About these assessments

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

My Review

I liked Wonderland of Love, but this is also one of those dramas where at some point I realized I was starting to mentally wander away. 😂

The good parts are REALLY good. The problem is that there are stretches where the politics, scheming, fighting over succession, and assorted people refusing to mind their own business just keep going… and going… and I started losing interest.

Still, Li Ni and Cui Lin kept pulling me back because these two are basically “What if we flirted while simultaneously trying to out-strategize each other on a battlefield?” 😂❤️

⚔️ The Plot

The strongest thing about this drama is easily the fact that BOTH leads are capable.

Li Ni isn’t the brilliant military commander while Cui Lin stands around looking decorative.

Absolutely not.

Cui Lin is also an excellent fighter, military commander, strategist, and tactician. She can read a battlefield, anticipate what Li Ni is planning, counter him, trick him, and occasionally make him look stupid. 😂

And Li Ni can do exactly the same thing to her.

THAT was fun.

Their early dynamic is basically:

Li Ni: I have devised the perfect strategy.

Cui Lin: Cute. I already figured it out.

Li Ni: 😐

Cui Lin: 😌

The martial arts are fun, but their battle of brains is what made the story most interesting to me. Neither person has to suddenly become incompetent so the other can look impressive. They actually feel like equals.

❤️ Li Ni & Cui Lin

Their chemistry is really good.

A huge part of why their relationship works is that Li Ni genuinely respects Cui Lin’s intelligence and strength. He doesn’t spend the entire drama trying to lock her in a room because WOMAN TOO DANGEROUS. 🙄

He knows exactly who she is.

She’s a soldier.

She’s a strategist.

She has responsibilities.

And that is part of why he loves her.

Cui Lin also doesn’t just become “the male lead’s girlfriend.” She has her own loyalty to her father, her army, and the people under her command.

There are several kisses throughout the drama, and the romance definitely gets physical enough that I did not feel like I watched 40 episodes just to receive one forehead pat. 😂🔥

There is even a rather memorable bathtub make-up scene later.

Thank you for your service, Xu Kai. 😂

🤦‍♀️ The Breakup Situation

Here is where I started getting annoyed.

There IS an actual breakup around Episode 29 after everything involving Cui Lin’s father pushing for Li Ni to become Crown Prince.

Li Ni feels like Cui Lin and her father have helped force him toward a life he never wanted, gets angry, asks for his keepsake back, returns hers, and basically goes:

WE ARE EVEN. GOODBYE.

Sir. 😑

Fortunately, this doesn’t become a ten-episode misery festival. They reconcile around Episode 31.

Later, when they marry, they also go through another period of anger because Cui Lin is devastated by the disbanding of the Cui Army.

They’re married, but their bridal chamber starts out more like:

❤️ Newlyweds ❤️

except with swords.

Very romantic. 😂

They eventually work through that too.

The OTHER painful separation comes near the end when Cui Lin is drugged into a fake-death state and Li Ni genuinely believes she has died.

That isn’t technically a breakup, but I still DID NOT LIKE IT. 😭

Watching him carrying her around, desperately trying to convince himself she might wake up, taking her back to Wonderland of Love, singing to her and sitting beside her…

NO.

I did not request emotional damage.

Thankfully the fake-death situation is relatively short onscreen and she wakes up.

🤡 Liu Chengfeng: Sir, Please Accept Rejection

Liu Chengfeng might be one of the most spectacular examples of a man who simply could not take a hint.

Cui Lin basically sees him as family.

Liu Chengfeng:

Perhaps if I commit several crimes and destabilize the country she’ll reconsider.

WHAT. 😭🤦‍♀️

This man goes from childhood companion to full-blown unhinged.

He lies.

He schemes.

He poisons people.

He tries to force a marriage.

He works with enemies.

He wants Li Ni dead.

And what made it even funnier was that I thought this man was dead more than once.

The first time, he sacrifices himself saving Cui Lin and everybody basically treats him like he’s gone.

Me: Well, that’s the end of Liu Chengfeng.

A few episodes later:

SURPRISE.

He survived and is back, ready to make even WORSE decisions. 😂

Then much later we get ANOTHER report that he died in prison and his body was taken away.

Me again: Okay. NOW he’s dead.

NOPE.

Every time I thought we had finally reached the end of his nonsense, he would reappear ready to act even crazier than before.

At some point his entire character started feeling like:

Liu Chengfeng has died.

Me: Oh thank God.

Liu Chengfeng has entered the chat.

Me: HOW?! 😭😂

At some point I stopped thinking, “Aw, unrequited love,” and started thinking:

SIR. SHE DOES NOT WANT YOU.

Move along.

He does eventually die for real near the end after helping save Cui Lin, so somewhere beneath approximately seventeen layers of insanity there was still a little humanity left.

But my goodness.

This entire situation could have been avoided with one simple concept:

ACCEPT THE FRIEND ZONE.

🎵 The Soundtrack

The soundtrack is AMAZING.

Like unnecessarily good. 😂❤️

The music fits the sweeping romantic-war atmosphere perfectly and really helps the bigger emotional scenes land, especially whenever the drama decides it would like to hurt my feelings for entertainment.

🎬 CGI & Cinematography

I also have to give this drama credit because it is really pretty to look at. ✨

The cinematography is gorgeous, especially the sweeping landscapes, battlefield scenes, horseback sequences, and the actual Wonderland of Love setting.

And the CGI was NICE.

Not “please don’t look directly at the background dragon because you may notice its pixels” CGI. 😂

The larger battle scenes and environmental shots actually felt cinematic and helped sell the scale of the story. The combination of the landscapes, lighting, costumes, action scenes, and CGI made the drama feel polished and expensive.

Even during the parts where the story was dragging and my attention was beginning to pack its bags, at least I could sit there thinking:

Well… this is very pretty. 😂✨

🐌 The Pacing

This is probably the biggest reason I’m staying at 3.5 instead of 4.

There were stretches where I was genuinely invested.

Battle plans? YES.

Li Ni and Cui Lin trying to outsmart each other? YES.

Romance? YES.

Liu Chengfeng repeatedly surviving long enough to make another terrible life choice? Apparently also yes. 😂

But there are also parts where I felt the story dragging.

Some of the political maneuvering and repeated palace problems went on long enough that I started losing interest. By that point I was mostly waiting for the plot to get back to something involving Li Ni and Cui Lin.

Forty episodes isn’t automatically a problem for me.

Forty episodes FEELING like forty episodes is the problem. 😂

🌸 Final Thoughts

Wonderland of Love had a lot going for it.

I loved that Li Ni and Cui Lin are both intelligent, highly trained fighters who understand military strategy. Their ability to challenge each other physically AND mentally is probably my favorite thing about the entire drama.

The chemistry is strong.

The romance gets actual payoff.

The soundtrack is gorgeous.

The cinematography and CGI are beautiful.

Li Ni is devoted.

Cui Lin is capable.

And the ending gives us marriage, children, AND the two of them eventually getting the peaceful border life they wanted.

But the pacing dragged in places, the political sections occasionally started testing my attention span, and I could have lived quite happily without some of the relationship angst.

Also Liu Chengfeng desperately needed somebody to hand him a pamphlet titled:

“She Said No: A Beginner’s Guide.” 🤦‍♀️😂

Preferably before he apparently discovered immortality.

Still, overall I enjoyed it.

⭐ 3.5/5

Good chemistry, two genuinely capable leads, gorgeous music and cinematography, nice CGI, an appropriately unhinged second male lead who apparently had nine lives, and a very satisfying happy ending — just with enough dragging and relationship drama to keep it from reaching the next level for me. ❤️⚔️✨
