About these assessments

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

My Review

MY HUSBAND IS HERE! 😭❤️

And apparently that was enough to get me through an entire drama with basically zero romance. 😂

The Vendetta of An is absolutely not one of my usual romance-heavy C-dramas. Cheng Yi plays Xie Huai’an, a ridiculously intelligent strategist who has spent years preparing revenge against the people responsible for destroying his family.

He returns to Chang’an and basically starts moving everybody around like pieces on a giant chessboard.

This drama is historical suspense, revenge, and political strategy first. Romance is basically nonexistent.

Apparently I watched 28 episodes of men plotting against other men because Cheng Yi was involved. 🤦‍♀️😂

Cheng Yi / Xie Huai’an ❤️

Listen.

Husband.

That is my contribution to this section. 😂

Okay, not entirely.

Xie Huai’an is actually a great role for Cheng Yi because he is not playing the typical romantic historical-drama hero. He is calculating, patient, observant, and constantly thinking several moves ahead of everybody else.

And unlike half the historical dramas I watch, he does not suddenly become stupid because somebody is pretty. 😂

His entire emotional center is revenge, his family, his allies, and eventually protecting Chang’an.

He has no official love interest and no romance storyline.

Honestly, that probably helped the drama. Trying to shove a random romance into the middle of all this scheming would have felt weird.

The Plot 👀

The whole thing is basically:

Xie Huai’an: I have a plan.

Everyone else: We stopped his plan!

Xie Huai’an: That was part of the plan.

😂😂😂

He has spent years preparing revenge after his family was massacred, particularly against Yan Fengshan.

He gathers allies and starts dismantling the forces threatening Chang’an while manipulating several competing factions at the same time.

Eventually, the story becomes bigger than his personal revenge. Protecting Chang’an and its people becomes more important than simply killing everyone he hates.

That part I actually liked because it gives Xie Huai’an more depth than just ANGRY REVENGE MAN™.

The Romance ❤️

What romance?

😂

Seriously:

  • Xie Huai’an has no love interest.
  • No confession.
  • No kiss.
  • No dating.
  • No marriage.
  • No romantic ending.

So if somebody starts this expecting Cheng Yi to stare emotionally at a woman for 28 episodes:

Wrong drama.

He is staring emotionally at revenge and political strategy. 😭

The Ending 👀

The ending gets a little tricky because the drama deliberately plays with Xie Huai’an's apparent death.

He goes into the final confrontation badly injured and triggers an explosion inside the grain warehouse that kills Wu Zhongheng.

For a moment, the story makes it look like Xie Huai’an sacrificed himself too.

But he survives.

The finale later reveals that Cen Weizong rescued Xie Huai’an and secretly imprisoned him, leaving him alive at the end.

So I classify the ending as:

⚖️ Open / Bittersweet Ending

The main conflict is resolved and Chang’an survives, but Xie Huai’an does not exactly ride off happily into the sunset.

He ends the drama alive but imprisoned, with his future unresolved.

And because there is no main romance, there obviously is not a main-couple romantic ending to judge.

🔎 Reality Check

There is no major real-world medical, legal, scientific, psychological, or historical-accuracy issue in this review that needs a separate factual deep dive.

The drama relies heavily on elaborate strategic plotting and characters anticipating one another’s plans several moves ahead. That is a storytelling convention rather than something that needs a formal realism correction.

Final Thoughts

This is definitely outside my normal lane because there is literally no romance, but somehow I still finished all 28 episodes.

Gee.

I wonder why.

CHENG YI. 😂❤️

I liked it enough to give it a 3.5/5, but apparently not enough for my brain to retain every political scheme these people came up with. 😭

It is much more about revenge, strategy, loyalty, power, and protecting Chang’an than relationships.

If you're watching specifically for Cheng Yi and like intelligent revenge stories, there is plenty here.

If you're watching for kissing?

Girl, leave. Nothing is happening. 😂

⭐ 3.5/5

Finished • Historical Revenge/Suspense • No Main Romance • Open/Bittersweet Ending
