THE ROMANCE CHECK
Quick Answers
Relationship spoilers below.
- Does Veil of Shadows have a happy ending?
- Yes, but through a timeline reset/rewrite after major sacrifices.
- Do Lu Wuyi and Ji Ling end up together?
- They reconnect with renewed attraction in the rewritten timeline. Their original-timeline marriage is not presented as an untouched continuing marriage.
- Do Lu Wuyi and Ji Ling break up?
- No verified formal romantic breakup. Supernatural, death-related and timeline separations are tracked separately.
- When do they first kiss?
- Around Episode 13, within the supernatural/alternate-world relationship material.
- When do their feelings become explicit?
- Around Episode 19.
- Do they marry?
- Yes, around Episode 26 in the original timeline.
- Is there a major separation?
- Yes: extensive supernatural, sacrifice, death, memory and timeline-related separation.
- Does the ending reset the timeline?
- Yes. The world is rewritten/repaired after major losses.
- Do Wu Shiguang and Wu Wangyan reconnect?
- Yes, after the timeline reset, with blurred memories and their bracelet connecting them again.
- Why did Shen Zhiyi rate it 3/5?
- Too many romantic pairings and competing relationship threads dilute the focus. The problem is too much dispersed romance, not too little romance.
- Is there animal harm?
- No specific dog, cat, horse or ritual animal-harm scene was verified in the checked sources. Supernatural-creature violence is present; a full scene-by-scene audit was not performed.
A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL
🌸 My Review
WHY ARE THERE SO MANY COUPLES?! 😭
That is my biggest complaint about Veil of Shadows. I finished all 29 episodes, and my rating is 3/5. The problem is not that there is no romance. There is plenty of romance. The problem is that the drama keeps handing out CPs like party favors. 😂
There are two core romances, secondary romances, past-life and emotional pairings, alternate-timeline relationship material, and tragic connections. There are only 29 episodes! I wanted the central story and couples to have room to breathe, but there was always another relationship asking for my attention.
💕 The Main Romances
Lu Wuyi and Ji Ling have attraction, chemistry, kisses and commitment before the finale. Their first kiss is around Episode 13, their feelings become explicit around Episode 19, and they marry around Episode 26 in the original timeline. This is not a romance that waits until the final scene to begin.
Wu Shiguang and Wu Wangyan also have a substantial romantic story. That is part of my frustration: even the two major romances are competing for space, before we get to all the other emotional connections. Strong chemistry is welcome. A whole crowd of CPs is where I start losing patience. 😭
📖 The Plot
The supernatural mythology is interesting, but the story feels overcrowded. Hidden identities, past lives, altered memories and alternate timelines are already a lot to follow. Add all those pairings, and by the end I needed a relationship chart, genealogy chart, and possibly a corkboard with red string. 😂
🌌 Ending — Happy Ending with a Timeline Reset
Yes, this is a Happy Ending, but it comes through a timeline reset/rewrite. The original timeline does not simply arrive intact at a peaceful ending. Major sacrifices, deaths and losses happen first.
Lu Wuyi suffers a major sacrifice/disappearance, and Wu Wangyan also sacrifices herself. Ji Ling becomes part of the effort to alter time and repair the world. After the rewrite, Lu Wuyi and Ji Ling meet again, drawn toward one another. Wu Shiguang and Wu Wangyan also reconnect, with their bracelet linking them despite blurred memories.
That distinction matters. Their original-timeline marriage is around Episode 26; the finale gives them romantic reconnection in a rewritten world, with changed memories and continuity. I would not describe it as their original married life continuing untouched.
No verified formal romantic breakup is established for the principal couples. Being forced apart by supernatural events, sacrifice, death, memory complications or rewritten time is not the same thing as choosing to end a relationship.

Where the Principal Couples End Up
Happy Ending — timeline-reset/reconnection caveat. No verified formal romantic breakup for the two principal couples; very high supernatural separation/conflict.
💗 Shen Zhiyi’s Drama Reality Check
Finished all 29 episodes. Full relationship and ending spoilers.
- 💕 Romance
- High quantityTwo principal romances plus secondary, past-life and alternate-timeline pairings spread the attention widely.
- 🔥 Chemistry
- StrongThe principal pairings have strong chemistry; the number of competing couples is my bigger complaint.
- 💋 Kissing
- ModerateGenuine romantic kisses. First kiss around Episode 13; later intimacy and commitment around Episode 26.
- 🤗 Skinship
- ModerateHugs, protective contact, touching and closeness. Kissing is assessed separately.
- 🌶️ Spiciness / Adult Intimacy
- MildRomantic intimacy and marriage; kissing alone is not treated as adult intimacy.
- 🚩 ML Red Flag
- Low to ModerateThe principal romance is not fundamentally a toxic-ML story; supernatural identity and sacrifice complicate it.
- 👑 Female Lead Competence
- StrongThe central women make consequential choices and actively affect the supernatural story.
- ⏱️ Romance Timing
- GoodFirst kiss around E13, feelings explicit around E19, marriage around E26; romance develops before the finale.
- ❤️🔥 Relationship Payoff
- MixedKisses, declarations and marriage provide payoff, but deaths, sacrifice and the timeline rewrite disrupt continuity.
- 💔 Breakup
- No verified formal romantic breakupLu Wuyi and Ji Ling are forced apart by supernatural events, sacrifice and timeline changes. These are not voluntary romantic breakups.
- ⏳ Separation / Conflict
- Very HighSupernatural conflict, sacrifice, deaths, memory and body-identity complications, followed by timeline rewriting.
- 💍 Final Relationship Status
- Happy Ending through a rewritten/reset timelineThe principal couples reconnect after major losses. Lu Wuyi and Ji Ling meet again with renewed attraction; memories and continuity are affected. Their original-timeline marriage is not shown as an intact marriage carried through the reset.
- 📖 Plot
- Interesting but overcrowdedSupernatural mythology is interesting, but too many romantic and emotional pairings compete for 29 episodes.
- 🐾 Animal Harm
- No specific companion-animal harm verifiedNo dog, cat, horse or ritual animal-harm scene was identified in the checked sources. This is not a complete scene-by-scene clearance. Supernatural fox/dragon/demon beings suffer injury, death and sacrifice.
About these assessments
My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.
⭐ Final Thoughts
3/5. There is romance, chemistry and a positive ending with a very important reset caveat. But too many romantic pairings and competing relationship threads dilute the focus for me.
Please stop handing out CPs like party favors. There are only 29 episodes!
Everybody please stop dating. 😂
