THE ROMANCE CHECK

Quick Answers

Relationship spoilers below.

Does Kill Me Love Me have a happy ending?
No. Tragic Ending. Mei Lin and Murong Jinghe marry in Episode 32, but Mei Lin dies shortly afterward from Mo Vein poison. Murong Jinghe later becomes emperor, never remarries, keeps the harem empty, and eventually dies. Fantasy/rebirth imagery does not reverse their deaths.
Do Mei Lin and Murong Jinghe marry?
Yes, in Episode 32, but Mei Lin dies shortly afterward. They do not end alive together.
Do they break up?
Yes — Episode 22. Episode 12 is a pre-relationship parting, not a breakup. They reconcile around Episode 30.
When does the romance become real?
Mutual feelings, first real romantic kiss, and the relationship develop around Episode 18. Episode 1 has a strategic non-romantic kiss.

A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

🌸 My Review

I remembered correctly because yeah... the ending is not good. 😭

Kill Me Love Me starts with a really interesting setup: revenge, assassins, political schemes, a ruthless prince, and a female lead who has every reason to want him dead.

Mei Lin believes Murong Jinghe is responsible for the destruction of Qingzhou and trains for years to assassinate him.

Except the situation is MUCH messier than she realizes because Murong Jinghe is secretly connected to the organization that trained her in the first place. 👀

Their relationship goes from enemies and manipulation to working together, understanding each other, and eventually genuinely falling in love.

And then this drama apparently decides that happiness is illegal. 😭

Murong Jinghe & Mei Lin

Their romance has plenty of angst because Murong Jinghe is absolutely not starting this drama as anybody's healthy green-flag boyfriend. 😂

He manipulates Mei Lin, hides major truths from her, and his actions involving the Mo Vein poison ultimately become part of the reason she dies.

But he also falls VERY hard.

By the village arc, he is jealous, protective, taking care of her, cooking for her, sewing things for her, and basically already acting like her husband before either one wants to admit what's happening.

Their first genuinely romantic payoff comes around Episode 18 when they finally admit their feelings and kiss.

Unfortunately, happiness lasts approximately five minutes in C-drama time. 🙄

Murong Jinghe pushes Mei Lin away in Episode 22 because he believes separating from her is the only way to keep her alive.

They spend a significant portion of the later drama separated or emotionally estranged before finally reconciling around Episode 30.

JUST IN TIME FOR THE WRITERS TO DESTROY EVERYTHING. 😭

The Ending

💔 Tragic Ending.

There is no way I am calling this bittersweet just because they get married first.

By Episode 32, Mei Lin's Mo Vein poison has reached her heart. Murong Jinghe desperately searches for a way to save her, but she has very little time left.

So Mei Lin and Murong Jinghe finally marry.

Cute?

YES.

Does the drama let me enjoy it?

ABSOLUTELY NOT. 🤦‍♀️

Mei Lin dies shortly afterward while sitting beside Murong Jinghe.

Murong Jinghe survives her death and eventually becomes Emperor. He never remarries, leaves his harem empty, and spends years ruling before eventually dying as well.

The drama includes dreamy “what if they had met differently” / reunion-like imagery, but there is no confirmed present-timeline resurrection or literal reunion that reverses their deaths.

So for Shen Zhiyi purposes:

Mei Lin: dead. Murong Jinghe: eventually dead. Main couple alive and together at the end: NO.

💀 Thanks, writers.

I definitely understand why I gave this 3/5.

💗 Shen Zhiyi’s Drama Reality Check

Finished all 32 episodes. Full relationship and ending spoilers.

💕 Romance
Major part of the story; enemies-to-lovers with lots of angst.
🔥 Chemistry
Strong. Liu Xueyi and Wu Jinyan sell the dangerous enemies-to-lovers tension very well.
💋 Kissing
Good romantic payoff once the relationship develops.
🤗 Skinship
Good — hugging, caretaking, jealousy, carrying, hand-holding, and domestic couple moments.
🌶️ Spiciness / Adult Intimacy
Low to moderate. Plenty of tension and suggestive moments, but not especially explicit.
🚩 ML Red Flag
High. Manipulation, deception, poison, using Mei Lin as part of his plans, and making major decisions about her life without her consent.
👑 Female Lead Competence
Strong. Mei Lin begins as a skilled assassin and capable survivor.
⏱️ Romance Timing
Slow-to-mid development. Real romantic payoff arrives around Episode 18.
❤️‍🔥 Relationship Payoff
Mixed. They genuinely fall in love, reconcile, and marry — but the tragic ending destroys the long-term payoff.
💔 Breakup
Yes — Episode 22. Episode 12 does not count because they are not officially together yet.
⏳ Separation / Conflict
Significant. Later episodes include physical separation, political complications, emotional distance, and Mei Lin's fake death.
💍 Final Relationship Status
Married, but not alive together. Mei Lin dies; Murong Jinghe remains faithful to her and later dies.
📖 Plot
Revenge, political intrigue, assassination, war, hidden identities, redemption, and a LOT of suffering.
🐾 Animal Harm
No specific dog/cat harm verified for this review.
About these assessments

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

⭐ Final Rating

⭐ 3/5

Finished · Tragic Ending

They eventually fall genuinely in love, reconcile, and even get married — and then the drama kills Mei Lin anyway.

Murong Jinghe spends the rest of his life faithful to her before eventually dying himself.

So yes, my memory was right:

The ending is not good. 😭
