Okay, this one was on point. I loved this show. 😂❤️
The premise already had me: Feng Ruoyao is the ridiculously powerful ruler of the demon realm, sees the gorgeous Immortal Lord Mo Chenyuan, decides she wants him, kidnaps him and basically tries to make him her husband.
Except there is one tiny problem with the whole “kidnapping” situation:
HE DOESN’T WANT TO LEAVE. 😂
This man is completely capable of escaping, spends about 100 years hanging around the demon realm, and when Feng Ruoyao eventually wants him to go home, he basically goes, nah, I’m good here.
Sir.
At that point you are no longer a prisoner.
You have moved in. 😭😂
And yes, this is Yu Xuanchen, one of the men who earned himself official Husband status. 👀🔥
❤️ The Main Couple
What makes this work for me is that the romance is mutual.
Feng Ruoyao may be the loud, direct one who basically screams I WANT THAT ONE, but Mo Chenyuan is absolutely not some unwilling victim of her affection. 😂
He is quietly just as gone for her.
They protect each other. They flirt. They bicker. They repeatedly choose each other.
And most importantly, the drama doesn't spend 22 episodes pretending they don't have feelings.
Mo Chenyuan gives off that calm, elegant immortal-lord energy while internally apparently being like:
Yes, this demon woman. I will keep her. 😂❤️
🔥 Chemistry, Kissing & Skinship
Chemistry: very good.
Kissing: good.
Skinship: good.
For a short xianxia, this actually gives us romantic payoff instead of making us survive entirely on longing glances and one accidental forehead touch. 🙄
There are real kisses, embracing and actual established-couple affection.
So yes.
They actually behave like two people who love each other.
What a concept! 😂
And then there is THAT scene where Mo Chenyuan tells her she smells good and she casually informs him that she hasn't bathed in THREE MONTHS.
Sir.
NO SHE DOES NOT. 😭🤢😂
Forget demons. Forget immortals. Forget ancient magical artifacts.
Somebody locate a bathtub.
😂 Feng Ruoyao
I really liked having a female lead who is powerful, straightforward and completely capable of going after what she wants.
She is literally a demon ruler and phoenix.
She doesn't stand around waiting for somebody to save her every five minutes.
She can also be absolutely ridiculous, which makes her much more fun.
I particularly enjoyed that she writes romantic stories about herself and Mo Chenyuan and actually makes money from them. 😂
At one point the women basically demand more sweetness and less angst from her stories.
Ladies, SAME. 😭
👀 Mo Chenyuan
Mo Chenyuan is exactly the kind of ML who gets me.
Powerful? ✅
Protective? ✅
Devoted? ✅
Secretly down horrendous while acting composed? ✅
Yu Xuanchen's face? VERY IMPORTANT BONUS. ✅😂🔥
I especially liked that his feelings aren't some last-minute realization.
So when she thinks she's aggressively pursuing this cold immortal lord...
Girl.
He has been playing the long game. 😂
🌙 The Mortal Tribulation
The middle section sends them into the mortal world as Yin Moting and Lu Chenxi, giving us basically another version of their romance.
They marry there, deal with political scheming, jealous villains, war, misunderstandings and people desperately trying to destroy their relationship.
Some of the mortal-world scheming gets messy, because apparently immortals cannot simply undergo a tribulation without everybody around them becoming completely unhinged. 🤦♀️
But I liked seeing their relationship survive another lifetime instead of the story turning their romance into endless hot-and-cold nonsense.
😭 About That Ending...
Yes, it is a Happy Ending — but there is a BIG separation before it.
And this needs to be said because simply writing “happy ending ❤️” would be a LIE OF OMISSION. 😂
Mo Chenyuan sacrifices himself while saving Feng Ruoyao and disappears.
Then the drama pulls the classic xianxia nonsense where apparently three centuries are an acceptable waiting period.
Feng Ruoyao raises their daughter, Mo Xiaofeng, without him for:
300 YEARS.
THREE.
HUNDRED.
YEARS.
Xianxia writers treat centuries the way the rest of us treat a long weekend. 😭
Thankfully, Mo Chenyuan comes back.
Feng Ruoyao arrives with their daughter, he appears, and the three of them finally reunite as a family.
So the main couple absolutely ends up together. ❤️
That reunion saves it for me.
But I am still side-eyeing those 300 years. 👀😂
⭐ Final Thoughts
This is exactly the kind of short fantasy romance that knows it does not have 40 episodes to waste on people refusing to communicate. 😂
Give me a demon queen who kidnaps a hot immortal.
Give me an immortal who could escape but decides being kidnapped is actually rather convenient.
Give me mutual devotion, marriage, kissing, protecting each other, a baby, villains getting dealt with, and a real happy ending.
Just maybe...
Bathe before your immortal boyfriend starts complimenting your scent. 😭😂🤦♀️
Final Rating: 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Loved it. Great chemistry, mutual devotion, plenty of actual romance, and Yu Xuanchen being Yu Xuanchen. The 300-year xianxia nonsense is getting a VERY aggressive side-eye, but they end together and happy, so I will allow it. 😂❤️
