Zhan Zhao Adventures / 雨霖铃

The drama follows imperial guard Zhan Zhao, who gets pulled into an increasingly huge investigation involving corruption, conspiracies, martial-arts factions, old crimes, poisons, attempted rebellion and approximately seventeen thousand opportunities for somebody to stab somebody else. 😂

😂 My Reaction

its full of adventures all right!

Seriously, they did not falsely advertise this title. 😭

Adventure? Yes. Sword fights? Yes. Mysteries? Yes. People being poisoned? Constantly, apparently. Zhan Zhao risking his life again? Of course. Romantic payoff for me? HAHAHAHA NO.

This is much more of a traditional wuxia adventure than a romance wearing a wuxia costume. The strongest material is the fighting, investigation and the relationship between the central trio.

And that basically explains my 3/5.

The action and adventure side does its job, but my drama heart requires a little more than “we fought beside each other and now everybody goes home.” 😂

⚔️ The Adventure Part

Zhan Zhao starts investigating an old mystery and eventually uncovers a much larger conspiracy involving the Prince of Xiangyang. Huo Linglong and Bai Yutang become his companions as the story moves through interconnected cases rather than completely unrelated mysteries.

I actually appreciate that structure.

There is a real overarching objective, and the drama gives us:

• conspiracies
• betrayals
• hidden identities
• poisons
• murders
• corrupt officials
• martial-arts factions
• rescues
• traps
• political rebellion
• Zhan Zhao nearly dying approximately every five minutes 😭

So yes.

Adventures were had.

🗡️ Zhan Zhao, Bai Yutang & Huo Linglong

The trio is really the emotional center of the drama.

Yang Yang as Zhan Zhao gets plenty of opportunities to look heroic while injured, poisoned, exhausted, tortured or otherwise medically questionable. 😂

Bai Yutang brings more chaotic energy and is probably the most entertaining counterweight to Zhan Zhao's serious personality. Their friendship/rivalry becomes one of the drama's strongest relationships.

Huo Linglong has her own growth arc and eventually takes responsibility for Linglong Manor. She and Zhan Zhao definitely have companionship and some romantic-looking moments, but the drama never converts that into an actual relationship.

And THAT is where this loses me.

You cannot feed me thirty-seven episodes of attractive people standing dramatically in the rain and then expect me not to ask:

WHERE IS MY ROMANCE?! 👀

💕 But Is Zhan Zhao + Huo Linglong Actually a Couple?

No.

Despite some romantic subtext and Huo Linglong's admiration for him:

• ❌ No confirmed confession
• ❌ No kiss
• ❌ No official dating relationship
• ❌ No engagement
• ❌ No marriage
• ❌ No romantic endgame

The finale leaves Zhan Zhao and Huo Linglong on separate paths. Zhan Zhao returns to Kaifeng Court, while Huo Linglong assumes responsibility for Linglong Manor.

So technically I cannot complain about a breakup.

They would have needed to get together first. 😭

Ending — SPOILERS

✅ Happy Ending

The overall story gets a Happy Ending, although it is absolutely not a romantic happy ending.

Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang both survive despite the finale doing everything possible to convince us somebody is about to die. The rebellion is defeated, Zhan Zhao returns to his position with Kaifeng Court, and Huo Linglong takes charge of Linglong Manor.

So:

Zhan Zhao: Alive ✅ Bai Yutang: Alive ✅ Huo Linglong: Alive ✅ Conspiracy defeated: ✅ Main couple together: There is no main couple. 🤦‍♀️

Classification:

Happy Ending — No Main Romance

This is a story-wise happy ending, with no official romantic couple.
