A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL
🌸 My Review
Twelve Letters came with a premise I actually wanted to follow: a mysterious mailbox connecting people across 35 years, damaged young people trying to survive in 1991, and people in 2026 uncovering what happened. Twelve episodes, a time-slip mystery, and a protective male lead? Fine. You have my attention.
I liked Tang Yixun and Ye Haitang’s emotional bond. Zhou Yiran and Wang Yinglu make their tenderness feel believable, especially when these two have so little safety anywhere else. But my rating is 3.5/5 — because of the ending. Yes, the main couple gets a happy outcome. I still wanted the drama to let me actually enjoy it.
💗 Two Young People Becoming Each Other’s Family
Yixun and Haitang are two young people failed by the adults around them. Haitang suffers severe abuse from her father, and Yixun repeatedly protects her. Their connection grows through protection, tenderness, tending injuries, domestic moments, and planning a future.
Around Episode 6, they promise to become family for each other. That commitment matters. Their relationship starts feeling domestic and emotionally committed even though nobody clearly gives it an official boyfriend/girlfriend label. Yixun works himself exhausted to help support her future, while Haitang stands up to her father, returns to school, and keeps trying to build a life beyond the abuse. They plan to leave Meiwan together.
This is understated romance. Strong emotional chemistry, devoted behavior, and becoming each other’s home. A proper kiss? None. A conventional romantic confession? None clearly established. Apparently the supernatural postal service can cross 35 years, but delivering one kiss was outside its service area. 😭
⏳ Episode 8 and the Original Timeline: PLEASE TALK TO HER
Then we reach the part that tests my patience. Yixun goes to prison. He cuts Haitang off because he believes that will protect her. She is eventually led to believe he died, and spends years grieving him. They remain separated for decades in the original timeline.
Later, he secretly watches her instead of simply speaking to her.
Sir. I understand sacrifice. But eventually you have crossed into PLEASE GO SPEAK TO THE WOMAN. 😭
I can appreciate his protective intentions and still be frustrated by the decision. Letting Haitang believe he was dead removes her ability to choose what she wants. She is grieving a man who is still alive. That is a lot of suffering to attach to “I did it for you.”
There is no formal breakup. Imprisonment, deliberate withdrawal, presumed death, and decades apart are the major separation and conflict in the original timeline. Calling it a breakup would flatten what actually happens.
💌 THE ENDING — HAPPY ENDING, WITH A MAJOR TIMELINE-RESET CAVEAT
Full spoilers: Tang Yixun and Ye Haitang are alive and together in the corrected timeline, preparing to leave Meiwan together. Marriage is not confirmed.
The finale changes the critical 1991 event. Yixun receives the warning in time, and police intervention changes what happens. That prevents the catastrophic original future: the prison, fake-death belief, and decades of separation no longer remain their final outcome.
So yes, this is a Happy Ending — with a major timeline-reset caveat. The main couple survives and has a future together. I am not classifying their ending as bittersweet, ambiguous, or open.
My problem is how little time the drama gives us to sit with that future. After making the characters and the audience endure decades of emotional suffering, it heavily rewrites/restructures the future timeline and leaves us with too little straightforward romantic epilogue.
I wanted to SEE the payoff. Show me Yixun and Haitang together afterward. What happened when they left? Did they marry? What became of their life together? And could Yu Nian and Shen Cheng please get clearer closure too?
I survived twelve letters. I deserved at least twelve more minutes of epilogue. 😭
The corrected outcome is happy. The amount of romantic closure I receive is still frustrating. Both things can be true.

Happy Ending — with a major timeline-reset caveat. Alive and together in the corrected timeline; preparing to leave Meiwan together. No formal breakup. Marriage not confirmed.
💗 Shen Zhiyi’s Drama Reality Check
Finished all 12 episodes. Full ending and relationship spoilers.
- 💕 Romance
- Subtle but emotionally central. More devotion/protection/family-building than conventional dating.
- 🔥 Chemistry
- Strong emotional chemistry.
- 💋 Kissing
- None. ZERO. 😭
- 🤗 Skinship
- Light. Hugs, leaning, tending injuries, protective physical closeness.
- 🌶️ Spiciness / Adult Intimacy
- None.
- 🚩 ML Red Flag
- Low overall. Yixun is extremely protective and devoted, but his decision to let Haitang believe he was dead removes her agency and is deeply frustrating.
- 👑 Female Lead Competence
- Strong. Haitang survives abuse, stands up to her father, returns to school, and keeps trying to build a future.
- ⏱️ Romance Timing
- Emotional romance develops early, but the relationship is never formally defined.
- ❤️🔥 Relationship Payoff
- Moderate. Strong emotional payoff but weak conventional romantic payoff: no kiss, no official dating label, no wedding, and very little corrected-timeline epilogue.
- 💔 Breakup
- No formal breakup.
- ⏳ Separation / Conflict
- Extreme in the original timeline: prison, fake death, and decades apart. The rewritten ending prevents this from remaining their final outcome.
- 💍 Final Relationship Status
- Together and alive in the corrected timeline. Planning to leave Meiwan together. Marriage not confirmed.
- 📖 Plot
- Strong time-slip mystery with emotional character writing. Timeline mechanics become complicated and the finale lacks enough direct closure.
- 🐾 Animal Harm
- No verified dog/cat harm. The orange cat apparently works for the supernatural postal service.
About these assessments
My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.
⭐ Why I Gave It 3.5/5
The strong premise, emotional character writing, Yixun’s devotion, Haitang’s resilience, and the leads’ emotional chemistry kept me invested. The quiet family-building moments worked for me even without conventional dating scenes.
But the original timeline puts them through enormous suffering, and the finale’s complicated reset gives me too little direct closure in return. No kiss, no official dating label, no confirmed marriage, and barely enough time to enjoy the corrected future. I wanted more of Yixun and Haitang’s life together and clearer closure for Yu Nian and Shen Cheng.
Final Rating: 3.5/5 · Finished · Happy Ending — with a major timeline-reset caveat.
Because of the ending. The mailbox delivered the warning. It apparently misplaced my epilogue. 😭
