I remembered Unveil: Jadewind as having a little bit of romance, and that is basically exactly what it has. 😂
This is first and foremost a historical mystery/crime drama about Li Peiyi and Xiao Huaijin investigating bizarre murders and palace cases while Li Peiyi also searches for the truth about what happened to her family years ago.
And honestly, the investigation partnership is probably the strongest part of their relationship.
Li Peiyi is the fighter and the one who will apparently throw her entire body into an investigation with absolutely zero concern for self-preservation. 🤦♀️ Xiao Huaijin is much calmer and more analytical, so they balance each other really well while solving cases.
Their relationship slowly develops through working together, trusting each other, protecting each other, and eventually dealing with secrets connecting their pasts.
❤️ The Romance
Yes, there is a real romance. No, there is not enough of it. 😂
It is a very slow burn.
For most of the drama, Li Peiyi and Xiao Huaijin feel more like partners with obvious growing feelings than an actual romantic couple.
The drama spends much more time on murder, corruption, revenge, creepy palace cases, and Li Peiyi's family tragedy.
There is also a rough patch when Li Peiyi discovers that Xiao Huaijin knew her as a child and had concealed information connected to the night her family was killed.
She reacts badly to the revelation, understandably, but this is not an actual breakup because they were not officially together yet.
They eventually reconcile.
Then the drama finally remembers:
OH YEAH. THESE TWO ARE SUPPOSED TO LIKE EACH OTHER. 😭
Xiao Huaijin finally openly admits his feelings later in the drama.
By around Episode 28, he makes it clear that he wants to marry her, she accepts, they receive an imperial marriage decree, and we FINALLY get the long-awaited kiss. 💋😂
So my vague memory of this being a drama with “slight romance” was actually pretty accurate.
Chemistry
Bai Lu and Wang Xingyue have chemistry, but the writing keeps it restrained for most of the drama.
This isn't one of those shows where I'm sitting there yelling:
KISS HER AGAIN!!! 🔥
because we'd be waiting until approximately the fall of the Tang Dynasty. 😭
There are romantic looks, concern, trust, devotion, and the whole I'll stand beside you while you recklessly almost get yourself killed again energy.
But the actual physical affection is pretty sparse.
The romance is cute when it finally gets there. I just wish the drama had given it more room to breathe.
Li Peiyi
I do like that Li Peiyi is genuinely capable.
She isn't standing around while Xiao Huaijin solves everything for her.
She's an experienced investigator, she's physically skilled, and she's usually the person charging directly into danger.
Sometimes WAY too directly into danger.
This woman literally uses herself as bait and gets herself buried alive in Episode 1. 😭
Ma'am. There had to be another way.
But I would rather have a FL who is occasionally too reckless than one who spends 34 episodes being helpless.
Xiao Huaijin
Xiao Huaijin is much quieter, but I liked the way his feelings develop.
He becomes protective of Li Peiyi without taking over her investigations or treating her like she's incapable.
He supports her search for the truth and ultimately chooses a future with her.
That kind of supportive ML works for me. ❤️
I just wish they had let the man romance her more.
The Mystery Side
This is really where the drama puts most of its energy.
There are multiple cases involving murders, corpses, palace conspiracies, eerie rituals, poisons, political corruption, and the larger mystery surrounding the massacre of Li Peiyi's family.
Some of the cases have almost horror-like imagery, especially early on.
I think that also explains my 3.5/5 pretty well.
It's interesting and stylish, the leads work well together, and there is enough romance for me to acknowledge that yes, technically, I was fed.
But I was not exactly given a banquet. 😂
🔎 Reality Check: The “Breath-Stopping Pill”
Early in the drama, Li Peiyi takes a drug that suppresses her vital signs enough to make her appear dead so she can survive being placed inside a coffin and buried.
Yeah...
Do not try that one at home. 😂
Real medicine has experimented with ideas similar to suspended animation, especially through extreme cooling and highly controlled emergency procedures.
But there is no simple pill that safely makes a healthy person appear dead, allows them to be buried in a coffin, and then lets them conveniently wake up afterward.
So Li Peiyi's magical death pill belongs firmly in C-drama science. 😂
