the main couple. Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun survive.
They remain married.
They remain together.
The final family outcome includes their daughter.
Zhao Ling ultimately chooses his life with Fu Tingyun over endlessly chasing more political power/status.
There is no final breakup or unresolved separation.
No:
- reincarnation
- ambiguous reunion
- permanent death
- fake-death ending
- open-ended romance
- “maybe they meet again someday” nonsense
Alive. Married. Together. Parents.
THANK YOU. 😂❤️

⭐ Final Rating: 4/5
I really enjoyed Ding Yuxi and Deng Enxi's acting here.
Seeing them paired again after Melody of Golden Age works because they already have that natural comfort with each other, and both of them get enough emotional material to actually show what they can do.
The romance is not super kiss-heavy, and that five-year separation is absolutely going in my complaint file 😭, but the relationship itself is solid.
Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun feel like partners.
They survive together, grow together, choose each other, marry properly, weather a serious marital crisis without turning it into a stupid prolonged breakup, and get a genuinely happy family ending.
Great acting + strong chemistry + capable FL + devoted ML + proper marriage + daughter + clear HE = 4/5. 🌸❤️

🔎 Reality Check — The “Chastity Tonic”
The story uses an arsenic-containing “Chastity Tonic” as an attempt to poison Fu Tingyun and harm her reproductive health.
Inorganic arsenic is highly toxic. The World Health Organization describes acute poisoning with vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea, followed by neurological symptoms and potentially death. Long-term exposure can also affect cardiovascular health. Reproductive-toxicology research describes possible damage to reproductive function, with mechanisms and effects varying across the evidence.
The drama’s neatly targeted fertility-destroying potion is a dramatization. Those sources do not establish a predictable, selective sterilizing effect; real poisoning can cause severe injury or death.
Verdict: The arsenic danger is real; the conveniently targeted “sterilizing tonic” effect is dramatized.
