A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL
🌸 My Review
🌙 My Thoughts
Okay, the biggest reason this gets 3.5/5 from me is the acting.
I genuinely loved the acting in this drama.
Pan Yueming and Dylan Wang were fantastic together. Their mentor-apprentice relationship is basically the emotional backbone of the story, and both of them made these characters feel like actual people instead of detectives walking around explaining clues.
Dylan Wang especially surprised me here. Ran Fangxu is very different from the flashy romantic male leads I usually associate him with, and I liked seeing him play someone quieter, more idealistic, and increasingly worn down by the case.
Pan Yueming also gives He Yuanhang so much exhaustion, guilt, stubbornness, and grief that some scenes hurt without anyone needing to scream about it. 😭
The drama follows a disappearance case that begins years earlier and keeps resurfacing across different periods as the investigators try to figure out what actually happened.
And good LORD, everybody has secrets.
Every time the investigation uncovers another layer, apparently there is another layer underneath that one. 😂
🔎 The Mystery
This is definitely a crime drama first.
What initially looks like a disappearance grows into something much bigger involving murder, concealed identities, years of lies, manipulation, and people protecting secrets.
I liked how much of the mystery depends on old evidence being reconsidered instead of somebody magically producing the answer at the last second.
The multiple timelines can make the story feel slower and more complicated, though.
This is one of those dramas where you actually need to pay attention.
No folding laundry and coming back fifteen minutes later like:
“Wait, WHO IS THAT?” 😂
❤️ The Romance
There is romance between Ran Fangxu and Qiao Suqing, but anyone starting this expecting a Dylan Wang romance drama needs to lower those expectations immediately. 😭
Their relationship is a relatively small part of the story.
Around the middle portion of the drama, Ran's romantic interest becomes much clearer. He brings Qiao flowers and cake, and she admits that part of the reason she remained near the old apartment was because she hoped she might see him again.
Their feelings become genuine.
Which unfortunately makes everything that happens later MUCH WORSE.
Because naturally this drama said:
“Aw, look! They like each other.”
…and then immediately began preparing emotional violence. 🙄
Ending — SPOILERS
Ran Fangxu dies.
And yes, it is awful. 😭
He eventually discovers that Qiao Suqing has been hiding major information connected to the old case.
She intends to surrender after spending one final New Year's Eve with him.
But Xu Meng learns what is happening and sees Ran as a threat.
The events culminate in the road incident that kills him.
Years later, the full truth finally comes out.
Xu Meng receives the death penalty. Qiao Suqing receives life imprisonment.
He Yuanhang has spent years unable to fully accept Ran's death.
In the finale, after the case is finally solved, he emotionally says goodbye to Ran.
That gives He Yuanhang some closure, but it obviously does not magically undo what happened.
So I classify the overall drama as a:
🌗 Bittersweet Ending
Justice finally arrives and the case is solved.
But Ran and Qiao's romantic storyline?
💀 Tragic.
Completely tragic.
There is no secret romantic HE hiding in the bushes. 😭

Finished all 28 episodes. Full case, death and relationship spoilers.
- 💕 Romance
- Low. There is a meaningful romantic subplot, but this is absolutely a crime drama first.
- 🔥 Chemistry
- Good but understated. Ran and Qiao have a gentle emotional connection rather than huge romantic fireworks.

- 🤗 Skinship
- Low. Their relationship is much more emotional than physically affectionate.
- 🌶️ Spiciness / Adult Intimacy
- None.
- 🚩 ML Red Flag
- Very low. Ran is caring, compassionate, protective, and sometimes honestly too trusting for his own good.
- 👑 Female Lead Competence
- Strong. He Xiaohe becomes an important part of uncovering the truth.

- 🐾 Animal Harm
- No specific dog or cat harm is currently verified.
About these assessments
My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.
⭐ Final Rating: 3.5/5
⭐ 3.5/5
I loved the acting. Pan Yueming and Dylan Wang’s mentor-apprentice dynamic was especially effective, and their performances gave the mystery its emotional weight. This was much less romantic than my usual preference, and the romantic ending is painful, but the performances and mystery kept me invested.
