A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

🌸 My Review

Fate Chooses You gave me curses, reincarnation, bloodlines, cultivation politics, fake identities, memory loss, battles, sacrifices, and a couple who basically get married at the beginning…

…and somehow it could not give me ONE NORMAL KISS?! 😭

Lu Qianqiao and Xin Mei start off with one of the weirdest practical marriage arrangements imaginable. He is trying to survive the War Ghost curse and eventually become fully human, while she has her own awful fate hanging over her head. Naturally, what begins as something practical gradually becomes very real.

And I actually liked their relationship development.

They fight together, save each other, learn each other's secrets, get jealous, worry about each other, and slowly become genuine partners. Their feelings clearly develop before the finale, so this is not one of those dramas where the romance suddenly appears in the final ten minutes.

By around Episodes 23–24, they are openly thinking about a future together. Xin Mei is even willing to give up cultivation and live an ordinary life with him.

So yes, the romance EXISTS.

The physical romance, however?

WHERE IS IT?!

They technically get a “first kiss,” except the drama gives us a silhouette/shadow kiss.

Excuse me. 😭😂

These people survived curses, blood magic, assassinations, body reconstruction, battles, and approximately seventeen thousand cultivation disasters, and I am watching their kiss through shadow puppetry?!

The chemistry between Ren Jialun and Wang Herun still works because the emotional intimacy is there. Lu Qianqiao becomes protective and genuinely attached to Xin Mei, and I especially liked that Xin Mei is not some useless decorative immortal standing around waiting to be rescued.

She fights. She investigates. She makes decisions. She throws herself directly into danger.

My kind of female lead. 😂

But for a romance built across 40 episodes, I needed more payoff.

And then the finale decides I haven't suffered enough.

In Episode 38, Lu Qianqiao sacrifices all of his memories to become the perfect War Ghost and save everyone. He walks away without remembering Xin Mei.

Sir.

We already barely got a kiss and now you don't even remember your wife?! 😭

The story then jumps ahead approximately one year. Xin Mei keeps searching for him, eventually finds him again at the ferry in Episode 40, and they reunite.

He is alive. She is alive. The curse is gone. Their future together is clearly implied.

But his memories are not visibly restored before the drama ends.

So yes, I still classify this as a Happy Ending, because the main couple survives and reunites romantically.

But this is definitely not my preferred “married, babies, domestic fluff, everybody go home happy” ending.

Good fantasy story. Good leads. Capable FL. Genuine emotional relationship.

But:

40 episodes. One shadow kiss. Then amnesia.

Sir. 😭

Ending — SPOILERS

Happy Ending — with a major caveat.

Lu Qianqiao and Xin Mei both survive.

Lu Qianqiao sacrifices his memories in Episode 38 and leaves without remembering Xin Mei.

After approximately one year apart, Xin Mei finds him again in Episode 40.

They reunite romantically, the War Ghost curse is resolved, and the ending clearly implies that they will move forward together.

However, Lu Qianqiao does not visibly regain his memories before the drama ends.

Do not hide this caveat behind a simple “Happy Ending” label.

💗 Shen Zhiyi’s Drama Reality Check

Finished all 40 episodes. Full ending and relationship spoilers.

💕 Romance
Definitely present and important, but much more emotionally romantic than physically romantic.
🔥 Chemistry
Good. Their emotional bond and partnership carry the romance.
💋 Kissing
Extremely disappointing. One silhouette/shadow kiss. THAT'S IT. 😭
🤗 Skinship
Some hugs, touching, caretaking, protective moments, and physical closeness, but overall restrained.
🌶️ Spiciness / Adult Intimacy
Basically none.
🚩 ML Red Flag
Moderate early on. Deception and memory-related decisions are significant issues, although the relationship improves considerably.
👑 Female Lead Competence
Strong. Xin Mei fights, investigates, protects people, makes decisions, and actively participates in the plot.
⏱️ Romance Timing
Slow-to-moderate development. The romance is clearly established before the finale and becomes openly romantic around the early-to-mid 20s episodes.
❤️‍🔥 Relationship Payoff
Mixed. Good emotional development, weak physical payoff, followed by final-act amnesia.
💔 Breakup
No formal breakup verified.
⏳ Separation / Conflict
Major. Includes identity/deception issues, memory manipulation, and approximately a one-year separation after Lu Qianqiao sacrifices his memories.
💍 Final Relationship Status
Alive and romantically reunited. Their future together is clearly implied, but his memories are not visibly restored before the ending.
📖 Plot
Large-scale xianxia/fantasy story involving curses, cultivation, sect politics, betrayal, sacrifice, battles, and identity issues. Sometimes much more interested in the fantasy plot than feeding me romance.
🐾 Animal Harm
No significant dog/cat harm verified.
About these assessments

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

⭐ Final Rating: 3.5/5

3.5/5 EXACTLY

Forty episodes and all I got was a shadow kiss. 😭😂
